You cannot buy or sell an X account under X’s stated rules. X also prohibits buying or selling usernames. A September 2026 snapshot found six venues advertising X accounts, but it does not establish that they are safe, permitted, or the “best”—and it does not substantiate a list of ten. If you want a handle, X’s official Handle Marketplace is the compliant route to request one; it grants a limited license to a handle, not ownership of an account.
Is buying a Twitter (X) account allowed?
No. X’s Authenticity rules prohibit “Trading, buying, selling (either through monetary or virtual compensation) or soliciting access of X accounts, including the temporary or permanent transfer or sales of accounts, username or X (e.g. ‘pay for affiliation’) products”. The prohibition covers temporary as well as permanent transfers.
X separately says that buying or selling usernames violates its username-squatting policy and may result in permanent suspension. Its Terms of Service, effective April 10, 2026, also say X may suspend or terminate accounts for violations of its Terms or Rules and Policies, among other reasons.
That means a seller’s “verified” label, escrow, warranty, or insurance does not make an account transfer compliant with X’s rules. X warns that attempts to sell or transfer handles or accounts may lead to the handle being reclaimed and involved accounts being suspended.

What the “10 best marketplaces” claim can—and cannot—mean
A marketplace snapshot published by TieUp, based on seller pages it read on September 18, 2026, identified six venues with X-account listings: AccsMarket, AccsZone, G2A, Z2U, Fameswap, and PlayerUp. It is a secondary description of listings, not an independent audit. The review did not purchase or test accounts, and it does not establish that any venue is safe, that a listed account can be transferred successfully, or that buying one complies with X’s rules.
The snapshot does not substantiate ten current marketplaces or a defensible “best” ranking. Its observations about seller claims and transaction protections vary, and some verification details, fees, dispute limits, and insurance terms were not stated in the material reviewed. Those omissions make it inappropriate to turn the venue names into recommendations.

These names are examples of venues found in that snapshot, not endorsements or assurances about current inventory or terms. A payment safeguard or seller promise cannot override X’s account-trading prohibition.

How to request a handle through X
If your goal is a particular username rather than another person’s account, X’s Handle Marketplace lets eligible users request available handles. Eligibility includes account-standing and subscription conditions. Requests are made from the account that will use the handle; a transfer fee may apply, and X may require identity verification.
- Check eligibility. Review X’s current Handle Marketplace requirements and confirm that the account intended to use the handle meets them.
- Request an available handle. Submit the request from that account through X’s Handle Marketplace process.
- Wait for a decision. X says most requests require at least seven days, though response times vary.
- Review the license terms. If approved, the result is a limited, revocable, non-transferable license to use the handle—not ownership of the handle or the account. X can reclaim it.
X warns that attempting to sell or transfer a handle or the account may result in reclamation and suspension. Check the official guidance for current eligibility and process details before applying, as platform rules can change.

What account-market research does—and does not—show
A 2024 study by Mario Beluri, Bhupendra Acharya, Soheil Khodayari, Giada Stivala, Giancarlo Pellegrino, and Thorsten Holz identified 38,253 advertised social-media accounts across 11 marketplaces, collected from February through June 2024. The study, Exploration of the Dynamics of Buy and Sale of Social Media Accounts, covers multiple social platforms. Its count is neither a current X-specific market-size estimate nor evidence that any account marketplace is reliable.

The available figures therefore should not be read as a count of X accounts currently for sale. The cited study is historical and cross-platform, while the 2026 venue snapshot describes observed listings without establishing a current market total.
