Wireless home-theater speakers can eliminate the long runs of speaker wire between a receiver or hub and the speakers. They do not eliminate every cable: speakers and hubs still need power, and HDMI eARC may still connect the TV to the audio system. Whether the change is worthwhile depends on which wires you want to remove, the audio formats you need, and whether compatible equipment can reach power outlets where you want the speakers.
What wireless changes—and what it does not
A wireless audio link can replace speaker-wire runs in a compatible system. WiSA describes its Home Theater technology as transmitting audio without speaker wires; that claim applies to WiSA systems, not to every product described as wireless. Lithe Audio, a speaker manufacturer, also describes wireless installation as offering placement and installation flexibility, but that is manufacturer guidance rather than an independent comparison.
Wireless does not mean cable-free. Each powered speaker and any hub or transmitter still needs electricity. A TV may also remain connected to the audio system over HDMI eARC. The practical question is therefore whether replacing the speaker-wire runs improves the room enough to justify the equipment and compatibility checks.
Which cables are you trying to get rid of?
Start by identifying the specific run that is awkward, visible, or impractical to route. A wireless speaker link is most relevant when the problem is a long run from the audio system to surround or other speakers. It will not solve a shortage of nearby power outlets, and it will not necessarily remove the TV-to-system HDMI connection.

- Visible or difficult speaker wiring: A compatible wireless system can avoid running speaker wire between its transmitter or hub and the speakers.
- Limited speaker-placement options: Wireless audio may make it easier to place speakers without routing signal wires across the room, but power access still constrains placement.
- Wanting to remove every cable: Wireless speakers are not a fit for that expectation; power and possibly HDMI connections remain.
Check audio formats, channels, and the TV connection
Do not assume that “wireless” alone tells you what audio a system can carry. Compare the formats and channel count supported by the complete system—TV, receiver or transmitter, and speakers—with the formats you actually use.
HDMI eARC supports high-bitrate audio, including uncompressed 5.1- and 7.1-channel audio and formats such as Dolby TrueHD, Dolby Atmos, DTS-HD Master Audio, and DTS:X, according to HDMI Licensing Administrator. Sony notes that both devices at either end of the connection must support eARC. Sony’s support material also states support for audio up to 192 kHz/24-bit, 37 Mbit/s bandwidth, and uncompressed 5.1/7.1 audio. Those are Sony’s stated capabilities, not a guarantee that every TV or audio system supports them.

WiSA Technologies states that its Home Theater system transmits up to eight channels of uncompressed 24-bit audio at 48 or 96 kHz. That is a vendor specification for its technology; it should not be generalized to other wireless systems or treated as an independent test result. If you rely on a particular format or channel layout, verify support for that format across every device in the signal path.

| Connection or specification | What the cited source says | What to verify for your setup |
|---|---|---|
| HDMI eARC | HDMI Licensing Administrator says eARC supports high-bitrate formats, including uncompressed 5.1/7.1, Dolby TrueHD, Dolby Atmos, DTS-HD Master Audio, and DTS:X. | Both the TV and connected receiver or soundbar need eARC support; confirm the formats each device accepts. |
| WiSA Home Theater wireless link | WiSA Technologies states support for up to eight channels of uncompressed 24-bit 48/96 kHz audio. | Confirm that the exact transmitter or hub and speaker set supports your desired channels and formats. |
| Sony eARC guidance | Sony states up to 192 kHz/24-bit, 37 Mbit/s audio bandwidth, and uncompressed 5.1/7.1 audio support. | These are Sony’s stated capabilities; check the specifications of your particular TV and audio equipment. |
Understand latency and synchronization claims
Wireless systems should state how they handle timing between speakers and, where relevant, synchronization with video. WiSA Technologies lists fixed latency of 2.6 ms at 96 kHz and 5.2 ms at 48 kHz for its technology. These are WiSA’s stated specifications, not independently verified measurements and not figures that apply to all wireless speakers. Look for a latency or synchronization specification for the exact system you are considering rather than inferring performance from the word “wireless.”

Compared to standard ARC, eARC delivers richer surround effects and greater detail. CEC integration allows the TV and soundbar to work together with unified control.
Verify compatibility before choosing a system
Compatibility is a system-level issue, not just a speaker feature. Check the exact transmitter, hub, speakers, and TV or receiver together. Certification or a shared wireless standard can help narrow options, but it does not replace checking supported formats, channel count, connections, and regional power requirements for the particular products.
- Confirm which device sends audio wirelessly and which speakers can receive it.
- Check the supported channel count and audio formats across the entire chain.
- Verify whether the TV or receiver needs eARC, and that both ends support it if you plan to use it.
- Check how the system handles latency and synchronization.
- Map power outlets for every powered speaker and hub before finalizing placement.
When wired eARC remains the better fit
If maximum audio quality is the priority and the wiring is manageable, wired connectivity remains a strong option. In a July 23, 2025 blog post, the HDMI Licensing Administrator stated: “The best way to get maximum audio quality is with wired connectivity rather than wireless.” That is the organization’s position, not a neutral independent test comparing every available system. Its eARC specification supports a broad set of high-bitrate formats, so a wired TV-to-audio connection may be preferable when those capabilities matter and the cable route is acceptable.

For eARC, Sony recommends a High-Speed HDMI cable with Ethernet. HDMI Licensing Administrator advises choosing a cable based on video capability and official cable labels. A compliant cable that meets the system’s requirements is the relevant goal; the cited guidance does not establish that a more expensive cable improves audio when an adequate one already meets those requirements.

A practical decision checklist
- Name the run you want to remove. Distinguish speaker wire from HDMI and power cables.
- List the audio you need. Note your required channels and formats, including any immersive or lossless formats.
- Check the whole signal path. Verify the TV, receiver or transmitter, and speaker system support the same formats and connections.
- Compare timing specifications. Look for the system’s stated latency and synchronization behavior; do not apply one vendor’s figure to another system.
- Plan placement around power. Confirm outlets are available where the speakers and hub would sit.
- Decide whether eARC stays. If the TV remains connected to the audio system by eARC, make sure both devices support it and select an appropriately rated HDMI cable.
