For most players, start with Warcraft III: Reforged. It has the largest campaign package, four playable races, hero-led strategy, current matchmaking, ranked progression and a deep player-created-game ecosystem. Pick Warcraft I and II Remastered first when your priority is Warcraft’s earliest story, a simpler ruleset or Warcraft II’s retained multiplayer and compatible legacy maps.
You do not need to finish the first two games to understand Warcraft III. Playing them in release order is worthwhile for historical context, but the best choice depends on whether you value narrative origins and classic texture or modern controls, online systems and campaign scale.

The distinction is not simply “old graphics versus new graphics.” The first package preserves the design and atmosphere of early Warcraft while removing some of its friction. Warcraft III is a different kind of strategy game: smaller armies, stronger individual heroes, character-driven missions and a more developed online ecosystem.

What is included in each option?
Warcraft I and II Remastered
The remastered package covers the first two Warcraft real-time strategy games. Warcraft I presents the Orcs-and-Humans conflict through faction campaigns and custom skirmish games. Warcraft II continues the early-series design and retains its multiplayer functionality. Blizzard also says that existing legacy custom maps for Warcraft II remain compatible and playable.

Both games can switch between original and remastered graphics in real time. That toggle lets you inspect the original presentation without leaving a mission, then return to the updated artwork when you prefer it. The remaster also adds shared quality-of-life improvements such as tooltips, health bars, a mission-select screen and increased unit selection.
Warcraft III: Reforged
Warcraft III: Reforged recreates Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos and The Frozen Throne. Blizzard’s launch announcement describes a single-player campaign spanning more than 60 missions. The current product presentation lists four playable factions: Human, Orc, Undead and Night Elf.
Its design centers on heroes who gain power during missions, acquire abilities and shape how an army is used. That character-led structure makes the campaign feel closer to an interactive fantasy story than the earlier games’ more direct faction-versus-faction battles. Online, it adds matchmaking, social features, ranked systems and player-created games.

Why start with Warcraft I?
Warcraft I is the right starting point if you want to see the conflict in its earliest form. Its campaigns focus on the Orcs-and-Humans war before the series expanded its cast and mechanics. The remaster’s mission-select screen and faster speed reduce the time spent navigating an old interface, but the underlying game remains a foundational RTS rather than a modern hero strategy title.
Expect a compact ruleset and a direct military focus. You build a base, gather resources, produce units and fight through faction missions. The appeal is historical clarity: you can see the ideas that later Warcraft games elaborate, rather than beginning with the finished, character-heavy formula of Warcraft III.
What Warcraft II adds
Warcraft II develops the early formula and is the stronger choice of the two when you want classic multiplayer alongside the campaigns. Its continued multiplayer support and compatibility with legacy custom maps give it a community and preservation angle that the first game does not match in the supplied product description.
It still feels like an early Warcraft RTS, even with the remastered presentation and interface improvements. Choose it when you want the period’s map design, unit management and custom scenarios rather than the hero progression and modern matchmaking of Warcraft III.

What Warcraft III’s campaign changes
Warcraft III is the larger narrative package. The combined Reign of Chaos and The Frozen Throne campaigns contain more than 60 missions according to Blizzard’s launch announcement, and the four-faction structure gives the story a broader cast and more varied strategic identity.
Heroes are central rather than occasional. A hero’s abilities and growth can determine how you approach a mission, while the surrounding army supplies numbers, damage and tactical options. This makes the campaign more approachable for players who like story missions with distinctive objectives, but it also introduces more systems to learn than the first two games.
The 2026 Forsaken Kingdom addition
In 2026, Blizzard added the Forsaken Kingdom campaign to Warcraft III: Reforged. It includes a prologue, three campaign chapters and a neutral Forsaken Paladin hero. Blizzard’s announcement says existing Reforged owners receive the Definitive Edition update at no additional cost. This is additional Warcraft III content; it does not alter the campaign order you need to follow to understand the original story.
Do you need to play Warcraft I and II before Warcraft III?
No. Warcraft III is designed to stand on its own, and its campaign provides the context needed for its factions and characters. Starting there is sensible if you are new to classic RTS games or mainly want a substantial solo campaign with current online features.
Play in release order when you care about the evolution of Warcraft’s world and mechanics. A practical sequence is:
- Play Warcraft I to learn the original Orcs-and-Humans conflict and the earliest resource-and-army structure.
- Continue with Warcraft II for the more developed early formula, multiplayer and legacy custom maps.
- Move to Warcraft III: Reforged for the hero-driven campaigns, four-faction design and modern online systems.
If the first two games’ older pacing or controls become a barrier, skip directly to Warcraft III and return later for historical context. The games are related, but the remastered package is not a prerequisite.
Controls and interface: where the remasters save the most time
Warcraft I’s modernization
Warcraft I receives the most visible control upgrade. Blizzard’s remaster adds right-click movement, band-box selection and faster game speed. These changes address common sources of friction in an early RTS: selecting groups, issuing movement commands and waiting through slow production or travel.

The package also adds tooltips, health bars, a mission-select screen and increased unit selection. Together, those changes make information easier to read without replacing the game’s underlying missions and units. If you are curious about the original game but reluctant to manage its historical interface, this is the strongest argument for starting with the remaster.

Warcraft II receives the same broad UI/UX direction described for the package, while preserving its multiplayer and custom-map compatibility. You get clearer information and a more convenient presentation without giving up the scenarios that define its long tail.
Warcraft III’s configurable controls
Warcraft III: Reforged already has a more contemporary RTS structure, and patch 2.0, dated November 13, 2024, expanded its interface and control options. The patch added customizable hotkeys, replay and search improvements, a Reforged/Classic HD presentation toggle, ranked experience and leveling, and additional multiplayer options.
That combination matters if you expect to adjust key bindings, review matches or use current online systems. It also means Warcraft III offers more settings to understand at the beginning. A newcomer who wants the fewest decisions may find Warcraft I easier conceptually, while a newcomer who wants modern conveniences will generally find Warcraft III easier to live with.
Graphics and presentation: remastered art without losing the originals
The first package is built around an explicit before-and-after choice: switch between original and remastered graphics in real time. You can use the updated art for readability and then inspect the original look to understand how the game was presented at release. This is useful for players who value preservation as much as visual polish.

The same update added Classic HD assets, so the visual decision is not limited to a single fixed mode. The practical difference is that Warcraft III combines its visual options with a newer campaign, hero system and multiplayer stack, whereas Warcraft I and II use their visual flexibility to preserve an older design.
Multiplayer and custom games
When Warcraft II is the better online choice
Choose Warcraft II Remastered if your priority is continuity with classic multiplayer. Blizzard says its multiplayer functionality remains available and that legacy custom maps remain compatible and playable. That makes it the natural pick for someone who already has favorite old scenarios or wants to experience the early game’s custom-map culture.

The important qualification is that this is a preservation-oriented multiplayer experience. It does not offer the same set of modern matchmaking, ranked progression and social features highlighted for Warcraft III.
When Warcraft III is the better online choice
Warcraft III: Reforged is the stronger option for a contemporary online routine. Its feature set includes matchmaking, ranked systems, social features and a large player-created-game ecosystem. Patch 2.0 added ranked experience and leveling, replay and search improvements, customizable hotkeys and additional multiplayer options.
That ecosystem also changes how you can spend your time. You can play the campaign, queue for structured matches, review replays or look for player-created games rather than relying primarily on a preserved library of legacy scenarios.
Learning curve and beginner fit
Choose Warcraft I when you want the simplest foundation
- You want to understand the original resource, base-building and unit-production loop.
- You prefer a smaller historical system before learning heroes and faction-specific complexity.
- You are comfortable with a game whose modern conveniences are limited to the remaster’s documented improvements.
Choose Warcraft II when you want classic depth plus maps
- You want the early Warcraft style but expect to spend time in multiplayer.
- You value legacy custom maps and scenarios.
- You want more development than Warcraft I without moving yet to Warcraft III’s hero economy.
Choose Warcraft III when you want the most forgiving overall package
- You prefer a guided, character-led campaign with more than 60 missions across two major chapters.
- You want four factions with distinct identities: Human, Orc, Undead and Night Elf.
- You expect customizable hotkeys, modern matchmaking, ranked progression and player-created games.
- You want access to the 2026 Forsaken Kingdom addition as part of the current Reforged offering.
“Beginner-friendly” depends on what you find difficult. Warcraft I has fewer systems but a more dated feel. Warcraft III has more systems but explains its campaign through heroes and missions and gives you stronger modern interface options. For most first-time players, the second kind of difficulty is easier to manage.

Patch 2.0 substantially changes the practical case for Warcraft III: Reforged. On November 13, 2024, Blizzard added Classic HD assets, a Reforged/Classic HD presentation toggle, customizable hotkeys, replay and search improvements, ranked XP and leveling, and additional multiplayer options. Those are direct improvements to the areas that matter after the campaign: controls, presentation, match discovery, progression and review tools.
The 2026 Forsaken Kingdom campaign adds another reason to choose it if you want current content. Existing Reforged owners receive the Definitive Edition update at no additional cost according to Blizzard’s announcement. The update does not make the first two games obsolete; it strengthens Warcraft III as the all-purpose entry point.
Access, editions and price expectations
Blizzard currently lists all three games as PC titles available through PC Game Pass. Blizzard’s Warcraft 30th Anniversary announcement also describes a Warcraft Battle Chest containing all three games.

Regional pricing, availability windows and physical stock are not established here, so check the current listing for your country and account before buying. The official access information describes digital PC availability; there is no verified physical-product recommendation to add. If you already own Warcraft III: Reforged, Blizzard’s 2026 announcement says the Definitive Edition update and Forsaken Kingdom content arrive at no additional cost.
Decision guide: pick your first campaign in five minutes
- Do you mainly want the earliest Warcraft history? Start with Warcraft I Remastered, then continue to Warcraft II Remastered.
- Do you want old-school multiplayer and legacy maps? Start with Warcraft II Remastered.
- Do you want the largest single-player package? Start with Warcraft III: Reforged.
- Do you want heroes, four factions and a story built around named characters? Choose Warcraft III: Reforged.
- Do you want ranked online progression, matchmaking and player-created games? Choose Warcraft III: Reforged.
- Are you undecided? Begin with Warcraft III: Reforged; return to the remastered first two games if you want the historical route or Warcraft II’s legacy-map multiplayer.

The modern-first plan
Start with Warcraft III: Reforged and play its campaign before exploring matchmaking and custom games. Use the customizable hotkeys and choose between the Reforged and Classic HD presentation in the updated interface. Add Forsaken Kingdom after the main campaign when you want the newest story material.
The history-first plan
Begin with Warcraft I Remastered to establish the Orcs-and-Humans conflict, then move to Warcraft II Remastered for the more developed early formula and its multiplayer/custom-map support.
