WARDOGS is a three-team tactical FPS built around one central fight: control the active zone long enough to outscore Valkyra, Lonestar, and Manticore. The team with the most players inside the Control Zone receives one point at each 30-second scoring check, and the first team to reach 100 points wins. You buy your role through weapons, equipment, vehicles, and supplies rather than selecting a permanent class. Each life costs money, while your cash carries between matches, so every purchase is also an economic decision.
What a WARDOGS round is trying to make you do
The main WARDOGS mode is inspired by King of the Hill. Instead of treating kills as the complete win condition, your team must establish the strongest presence in a named area, the Control Zone, and keep returning to it after attacks, deaths, and relocations. The match rewards the team that can combine combat with movement, revives, fortification, transport, and sensible spending.
The official developer FAQ describes matches of up to 100 players divided among three teams. Those teams are Valkyra, Lonestar, and Manticore. The available material does not establish different faction bonuses, weapons, or passive abilities, so choose a team for the match rather than assuming one has a built-in mechanical advantage.

How scoring and victory work
| Rule | What it means in play |
|---|---|
| Control Zone | The contested area that determines the round’s score. |
| Scoring interval | Every 30 seconds, the team with the most players inside receives one point. |
| Win condition | The first team to reach 100 points wins. |
| Team count | Three teams: Valkyra, Lonestar, and Manticore. |
| Player capacity | Up to 100 players in a match, according to the developer FAQ. |
Because points are awarded on a timer, entering the zone just before a check can matter more than winning a fight far away from it. Conversely, a team can lose a short firefight and still recover if it gets enough players back into the zone for the next check. Watch the score and the timing, not only your personal kill count.
#1 Best Overall
The FAQ also describes a drop-in/drop-out structure. It is intended to accommodate players who have only a short session and players who stay longer. On joining, you must select a team for your player to count as active and for the match to begin. Player totals can therefore change during a round; an uneven headcount is not automatically an unfair advantage because skill, tactics, and playstyles also vary.
What to do in your first match
- Join a team and identify the zone. Confirm which side you are on and locate the current Control Zone before spending money or chasing a distant fight.
- Choose one practical job. Decide whether this life is primarily for frontline combat, medical support, construction, transport, or another team task your purchases can support.
- Buy a loadout you can afford to lose. Your first life is for learning routes, distances, cover, and the scoring rhythm. Do not commit your entire cash reserve to equipment you have not yet learned to use.
- Move with a reason. Travel toward the zone, a friendly position, a revive, or a useful flank. A long detour that produces no zone pressure usually costs your team more than it earns.
- Play the next scoring check. Ask how many seconds remain and whether your team needs bodies in the zone, a safe approach route, a revive, or a defensive position.
- After dying, reassess the next life. Persistent cash means replacing an expensive loadout repeatedly can leave you unable to make useful purchases later.
A practical beginner goal is not “top the kill feed.” It is to understand one complete cycle: buy, travel, contest, survive or die, and decide what the next life should cost.
Teams: Valkyra, Lonestar, and Manticore
Every round is a three-way contest between Valkyra, Lonestar, and Manticore. With three teams attacking the same zone, the leading team must watch two directions rather than one. A fight that appears favorable can still open the zone to the third faction.
The developer has not established faction-specific gameplay bonuses in the sources available for this guide. Treat the names as team identities, not as evidence that one side has superior equipment or scoring rules. Your useful decisions are where to stand, what to buy, and how to support the side you selected.
How to choose a team as a new player
- Join the team that lets you understand the objective quickly; the important choice is becoming active and entering the match.
- Look for nearby teammates before making an isolated push. A flexible sandbox rewards coordinated presence more reliably than a lone duel.
- Do not abandon the team objective because another faction has a tempting fight outside the zone. Ask whether the engagement changes the next scoring check.
Roles are created by purchases, not a class menu
WARDOGS does not lock you into a fixed class selection. The developer FAQ says players create roles through equipment and vehicle purchases. You can build a medic-style life with bandages and medkits, select building items to establish or repair positions, or buy weapons and utility for direct combat. The store description also lists vehicles as part of a custom per-life loadout.
This system makes role selection an economic choice. Your kit says what you can contribute now, while your remaining cash determines which choices are available after the next death. Team-oriented roles are described by the developer as potentially profitable, but the sources do not provide a universal payout table or guarantee that one role always earns more than another.
| Approach | Typical contribution | Main decision |
|---|---|---|
| Combat | Contest entrances, remove threats, and hold ground. | Spend enough on weapons and utility to survive the fights you expect. |
| Medic support | Keep teammates in the fight with bandages, medkits, and safe revives. | Carry supplies and position close enough to help without becoming an easy target. |
| Builder or fortifier | Create useful cover, defensive positions, or protected approaches. | Build where it affects access to the zone, not merely where construction is convenient. |
| Vehicle or logistics support | Move players and equipment toward the objective. | Balance transport value against the cost and risk of losing the vehicle. |
These are examples of roles, not a complete class list or a promise that every item is available in every current build. Buy around the job you intend to perform and change jobs when the battle requires it.
Loadouts, lives, and the cash economy
Steam’s WARDOGS listing says each life begins with a purchased custom loadout drawn from weapons, gear, utility, and vehicles. Cash persists from match to match. That creates two linked economies:
Rank #3
- Per-life spending: the immediate price of entering the next engagement.
- Persistent cash: the reserve that shapes future lives and future matches.
A costly loadout can be justified when it changes an important fight, enables a crucial transport run, or gives your team a capability nobody else has brought. It is a poor purchase when you are experimenting without a plan, traveling alone, or repeatedly losing the kit before reaching the objective.
A simple spending check
- What is the next life supposed to accomplish?
- Which item directly enables that job?
- Can you complete the job with a cheaper weapon, utility item, or shared vehicle?
- What cash will remain if this life ends immediately?
Do not assume that the most expensive equipment is the strongest choice in every situation. WARDOGS is designed around risk and reward: the developer describes every purchase and moment-to-moment decision as carrying different levels of each. A low-cost kit that reaches the zone on time can be more valuable than a premium kit abandoned far from the fight.
Travel and the Control Zone
The zone may not be close to your starting position. A September 10, 2026 beginner guide from PC Gamer notes that a trip to the zone can take several minutes by car and recommends avoiding an unnecessary personal vehicle purchase when transport is already available. That is practical journalism advice, not an official rule or a guarantee that every map, build, or route has the same travel time.

- Check whether friendly transport is already moving toward the zone.
- Consider whether the vehicle will carry teammates or only you.
- Estimate how much of the match will be spent traveling instead of contesting.
- Remember that vehicle loss affects your cash, not only your current position.
When transport is available, use the saved money for the role that helps the team once you arrive. If no practical route exists, a vehicle can be a team tool rather than a personal luxury: coordinate its destination, fill its seats, and avoid leaving it exposed at the edge of the objective.

Voice chat and revives
Voice communication is especially consequential during a revive. The same PC Gamer beginner guide reports that an enemy can hear a downed player’s voice chat and advises not exposing a nearby reviver. This is independent gameplay advice, not a developer-stated scoring rule.
Use voice chat to report enemy direction, zone status, transport needs, and safe revive timing. If you are downed near opponents, avoid broadcasting information that reveals where a teammate is trying to help you. A headset with a microphone is optional; it is a convenience for players who want in-game voice communication, not a stated requirement for playing WARDOGS.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How progression currently works—and what is not confirmed
Do not confuse the persistent cash economy with a fully documented account-level progression system. The confirmed current behavior is that cash carries from match to match and that each life uses a purchased loadout. The Steam store page describes deeper progression systems and a stronger seasonal metagame as development plans, not as features that should be assumed to be live.
The available official material does not establish exact unlock thresholds, per-action cash rewards, progression levels, reward values, reset dates, or a complete current build table. If you see a guide listing precise prices or milestones, verify that the figures apply to the current game build before relying on them.

Early Access and platform plans
WARDOGS is in Early Access according to the developer FAQ. Balance, rules, progression, and platform plans can change. The FAQ mentions a console launch plan for 2028; that is a plan rather than a guaranteed release date. The current information supports PC development, but it does not justify treating the console plan as already available.
A decision framework for each life
| Situation | Priority | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Your team is behind on the next check | Reach the zone with a survivable, affordable kit. | Presence is what produces the point. |
| Your team controls the zone | Hold useful entrances and prepare for the next push. | A lead only matters if you remain the majority at the next check. |
| Teammates are down nearby | Assess enemy visibility before attempting a revive. | A careless rescue can create another casualty and lose zone presence. |
| You have little cash left | Use a modest loadout and a support job. | Persistent cash makes repeated high-risk purchases harder to sustain. |
| Transport is already available | Skip an unnecessary personal vehicle. | Keep money for equipment that affects the objective after arrival. |
Common beginner mistakes and corrections
Chasing kills away from the objective
Problem: You win a distant fight while your team loses the next scoring check. Correction: Tie every engagement to access, defense, or pressure on the Control Zone.
Buying a vehicle for convenience
Problem: You spend cash on a solo ride when a team vehicle is already available. Correction: Check transport first and buy a vehicle only when it performs a specific team job.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteSpending the reserve on an untested kit
Problem: One death leaves you unable to equip the next useful life. Correction: Start with a loadout whose cost matches your experience and the job you can realistically complete.
Treating a role as permanent
Problem: You keep playing medic, builder, or assault even when the team needs something else. Correction: Rebuild your next life around the current battlefield need; the purchase system is intended to let you change roles.
Talking without considering enemy proximity
Problem: Voice chat reveals a revive or nearby teammate. Correction: Keep callouts useful and limit sensitive information when downed.
What success looks like for a new player
- You can locate the Control Zone and understand when the next scoring check matters.
- You select a team and stay aware of both opposing factions.
- You buy a loadout for a clear job instead of copying an unverified “best build.”
- You contribute through presence, revives, construction, transport, or combat rather than measuring value only in kills.
- You protect enough cash to make the next life useful.
- You recognize which details are stable rules and which may change while the game remains in Early Access.
Once those habits are automatic, experiment with more expensive equipment, different routes, and specialized team roles. The game’s intended depth comes from combining those choices with a live, contested objective—not from unlocking a single universally correct class.
