WAN stands for wide area network, and LAN stands for local area network. A LAN connects devices within a limited area, such as a home, office, or building. A WAN covers a broader area and can link separate networks. The internet is one example of a WAN, not another name for every WAN.
What does WAN stand for?
WAN means wide area network. It connects users, networks, or locations across a larger geographic area. A business network linking offices in different cities is one example; the internet is another. Cisco describes the internet as the world’s largest WAN, so “WAN” names a type of network rather than the internet alone. Cisco’s WAN overview explains the term and its scope.
What does LAN stand for?
LAN means local area network. It connects devices in a limited physical area, such as a home, office, or building. A LAN may serve one person or many users and devices; its defining feature is its local scope, not a particular device count. Cisco’s LAN overview describes local networks and their uses.
What is the difference between WAN and LAN?
The key difference is the network’s scope and what it connects. A LAN serves a local area; a WAN connects users or networks over a wider area. Wired versus wireless does not determine whether a network is a LAN or WAN.

- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
| Feature | LAN | WAN |
|---|---|---|
| Scope | A limited area, such as a home, office, or building. | A larger area that can span regions or connect dispersed sites. |
| What it connects | Devices on a local network. | Users, separate LANs, or other networks. |
| Example | Devices connected within a home or office. | The internet or an organization’s network linking separate sites. |
| Possible connections | May include wired and wireless devices. | May use links such as leased lines, cellular, or satellite connections. |
Cisco’s computer networking overview covers how networks connect devices and locations.
Is WAN the same as the internet?
No. The internet is a WAN, but WAN is the broader category. A private network that links an organization’s offices across a region can also be a WAN without being the public internet.

- Dual-band Wi-Fi with 5 GHz speeds up to 867 Mbps and 2.4 GHz speeds up to 300 Mbps, delivering 1200 Mbps of total bandwidth¹. Dual-band routers do not support 6 GHz. Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- Covers up to 1,000 sq. ft. with four external antennas for stable wireless connections and optimal coverage.
- Supports IGMP Proxy/Snooping, Bridge and Tag VLAN to optimize IPTV streaming
- Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
- Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks
Is LAN the same as Wi-Fi?
No. Wi-Fi is a way for devices to connect wirelessly; a LAN is the local network those devices can join. A LAN can include wired devices, wireless devices, or both. Likewise, a WAN is defined by its broader reach and connections, not by whether its links use a particular medium.

In a common home setup, a router connects local devices and manages traffic on the home LAN. The router also provides a path from that local network toward the modem and the internet service provider (ISP). Cisco describes the router’s role as connecting devices and directing network traffic, while the modem connects to ISP internet access. Cisco’s router explainer describes these roles.

- NIGHTHAWK WIFI 6 ROUTER FOR YOUR WHOLE HOME: Delivers fast, reliable WiFi across every room of your apartment or small home for streaming, gaming, video calls, and smart home devices, all running at the same time without slowing each other down.
- WORKS WITH YOUR EXISTING INTERNET SERVICE: Pairs with your existing modem or gateway via ethernet. Compatible with most cable, fiber, DSL, and satellite providers. Some gateways and modem router combos may require bridge mode. No coax needed.
- SET UP AND MANAGE YOUR NETWORK WITH THE NIGHTHAWK APP: Download the free Nighthawk app on iOS or Android for guided setup. Manage WiFi, run speed tests, pause devices, and set up guest networks from anywhere. Active internet required.
- READY FOR THE DEVICES YOU ALREADY OWN: Your phones, laptops, and TVs work right out of the box. WiFi 6 delivers speeds up to 1.8 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Backward compatible with WiFi 5 and earlier.
- COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
The physical arrangement varies: some homes use separate modem and router devices, while other equipment combines functions. The terms still describe different jobs—the LAN is the local network, and the WAN connection reaches beyond it.

Common misunderstandings
- “WAN means internet.” The internet is one WAN; other WANs connect private networks or locations.
- “LAN means Wi-Fi, and WAN means cable.” LANs can be wired or wireless, and WANs can use different kinds of links. Scope and interconnection are the useful distinction.
- “A LAN has to be tiny.” A LAN is local in scope, but it can serve anything from one user to many devices in a school or office.
- “The router and modem are the same thing.” They have distinct conceptual roles: the router connects devices and handles network traffic; the modem connects to ISP access. A single product may combine both functions.
