WARDOGS is not a conventional extraction shooter. Its September 10, 2026 Early Access build is a 100-player, three-team objective-war FPS: squads capture zones, earn cash for useful combat and support actions, deploy vehicles and logistics, and fight across destructible maps. Choose it for large-scale, communication-heavy PvP that feels closer to an accessible blend of Arma and Battlefield than to a raid-and-exfil game.

Choose R.E.P.O. for up to six friends carrying fragile valuables through randomized horror levels and escaping with enough value to meet a quota. Choose ARC Raiders for one to three players who want a traditional third-person PvPvE extraction loop involving scavenging, robot enemies, human raiders and an exfiltration run. The right game depends less on the shared “Early Access” label than on whether you want zone control, cooperative horror or high-risk scavenging.

What WARDOGS actually is

WARDOGS is an online tactical all-out-warfare FPS from BULKHEAD, published by Team17. The current Steam listing describes matches with 100 players divided among three teams. Battles take place on large, destructible maps where dynamic capture zones determine the immediate objective. The Early Access build is described as fully playable and built around the game’s core vision.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The important distinction is the win condition. A WARDOGS match is about controlling objectives and helping your team win the battle, not filling a backpack with raid loot and reaching a separate extraction point. You can lose a life and return to the fight; the match continues as a large team operation rather than ending when a small squad successfully exfils.

Is WARDOGS an extraction shooter?

No—not in the genre’s usual mechanical sense. Steam’s own positioning says, “This is not another ‘Battle Royale’. This is not another ‘Extraction Shooter’.” There are no documented raid-style extraction objectives in the current mode. You are not asked to search a map for valuables, carry them to an exit and bank them only if you survive.

WARDOGS can still feel extraction-adjacent because cash creates persistent pressure around each life. You spend money on a loadout, then try to earn more through effective play. Dying with an expensive kit can make the next life harder, while a successful run of useful actions gives you more freedom to buy weapons, protection and support equipment. That is an economic risk loop, not an extraction loop.

How a WARDOGS match works

  1. Enter a three-team battle. The advertised server scale is 100 players, creating a much larger frontline than the one-to-six-player sessions in the comparison games.
  2. Move toward the active objective. Capture zones are dynamic, so the valuable location can shift during the battle. Your squad has to read the map and decide whether to attack, defend, flank or support another push.
  3. Spend and protect your cash. Cash pays for guns, helmets, vests, magazines, gadgets and bandages. The exact balance can change during Early Access, so treat the economy as a live system rather than a fixed end-state.
  4. Generate rewards by contributing. The documented reward examples include kills, time in a capture zone, healing teammates and driving. A player who anchors an objective or keeps a vehicle moving can progress without topping the killboard.
  5. Use team infrastructure. Vehicles, logistics and support play are part of the advertised design. Winning fights may depend on transportation, resupply and coordinated movement as much as on individual aim.

Why communication matters

Proximity voice chat is listed as a current feature. It can make a contested zone feel like a shared battlefield: nearby allies can coordinate a push, call for medical help or warn about a vehicle. Communication is not merely a social extra when objectives move and three teams collide; it is how a squad turns information into a timely decision.

The design also rewards roles that extraction players may not normally associate with progression. Driving, healing and holding a zone are explicitly cited as reward-generating activities. If you prefer logistics, support or defensive play, WARDOGS gives those jobs a direct economic purpose.

WARDOGS, R.E.P.O. and ARC Raiders at a glance

Game Players Core mode What counts as success Main risk Best fit
WARDOGS 100 players across three teams Large-scale objective-control PvP FPS Capture and hold dynamic zones while supporting your team Cash invested in lives and loadouts Groups that want vehicles, logistics, proximity voice and a large battlefield
R.E.P.O. Up to six players Cooperative survival-horror extraction Find valuable objects, preserve their value, meet the quota and escape in the truck Valuables and the run are lost when the team fails Small groups that enjoy physical-object handling, monsters and verbal coordination
ARC Raiders One to three players Third-person PvPvE extraction shooter Scavenge parts and weapons, complete objectives and return to Speranza Loot and the chance of failing to exfiltrate after PvE or PvP encounters Small squads seeking modern scavenging, robot threats and human opposition

The player counts describe the advertised multiplayer scale, not a promise about matchmaking times or current population. Public descriptions do not establish authoritative current-concurrent-player figures, regional prices, refund rates or queue lengths for these games.

WARDOGS vs. R.E.P.O.: battlefield PvP or cooperative horror?

The fundamental loop

R.E.P.O. is explicit about the extraction formula. A team enters a randomized level, finds valuable objects, handles them carefully so they do not lose value, and carries them to an extraction point. The group then uses the truck to escape and earns SURPLUS. Between levels, players spend that progress on permanent upgrades, weapons, explosives, tools, health and energy.

WARDOGS has no equivalent retrieve-then-escape sequence in its advertised mode. Its loop is continuous combat around objectives. The thing you protect is your cash-funded life and loadout, not a physical collection of loot that must reach a truck. A player who wants the suspense of hearing monsters while a teammate carries a fragile object will find that tension in R.E.P.O., not in WARDOGS.

Group size and social pressure

R.E.P.O. supports groups of up to six, making it the natural choice for a larger private friend group that wants to stay together in a cooperative session. Its obstacles are deliberately social: players must communicate while moving awkward objects, divide attention between threats and valuables, and decide when the quota is good enough to leave.

WARDOGS supports a much larger public battle. You may coordinate with a squad, but the surrounding match includes dozens of other players on your team and two opposing teams. That scale creates a different social rhythm: quick callouts, vehicle coordination and support actions matter, while not every teammate will be in your voice channel or follow your plan.

Failure and progression

In R.E.P.O., a failed escape threatens the value gathered during that level and can leave the team short of its quota. The emotional peak arrives when the group decides whether to risk one more valuable object or retreat. Permanent upgrades then shape later attempts.

In WARDOGS, cash is the pressure point. PC Gamer’s hands-on report describes rewards for kills, capture-zone presence, healing and driving, with cash spent on equipment such as guns, helmets, vests, magazines, gadgets and bandages. The same report says its reviewer made a profit in nine of ten lives during a closed playtest by standing on the objective, healing and securing occasional kills. That is one reported playtest experience, not a guaranteed income rate or final balance. The report also warns that more expensive progression could encourage safer play.

Choose R.E.P.O. if…

  • Your ideal session has two to six friends, a clear quota and a shared escape plan.
  • You enjoy comedy or horror emerging from physics, fragile objects and mistakes.
  • You want every run to ask, “Do we cash out now or risk one more room?”
  • You prefer cooperative PvE pressure to fighting two other player teams.

WARDOGS vs. ARC Raiders: two very different kinds of extraction tension

ARC Raiders’ extraction structure

ARC Raiders is described as a third-person extraction shooter for one to three players on Windows PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Its PvPvE encounters combine robot threats with human raiders. Players scavenge parts and weapons, complete objectives and try to return to the underground base Speranza.

That creates the classic extraction decision: valuable loot is useful only if you survive the route home. A robot fight can expose your position to another squad, and a successful objective does not matter if a human opponent stops your exfiltration. A review characterized ARC Raiders as faster and more approachable than Escape from Tarkov while retaining the emotional risk of making it to extraction.

How WARDOGS changes the scale

WARDOGS moves the pressure from a small squad’s bag to a 100-player frontline. You are not primarily hunting parts before a timed departure. You are deciding which capture zone matters, whether your team can hold it, and how much cash to risk on the next life. Vehicles and logistics make movement and support central, while the three-team structure means a fight can change when the third faction attacks.

ARC Raiders is the better fit if you want a compact squad where every hostile contact could end the run. WARDOGS is the better fit if you want a battle that keeps producing new objectives and reinforcements, with room for drivers, medics, defenders and assault players to contribute.

Perspective and accessibility

ARC Raiders uses a third-person perspective and limits a squad to one, two or three players. That makes it easier to organize a session with one or two friends and keeps the tactical picture focused on your immediate team. WARDOGS is a first-person shooter whose advertised match scale is intentionally far larger. It asks you to learn frontline movement, objective timing and team support rather than only route planning for an exfil.

Choose ARC Raiders if…

  • You want an actual extraction shooter with a return-to-base objective.
  • Your regular group is one to three players.
  • You like fighting AI robots and other human squads in the same raid.
  • You want scavenging and exfiltration without the scale and logistics of a 100-player war.

Which game fits your preferred kind of teamwork?

If your priority is… Pick Why
Large battles with vehicles and shifting objectives WARDOGS Its advertised format is 100 players, three teams, dynamic zones, vehicles and logistics.
Six-person cooperative sessions R.E.P.O. It supports up to six and makes coordination around valuables and quotas the central challenge.
One-to-three-player scavenging raids ARC Raiders Its PvPvE loop combines robots, human raiders, objectives and a return to Speranza.
Support roles that earn progress WARDOGS Healing, driving, objective presence and kills are all documented reward paths.
Physical handling of loot R.E.P.O. Objects can lose value if mishandled, so carrying is a mechanical skill rather than inventory management alone.
High-stakes extraction after every raid ARC Raiders Survival and exfiltration determine whether scavenged parts and weapons make it home.

What the WARDOGS economy means for your playstyle

Cash is a risk budget, not extraction loot

PC Gamer described the game’s economic design with the line, “Cash is how Wardogs (like Arma mod before it) harnesses a bit of extraction shooter juice.” The comparison is useful only if you keep the distinction clear. Cash creates a reason to value your life and make deliberate purchases, but it does not represent a bag of items that must be carried to an exit.

Before spending heavily, consider what the next objective requires. A vest and magazines may be more valuable for holding a zone than a gadget you will not use. A vehicle-focused player may earn through driving and logistics rather than buying the same assault kit as an entry fragger. Because prices and progression can change during Early Access, learn the current economy in low-cost lives before committing your entire balance.

Why safer play could become a balance issue

The closed-playtest account that reported profit in nine of ten lives also raised a design concern: if later progression makes equipment substantially more expensive, players may be rewarded for avoiding decisive fights. That tension is worth watching because WARDOGS needs players to contest zones, not merely preserve cash. The eventual balance may change as the developer adjusts costs, rewards and progression.

How this differs from R.E.P.O. and ARC Raiders

R.E.P.O. measures success through the value that reaches extraction and the SURPLUS available for upgrades. ARC Raiders makes the loot itself vulnerable until you return to Speranza. WARDOGS measures your economic health through the cash you earn and spend across lives in an ongoing objective battle. The three systems all create risk, but they ask you to protect different things.

Early Access expectations for WARDOGS

BULKHEAD has indicated an estimated Early Access period of roughly one to two years, while noting that the exact duration can change. Planned additions include more maps, weapons, vehicles, progression, seasonal systems, objectives and polish. Those plans describe direction, not a guaranteed schedule or feature-complete roadmap.

The current listing presents the Early Access version as fully playable and representative of the core vision. That makes it reasonable to evaluate the present 100-player, three-team objective mode on its own terms, while accepting that balance, content volume and progression may evolve. Do not treat a future seasonal system or additional map as available today.

The same caution applies to the comparison games. Early Access status means mechanics, performance and progression can change. The available descriptions establish their modes and advertised player counts, but do not establish identical content volume, update cadence or long-term population health.

A practical first-session plan

Starting WARDOGS with friends

  1. Agree on a role before deploying. Decide who will drive, who will focus on the capture zone, who will carry medical support and who will call movement.
  2. Use a conservative first loadout. Learn how cash income and equipment costs feel before buying the most expensive combination.
  3. Follow the active zone. Do not remain on a safe position after the objective moves; the mode rewards useful presence where the battle is happening.
  4. Call support actions. Healing, driving and logistics are not filler tasks. The documented reward structure gives them economic value.
  5. Review the life, not just the kill count. Note whether your cash improved, whether the team held objectives and which purchases actually helped.

Starting R.E.P.O. with friends

  1. Assign a carrier and a lookout. Valuable objects need careful handling while another player watches for monsters and hazards.
  2. Set a quota target. Decide how much value is enough before the level becomes too dangerous.
  3. Protect object value. Do not treat every item like weightless inventory; careless handling can reduce what the team earns.
  4. Plan the truck escape. Reaching the extraction point is only useful if the group can board and leave.
  5. Spend SURPLUS deliberately. Permanent upgrades, tools, weapons, health and energy should address the team’s recurring failure rather than randomize purchases.

Starting ARC Raiders with one or two friends

  1. Choose a simple objective. Scavenging parts and weapons is valuable only when it supports a survivable route back to Speranza.
  2. Track both threat types. Robot activity can attract human raiders, so a quiet PvE fight can become a PvP encounter.
  3. Keep an exfiltration route in mind. Do not wait until the inventory is full to decide how you will return.
  4. Decide when to leave. The emotional risk comes from carrying useful loot while knowing another encounter could erase the run.

Common buying and matchmaking mistakes

Calling WARDOGS “co-op” without explaining the context

WARDOGS is team-based online PvP, not a cooperative PvE campaign. You cooperate with teammates inside a three-team battle. If your group wants to fight monsters together without opposing players, R.E.P.O. is the closer match. If you want both AI threats and hostile human squads, ARC Raiders is the relevant choice.

Assuming cash equals loot extraction

Cash funds equipment and progression in WARDOGS. It is not evidence of a backpack-and-exit system. Expect objective decisions, respawns and team warfare rather than a truck or base exfiltration.

Choosing by player count alone

A six-player maximum does not make R.E.P.O. a smaller version of WARDOGS; its physical-object physics and horror pressure define the experience. Likewise, ARC Raiders’ three-player limit is not simply a reduced WARDOGS squad. The games use different cameras, objectives, threats and failure states.

Spending as if Early Access balance were final

WARDOGS’ estimated one-to-two-year Early Access window leaves room for economic and progression changes. Treat current prices and reward rates as provisional, and avoid assuming a reported closed-playtest result will apply to every update or player.

Verdict: which Early Access game should you choose?

Pick WARDOGS when your group wants a first-person, 100-player war built around dynamic capture zones, vehicles, logistics, proximity voice and a cash-backed loadout economy. It borrows some of the risk psychology associated with extraction games without asking you to loot and exfiltrate.

Pick R.E.P.O. when the priority is a small cooperative horror night for up to six people. Its identity comes from carrying fragile valuables, meeting quotas and escaping together, so it is the clearest choice for a genuine co-op extraction loop.

Pick ARC Raiders when one to three players want the traditional extraction-shooter tension of scavenging, robot combat, human raiders and a dangerous return to Speranza. It offers the most direct answer to “I want extraction,” while WARDOGS answers a different question: “What if the economic pressure of extraction games were placed inside a huge objective battlefield?”
