The Year 1 reveal may disappoint players who expected a larger or more surprising lineup, but the available evidence does not show that MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls’ future is in danger. Sony has announced four additional characters and one stage for the pass, and Phoenix Cyclops is confirmed as its first character. The complete lineup, release cadence, and longer-term support plans remain unclear, so the reveal is a reason to watch the game’s support—not proof that it is failing.
What did the Year 1 reveal actually promise?
Sony’s February 12, 2026 announcement listed a Year 1 Characters & Stage Pass with four additional characters and one new stage. The official FAQ adds that the pass also includes battle-result poses for the 20-character base roster. Those are the confirmed contents; they are not a promise of a particular release schedule or of support beyond Year 1.
On July 23, 2026, Arc System Works producer Takeshi Yamanaka identified Phoenix Cyclops, voiced by Ray Chase, as the first additional character. He also said the team planned post-launch updates, including characters and stages. The primary announcements cited here do not confirm the full character lineup or when the remaining content will arrive.

The character picks matter as much as the count
Four characters can be a meaningful addition, but whether that feels satisfying depends on who they are and what players expected from the roster. An October 11 Reddit thread reports the group as Phoenix Cyclops, Thor (Jane Foster), Venom, and Jubilee. In that discussion, some commenters welcome particular picks while others would have preferred different characters. The complete lineup is community-reported here, not confirmed by a primary announcement, and the comments are not a representative poll.

One confirmed character is not a complete reveal
Phoenix Cyclops is the only Year 1 addition confirmed by the cited official announcement. Without a confirmed schedule for the other three characters and the stage, players cannot yet judge how evenly content will arrive or how long gaps between releases might be. A four-character total can look modest to someone expecting a larger season, but the count alone does not establish poor support; timing and quality matter too.
The pass price needs to be weighed against its contents
At announcement, Sony listed the US Digital Deluxe Edition at $84.99 and the Standard Edition at $59.99. The Deluxe edition includes the Year 1 pass, so the announcement prices imply a $25 difference between those editions at that time. This is a dated comparison, not a statement of current pricing, and it does not establish the pass’s standalone price. The pass’s value depends on whether its four characters, one stage, and battle-result poses are worth that difference to a buyer.

The official FAQ says a physical PS5 Standard Edition exists and that Standard buyers can upgrade to Digital Deluxe or Ultimate content through the PlayStation Store. Do not assume the Year 1 pass comes with the physical Standard Edition.
Does the reveal put the game’s future in danger?
Not on the evidence available. A reveal can disappoint some players without causing a game’s player base or support to collapse. The sampled Reddit discussions include concerns about PC launch problems, access restrictions, and competition, but also comments from players who say they are enjoying the game. Those threads show the kinds of reactions people express; they do not measure how common those views are.

Early sales estimates also need careful interpretation. GamesRadar reported a Famitsu estimate of 2,814 physical PS5 copies sold in Japan during the first week, alongside an Alinea Analytics estimate of 485,000 copies sold globally across Steam and PS5 in the first week. These figures cover different geographies and measurement scopes, so they should not be compared as though they were equivalent datasets. Neither estimate establishes retention, profitability, or the likelihood of long-term support.
The confirmed commitment is limited but concrete: four additional characters and one stage in the Year 1 pass, with Phoenix Cyclops named as the first addition. The available sources do not establish the schedule beyond that first character or what support will follow Year 1. A stronger judgment about the game’s prospects would require comparable sales data, player-retention trends, and clearer official support plans.

How to judge the next update
For players deciding whether the reveal is a warning sign or simply an incomplete announcement, these are the most useful things to watch:
- Official confirmation: whether the remaining characters and stage are announced by Sony or Arc System Works, rather than inferred from community posts.
- Release timing: how the additions are spaced across Year 1 and whether the schedule matches the pass’s promise.
- Roster and stage appeal: whether the choices add variety and address what players want from the game.
- Player activity and support: whether retention indicators and official updates point to continuing engagement, rather than relying on isolated reactions or a single sales estimate.
Until those details are clearer, “underwhelming” is a reasonable personal verdict about the reveal’s scope or picks—not a settled measure of community sentiment. The available evidence supports caution about what remains unannounced, not a claim that the game’s future is doomed.
