Short answer: WARDOGS is not a conventional two-team Blue-versus-Red shooter. The developer identifies three factions—Valkyra, Lonestar and Manticore—fighting over one randomized Control Zone. Lonestar is the faction commonly described as blue; player conversations and update language also use green and red labels, but the official rules do not assign separate objectives or locked classes to those colors.
Your meaningful choice is therefore less about a faction-exclusive loadout and more about how you want to help: contest the zone, revive and transport teammates, build a forward position, scout from range, or operate vehicles. Pick the faction where your friends or preferred group are playing, then buy equipment that supports the contribution you enjoy.
What “Blue versus Red” means in WARDOGS
The Blue-versus-Red wording is useful shorthand for a community question, but it can create the wrong expectation. WARDOGS describes matches with up to 100 players divided among three factions: Valkyra, Lonestar and Manticore. Lonestar is the blue faction in the developer’s terminology. The official material does not establish a separate “red-team mission” or a Blue-only class tree, and it does not document a permanent green-versus-red ruleset.

All factions contest the same objective. The official website presents the game as WARDOGS | All Out Warfare, while the developer FAQ identifies the three-faction structure and explains how players create roles through equipment. Color labels are useful for identifying people on the battlefield, not for predicting a unique class kit or win condition.

| Official faction | What is established | What is not established |
|---|---|---|
| Lonestar | The developer identifies Lonestar as the blue team. | A permanent Blue-only objective, class or equipment set. |
| Valkyra | One of the three factions contesting the Control Zone. | A documented color-exclusive role or mission. |
| Manticore | One of the three factions contesting the Control Zone. | A documented color-exclusive role or mission. |
That distinction matters when choosing a side. You should select a faction for access to friends, a group you want to join, or the way you prefer to contribute—not because a guide promises that one color owns a special sniper, medic or assault class.
The shared objective: control the zone, not a faction-specific target
Each match revolves around a randomized Control Zone measuring 2×2 km. The team with the most players inside earns points, and the first team to reach 100 points wins. Those figures come from the current official game site and describe the central loop rather than an optional side activity.
The developer FAQ gives the scoring cadence: when a team has the largest player presence in the zone, it receives one point every 30 seconds. Because the game is in Early Access, treat that cadence as the developer-published rule for the reviewed version, not a promise that it can never change.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

|---|---|
| Maximum player count | Up to 100 players across three teams. |
| Objective area | A randomized 2×2 km Control Zone. |
| How points are earned | The team with the most players inside the zone earns one point every 30 seconds. |
| Win condition | The first team to reach 100 points wins. |
This scoring model changes the value of every role. A long-range player who spots an approach, a driver who moves reinforcements, and a builder who makes a forward position safer can all increase the team’s ability to keep a player-count advantage. A kill outside the objective may be useful, but it does not replace having enough teammates inside the zone to score.
How WARDOGS creates roles
WARDOGS does not present fixed faction classes in the material reviewed. The developer says players create roles by purchasing equipment and vehicles. Its examples include buying building items or buying bandages and medkits to act as a medic. The FAQ describes every role as viable and says teamplay roles are more profitable, so your loadout is a practical decision about contribution rather than a permanent character selection.
The official website summarizes that philosophy with the line, We don’t just encourage teamplay; we reward it.
That reward language is important: reviving or transporting teammates is not merely cosmetic support, but part of the game’s stated economy.
- Equipment defines your job: medical supplies support reviving and treatment, while building items support defensive or logistical work.
- Vehicles expand your options: the FAQ confirms drivable vehicles and flyable aircraft, allowing movement and transport roles.
- Roles can be adapted: because the role comes from purchases rather than a locked faction class, you can change your emphasis as the match develops.
- Teamplay has economic value: the developer specifically says cooperative roles are more profitable, although the reviewed material does not give a universal cash amount for each action.
Choose a contribution that matches your playstyle
Objective-focused players: push or hold the zone
If you enjoy clear win conditions and direct pressure, make the Control Zone your default destination. Pushing means helping your team establish a player-count advantage when another faction controls the area. Holding means staying in or near the zone long enough to preserve that advantage while watching likely approaches.

These eye-catching lights give your setup a gamer-ready look while maintaining focus on performance. (*Note: The USB connector is for LED lighting only)
This is the most direct expression of the shared objective. It also requires accepting that an apparently safe position outside the zone may be less valuable than a risky move that keeps your team numerically ahead inside it. The official rules reward presence, so coordinate your movement with teammates instead of treating the match as a series of unrelated fights.
Supportive players: revive and transport
Players who prefer enabling others can focus on reviving squadmates and transporting friendlies. Both examples appear in the developer’s descriptions of useful team contributions. A support player helps the team return to the fight and arrive where numbers matter, rather than measuring success only by personal eliminations.
Buy medical equipment if you want a medic-style role, and communicate before moving people or supplies. Since teamplay actions are explicitly associated with cash rewards, this approach can also support your purchasing power during a match.
Builders and logistics-minded players: create a forward position
Building items let you establish a forward operating base or fortify a strategic position. This suits players who enjoy preparation, map reading and making a location easier for teammates to use. A useful structure should support the shared objective: a route into the zone, a defensible staging point, or a position that helps your team sustain its presence.

Any faction can use the equipment-based role system, so choose it because you like logistics, not because a color is supposed to own the builder identity.
Patient reconnaissance players: scout and snipe
The official site uses a ghillie suit and ranged sniping as examples of possible approaches. That makes reconnaissance a legitimate playstyle, but not a faction identity. A patient player can observe routes, identify threats and provide information before committing to a fight.
Keep the objective in view even when you are playing at distance. A scout who helps teammates enter or hold the zone contributes more directly than one who remains hidden with no connection to the team’s movement.

Vehicle-focused players: move people and supplies
If you enjoy driving or flying, WARDOGS supports that contribution through drivable vehicles and flyable aircraft. Transport can move teammates toward the Control Zone, help a group reposition after a failed push, or carry supplies for a forward base. Vehicle play is therefore a form of logistics as well as combat.

Flexible players: change emphasis as the match develops
The equipment-based system also suits players who do not want one permanent job. You can begin by helping a push, switch to transport when the line stalls, or purchase construction items when your team needs a stronger position. The official material supports this flexibility; it does not promise that every item is available at every moment or that a role change is free, so manage your purchases deliberately.
Lonestar balance: what the Season 2 update actually says
Lonestar’s balance history is a legitimate reason to ask about the blue team, but the evidence is time-sensitive. In a developer-published Season 2 update, BULKHEAD acknowledged a lower Lonestar win rate, player reluctance connected substantially to sentiment about blue, and concerns about uniform visibility and spawn positions.
The same update lists several responses:
- Faction spawn locations were moved.
- Lonestar uniforms were made more desaturated to address visibility concerns.
- Season 2 included cash and XP win bonuses for Lonestar.
The reviewed update does not state the bonus amounts or an exact end date. It says the incentives are Season 2-only, so do not assume that a bonus is active, permanent or identical in a later season. Nor does the update establish a permanent faction handicap. Check the latest official update notes before making a current decision based on Lonestar rewards or win rate.

A practical framework for choosing a faction
Because the official sources do not document locked objectives or role kits, compare factions using the factors that actually affect your match:
| Question | Choose this approach when… | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Do you want the clearest link to victory? | You are willing to push into or hold the Control Zone. | Presence in the zone determines which team scores. |
| How much coordination do you enjoy? | You like reviving, transporting or moving as a group. | The developer explicitly rewards teamplay actions. |
| What combat distance suits you? | You prefer close objective pressure, or patience and ranged scouting. | Equipment and positioning let you shape the role without a faction-locked class. |
| Do you enjoy support and logistics? | You want to build, carry supplies or operate transport. | Forward bases, vehicles and medical equipment are official examples of useful contributions. |
| Who are you playing with? | Your friends or preferred group are already organized in one faction. | Shared communication and coordinated movement usually matter more than an assumed color specialty. |
The strongest default recommendation is to join the faction where your friends are available, or the group whose pace and communication style you prefer. After that choice, buy equipment that matches your contribution. This follows from the game’s common objective and flexible role system; it is not a claim that one faction is universally superior.

A first-match plan that works with any faction
- Identify the objective before the first engagement. Locate the current Control Zone and understand which route will put your team in position to contest it.
- Agree on a contribution. Tell nearby teammates whether you are pushing, reviving, transporting, building, scouting or operating a vehicle. A short declaration prevents several players from preparing for the same task while leaving another uncovered.
- Buy only the equipment that supports that plan. Medical supplies suit a medic-style contribution; building items suit a forward base; vehicles suit transport or mobility. The developer’s examples are role options, not mandatory classes.
- Move with the team’s numbers in mind. Since the leading player count inside the zone earns points, coordinate entries and reinforcements rather than drifting into isolated fights.
- Convert support into objective time. Revive teammates, bring them back by vehicle, or improve the position from which they can remain in the zone. These actions connect your personal role to the scoring system.
- Reassess after a failed push. If direct pressure stalls, a transport run, reconnaissance pass or fortified staging position may solve the problem better than repeating the same attack.
Platform, voice chat and practical requirements
The developer FAQ describes current development as PC-focused and says controller support is limited in the current version. The Steam listing describes online multiplayer with proximity voice chat.
A microphone headset is therefore an optional convenience for coordinating with nearby players, not a stated requirement. You can choose any compatible PC audio setup that lets you hear positional cues and communicate clearly; no particular headset model is required or evaluated by the official material.
Voice proximity also changes how you should approach role selection. Transport, reviving and building are easier when players can quickly explain what they need, while a solo scout should still pass useful information back to the group rather than treating voice chat as background noise.
What the game’s own description says about realism
When asked whether WARDOGS is arcade-style or realistic, the developer FAQ uses the motto: A Tactical All Out Warfare Shooter that hasn’t forgotten it’s a game
. That wording signals a deliberate middle ground. The game expects tactical decisions, coordinated movement and objective discipline, but it is still designed around accessible game systems such as equipment-created roles and a clear points race.
In practical terms, do not read “tactical” as evidence that each faction has a real-world military doctrine or fixed class roster. The documented systems emphasize a shared zone, player-count scoring and player-built roles.
How to interpret future balance changes
WARDOGS is in Early Access, so faction balance, spawn locations, uniform visibility, controller support and seasonal incentives can change. The current official pages are the right places to verify a claim before acting on it:
Recommended Free Tools
- Use the official WARDOGS website for the headline match structure and objective dimensions.
- Use the BULKHEAD developer FAQ for the role system, scoring cadence, vehicle types, platform notes and developer explanations.
- Use the developer’s Steam Community updates for seasonal balance notes such as Lonestar’s Season 2 changes.
- Use the Steam store listing for the current PC multiplayer and proximity-voice description.
If a future update introduces faction-specific equipment, changes the 30-second cadence or removes a seasonal incentive, that new notice should supersede older assumptions. Until then, the reliable distinction is simple: three factions share one objective, and your equipment determines how you help pursue it.
