WAS Insurance Covid Essentials is a one-trip travel policy focused on emergency medical expenses and specified COVID-19 cancellation or interruption events. It does not include baggage cover, and its published cancellation limit is inconsistent: the linked Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) and other summaries say $4,000, while WAS’s dedicated product page says you can select up to $40,000. Confirm the applicable limit in writing and check your quote and Certificate of Insurance before relying on it.

What kind of policy is Covid Essentials?

Covid Essentials is a single-trip policy for eligible Australian residents. CHOICE identifies Pacific as the underwriter. The PDS, which says its information is current as at 15 November 2022, names Pacific International Insurance Pty Ltd as insurer and battleface Insurance Services Pty Ltd as underwriting agent; WAS/Wise and Silent acts as the authorised representative and distributor. The public material reviewed does not establish that the policy has been discontinued, but the date of the linked PDS matters when checking what terms apply to a new purchase.

CHOICE’s public review displays product specifications, but its expert rating and member-only scores are not visible. There is therefore no public rating or independent test verdict to report.

What benefits does the published policy describe?

The figures below are not all consistent across the public documents. Treat the PDS figures as the terms stated in the linked 2022 document, not as confirmation of the limit that will apply to a new quote.

Benefit Published amount or condition Where the figure appears
Emergency medical and additional expenses Unlimited, for up to 12 months of treatment, subject to policy terms and exclusions 15 November 2022 PDS; CHOICE also describes medical expenses as unlimited
COVID-19 cancellation or interruption Up to $4,000 15 November 2022 PDS, CHOICE review, and WAS’s broader plan overview
COVID-19 cancellation or interruption Selectable up to $40,000 WAS’s dedicated Covid Essentials page; this conflicts with the $4,000 figures above
Funeral expenses abroad Up to $10,000 15 November 2022 PDS
Hospital benefit $50 per day, up to $500 15 November 2022 PDS
Hospital benefit Up to $5,000 WAS’s dedicated Covid Essentials page; this conflicts with the PDS figure
Quarantine accommodation during a trip Up to $200 per insured person per day for up to 14 days, when a local public health authority directs mandatory quarantine 15 November 2022 PDS
Lost baggage Not covered CHOICE review and WAS plan overview

The conflict is not resolved by the public documents: the WAS page that gives the higher cancellation and hospital figures does not explain how they relate to the linked PDS, while WAS’s broader plan overview again lists $4,000 for cancellation. Ask WAS to identify the current PDS version and confirm the selected benefit in writing. Then verify that the same amount and excess appear on your quote and Certificate of Insurance. Do not assume the larger web-page figure applies to your policy.

Does it cover COVID-19 medical costs?

The PDS schedule lists emergency medical and additional expenses as unlimited for up to 12 months of treatment, excluding funeral expenses abroad. Its medical section describes necessary overseas treatment for an illness or injury that first shows after departure from Australia. Examples include hospital and outpatient or inpatient treatment, medical transport to a suitable hospital, and medically necessary repatriation. These benefits remain subject to eligibility, exclusions, limits, medical coordination requirements, and the policy terms.

That is not the same as cover for every cost caused by COVID-19. Medical cover should not be read as a promise to pay for isolation, border restrictions, or expenses arising because you were a close contact. CHOICE categorises Covid Essentials as covering pandemic medical costs in its comparison, but not pandemic-related additional expenses or cancellation under its general pandemic comparison. The PDS separately sets out specific COVID-19 cancellation and quarantine provisions, so those terms should be considered on their own rather than as blanket pandemic cover.

When can COVID-19 trigger cancellation or interruption cover?

The linked PDS limits this benefit to specified COVID-19 events. It describes eligible losses such as unused, non-refundable travel or accommodation and certain rescheduling costs, subject to the applicable limit and policy conditions.

Diagnosis before departure

The PDS lists a diagnosis of the insured person or a travelling companion in Australia by a registered medical provider within 14 days before departure. For a COVID-19 cancellation claim, it requires evidence of a positive diagnosis from a medical practitioner or recognised laboratory.

Diagnosis during the trip

A COVID-19 diagnosis during the trip is among the listed triggers. The claim still has to meet the policy’s definition and documentation requirements, and the benefit limit shown on the applicable policy documents applies.

Individual quarantine direction

The PDS also lists being individually contacted by a local public health authority and directed to quarantine during the insurance period. For mandatory quarantine directed during the trip, the document describes accommodation expenses up to $200 per insured person per day for no more than 14 days. This is a defined benefit, not a general allowance for any period of isolation.

Essential health care worker leave cancelled

A further listed circumstance is an essential health care worker whose employer cancels their leave for COVID-related reasons. Check the PDS wording and your Certificate of Insurance to confirm that your role and circumstances meet the policy conditions.

Important limits on these triggers

The PDS excludes events that were reasonably expected when the policy was bought. It also excludes a diagnosis in a destination under relevant Smartraveller “do not travel” advice where COVID-19 was part of the reason for that advice. CHOICE’s public summary contains inconsistent wording about cancellation after a close relative’s diagnosis; the PDS’s listed triggers name the insured person or a travelling companion. Do not assume a non-travelling relative’s diagnosis is covered without written confirmation against the current policy wording.

What does Covid Essentials leave out?

Baggage and other common travel benefits

Covid Essentials does not cover lost baggage. CHOICE’s summary also lists $0 for baggage, travel delay, rental-car excess, and a number of other benefits. WAS’s plan overview says the policy does not include luggage or personal effects, travel delay, liability, or rental vehicle excess. Check the actual benefit schedule for any other loss you need insured rather than assuming a standard travel policy benefit is included.

Activities and trips needing specialist cover

The PDS lists exclusions for multi-night cruises, snow sports, motorcycle or moped riding, and several adventure or specialist activities; CHOICE also flags snow sports and mopeds or motorcycles. If your itinerary includes one of these, check whether the activity or trip is excluded before buying. WAS says its Discovery plan can be configured with baggage and optional cruise, snow, or motorcycle cover, but compare the specific terms and benefit schedule rather than relying on the plan name.

How does it differ from broader travel cover?

WAS positions Covid Essentials as its budget option and Discovery as the more configurable plan. That is the provider’s description, not independent evidence that one is better value. The practical difference is whether the benefits match your trip and the losses you want to insure.

Check What to verify for Covid Essentials What to compare in a broader option
Cancellation and interruption Which COVID-19 triggers apply and what limit is recorded on your documents Whether the benefit covers the events and costs relevant to your trip, and its limit
Medical treatment and repatriation The treatment period, exclusions, coordination rules, and repatriation terms Whether those terms and limits suit your destination and circumstances
Quarantine and accommodation The public-health direction required and the stated daily and maximum periods Whether quarantine or other additional expenses are included and under what conditions
Other travel losses Baggage, delay, liability, and rental-car excess are not listed as covered benefits in the cited summaries Whether the particular benefits you need are included, optional, or excluded
Activities and eligibility Check age, residency, trip type, excess, and activity exclusions Compare the same trip details and exclusions, not just headline benefits

CHOICE’s comparison, updated 11 August 2026, reports that almost 60% of single-trip policies in its comparison exclude pandemic cover; 17 policies cover additional pandemic expenses, and five cover pandemic-related cancellation claims. CHOICE qualifies these protections as conditional. These figures describe the policies in that comparison, not the entire Australian market, and they do not establish that a given claim under Covid Essentials will be accepted.

Who can buy it, and what should you check first?

The linked PDS says buyers must be Australian residents aged 18 or older, with an upper age limit of 99. It describes cover for one-way and return journeys and says the policy cannot be bought once the trip has commenced. The Certificate of Insurance records the insured travel dates, destinations, and excess.

  1. Get the applicable documents. Ask for the PDS version that applies to your purchase and read its conditions, exclusions, and limits. The policy documents page says a Certificate of Insurance accompanies the policy.
  2. Resolve the benefit-limit mismatch. Have WAS confirm in writing which cancellation/interruption and hospital-benefit limits apply to your quote. Check the selected amounts and excess on the quote and Certificate of Insurance.
  3. Match your scenario to an insured trigger. For cancellation or quarantine, check the exact diagnosis, timing, public-health direction, and documentation conditions against the current PDS. Do not treat a positive test, close contact, or general travel disruption as automatically covered.
  4. Check your itinerary and uncovered losses. Decide whether you need baggage, delay, liability, rental-car excess, or cover for a cruise or activity that the policy excludes.
  5. Review travel advice and keep evidence. Check relevant Smartraveller advice for your destination. The provider’s FAQ says claims may require supporting documents such as receipts, medical certificates, or airline correspondence, so retain records relevant to any loss.

Verdict

Covid Essentials may suit an eligible traveller seeking a one-trip policy with medical cover and narrowly defined COVID-19 cancellation and quarantine benefits, provided the confirmed terms match the trip. It is a poor fit if you need baggage protection or cover for an excluded activity, and the public cancellation-limit mismatch is significant enough that a buyer should obtain written confirmation before purchase. The linked PDS is dated 15 November 2022; rely on the current PDS and the benefits stated in your own Certificate of Insurance, not an unconfirmed headline figure.
