Check the exact listing before you buy. Walmart’s U.S. policy gives most purchases 90 days after purchase or receipt for a return or exchange, but exceptions apply. Beauty items do not have a single, published “opened cosmetics” rule, and Marketplace sellers can use different windows and conditions. Confirm the seller, the item-level return language, the condition requirements and the return methods shown for that product before placing your order.
What Walmart’s current policy actually says
Walmart’s U.S. Return Policy, displayed as updated October 9, 2026, states: “You have 90 days after purchase or upon receipt to exchange or return an item unless noted in our exceptions.” That is the general starting point, not a guarantee that every makeup or skincare listing qualifies for 90 days or that every condition is accepted.
Walmart’s exceptions list includes shorter windows for named categories. It also identifies most items bought from third-party sellers on Walmart.com (called Marketplace items) as a 30-day exception, while warning that a particular seller’s policy may differ. Because the policy is seller- and item-sensitive, the product page is the controlling place to check before checkout.
The current policy does not name makeup or skincare as a separate shortened-window category. That omission should not be read as a promise that all beauty products are returnable, nor as a blanket ban on opened products. The official material reviewed does not establish one universal rule for opened makeup or skincare.

The five checks to make before buying
1. Identify who sells the listing
On a Walmart.com product page, determine whether the seller is Walmart or a third-party Marketplace seller. The seller identity matters because Marketplace listings may have their own return policies and exceptions. Walmart lists most Marketplace items under a 30-day exception, but the seller’s specific terms still need to be read. Do not assume that two identical-looking products have the same return rights if one is sold by Walmart and the other by a Marketplace seller.
- Look for the seller name near the price, fulfillment and shipping information.
- Open the listing’s “Returns,” “Return policy” or equivalent details instead of relying on a search-result summary.
- If the page offers multiple sellers, check the terms for the exact seller and offer you intend to purchase.
2. Read the item-level return window
Check the number of days shown for that exact listing and identify when the clock starts. Walmart’s general U.S. rule is 90 days after purchase or receipt unless an exception applies. Most Marketplace items are listed as a 30-day exception in Walmart’s current policy, but a seller can present different terms. A shorter category-specific window may also apply to an item covered by another exception.
Save the order confirmation and a screenshot or PDF of the product-page return details at checkout. Policies and listing text can change, while your order record preserves what was displayed for that purchase.
3. Check condition and packaging language
Look for instructions about seals, packaging, accessories, hygiene, or the condition in which an item must be returned. The general Walmart policy does not create a blanket rule for opened makeup or opened skincare. A listing may contain additional condition language, and the return flow may apply an eligibility decision to your specific item.

Do not open a product solely to test whether it can be returned. If shade, texture, scent, ingredients, or compatibility is uncertain, resolve those questions before breaking a seal when the listing instructs you to keep the item in a particular condition.
4. Verify the return methods offered
For an online order, Walmart directs you to Purchase History and the “Start a return” option. The system then displays the methods available for that item. Depending on the product and your location, choices can include a Walmart store return, pickup, mail, or an eligible FedEx drop-off. The presence of one method on another Walmart purchase does not mean it will appear for your beauty item.

5. Keep proof of purchase
Retain the store receipt or online order details. Walmart’s policy asks for a receipt or order number. It says Walmart may try to look up a store purchase using the payment card used, or an online order using a phone number or email address. A lookup is not a reason to discard the receipt: keeping the original record makes the return easier to document.
Can you return opened makeup or skincare?
There is no single yes-or-no answer supported by Walmart’s current general policy. The policy reviewed does not establish that every opened cosmetic is accepted, and it does not establish that every opened cosmetic is excluded. Eligibility can depend on the listing, seller, stated condition requirements and the return options Walmart’s system provides.

Use this process when an item has been opened:
- Open the order in Walmart Purchase History.
- Select “Start a return.”
- Choose the item and the reason that most accurately describes the issue.
- Read the eligibility message and the condition or packaging instructions shown for that order.
- Review the offered methods and follow the instructions for the method you select.
If the flow does not offer a return, do not assume that the general 90-day statement overrides the item-level result. Contact Walmart support or the Marketplace seller through the order record and ask which policy applies to that exact item. Keep photos of the item, packaging, seal and any damage if the return concerns leakage, breakage, a wrong item or a product that arrived differently from the listing.

Walmart describes the Marketplace caveat in its policy: “Items purchased through third-party sellers on Walmart.com, referred to here as Marketplace might have different return policies & exceptions.” Treat the 30-day entry as a prompt to inspect the listing, not as permission to skip the seller’s terms.
How to check an online beauty order before checkout
On the product page
- Open the complete offer, not only a search card or recommendation tile.
- Locate the seller and fulfillment information.
- Expand “Returns” or “Return policy.”
- Record the return deadline, any condition or packaging requirements, and whether the item is excluded.
- Note whether the offer is sold by Walmart or by a Marketplace seller.
- Save the order confirmation after payment.
After delivery
- Inspect the outer box and product packaging before discarding anything.
- Compare the shade, size, quantity and product name with the order.
- Photograph leakage, damage, a broken seal or a wrong item.
- Keep the product, inserts and packaging together while you decide whether it meets your needs.
- Start the return from Purchase History if you need to confirm eligibility or obtain a label.

Return methods and the Walmart+ Returns from Home limitation
Walmart’s online return flow may offer a store return, pickup, mail or an eligible FedEx drop-off. The exact choices depend on the item. A method being listed for one order does not establish that it is available for another item, seller or location.
Walmart+ Returns from Home is limited to select eligible purchases and locations. Its terms specifically exclude cosmetics and skincare from the unpackaged handoff-to-driver option. In that option, the customer would otherwise hand an eligible unpackaged item to the driver; cosmetics and skincare are not eligible for that particular handoff. This restriction should not be generalized into a ban on every return method. Use the item’s own return flow to see whether a store, mail, pickup or other option is offered.

What to do in common beauty-return situations
The shade is wrong
Check the item’s eligibility and condition instructions before opening it. If the product was ordered in the wrong shade, use the reason that accurately describes your order and follow the flow’s instructions. A shade preference does not change the seller or deadline, so verify both before sending it back.
The product arrived damaged or leaking
Photograph the shipping box, inner packaging and product. Do not discard evidence until the return or replacement is resolved. Start the online return promptly and select the reason that matches the damage. The system will show whether a store, pickup, mail or another method is available.
The wrong item or quantity arrived
Compare the packing slip and order details with what you received. Record the item identifier, size and quantity, then start the return from Purchase History. Keep all items from the shipment together unless the instructions tell you otherwise.
The product was opened and caused a reaction
Stop using it and keep the container, lot information and packaging. The general policy does not answer every opened-beauty case, so check the item-level return result rather than relying on a blanket assumption. For a serious or persistent reaction, seek appropriate medical advice; a return decision does not replace medical care.

The listing came from a Marketplace seller
Read the seller’s terms and the return instructions attached to your order. Because most Marketplace items are listed under a 30-day exception and seller policies can differ, act on the shorter deadline if the listing gives one. Use Walmart’s order flow or the seller contact path presented there, and keep all messages with the order record.

Price, shade and ingredient choices may be your primary buying criteria, but return risk is easier to compare when the products are otherwise equivalent. Put the policy facts side by side:
- Seller: Walmart or a named Marketplace seller.
- Window: the number of days and the event that starts the clock.
- Condition: any seal, packaging or product-state instructions.
- Methods: the options shown after selecting “Start a return.”
- Evidence: whether your receipt, order number and photos are ready if needed.
A listing with a familiar brand or lower price is not automatically the easier return. The policy-relevant differences are the seller, item-level terms and available methods; Walmart’s published material does not establish a beauty formula or brand that should be preferred for returnability.
Timing checklist: avoid losing the window
- Save the delivery date and order number as soon as the package arrives.
- Check the listing’s stated deadline rather than assuming the general 90-day period.
- For a Marketplace item, check whether the listing uses a 30-day exception or another seller-specific period.
- Start the return in Purchase History before the deadline, even if you are still arranging the physical handoff.
- Follow the label, drop-off or pickup instructions generated for that order.
- Keep the confirmation, tracking information and any seller messages until the refund or exchange is complete.
The 90-day figure is Walmart’s general U.S. period, not a promise that every exception uses the same clock. A deadline shown for your item controls your planning.
Questions the policy does not answer universally
Several assumptions are unsafe:
- “All makeup has a shorter window.” The current exceptions list does not name makeup as a separate shortened-window category.
- “All skincare follows 90 days.” The absence of a skincare category does not override item-level exceptions or seller terms.
- “Opened products are always accepted.” No blanket opened-product rule is established.
- “Marketplace means exactly 30 days.” Walmart lists most Marketplace items as a 30-day exception, while also warning that third-party policies may differ.
- “Returns from Home proves cosmetics cannot be returned.” The cosmetics and skincare restriction applies to the unpackaged driver-handoff option described in the Walmart+ terms, not automatically to every return method.
When a listing and a general statement appear to conflict, use the product’s return details and the result of “Start a return” for that order, then ask Walmart or the seller for clarification before discarding packaging.

Start with the listing, not a generic beauty-return assumption.
