The strongest setup uses separate defenses for your exchange account and your wallet: a hardware security key for two-factor authentication, a withdrawal allow-list, official-only access, offline protection for recovery phrases, and deliberate review of every contract and approval. These controls can stop account takeovers and unauthorized transfers, but they cannot make a speculative meme coin legitimate or prevent a manipulated price from collapsing.
The SEC Division of Corporation Finance said on February 27, 2025 that meme coins are generally inspired by internet memes, characters, current events or trends, and are typically bought for entertainment or speculation with limited or no functionality. The statement is staff guidance, not a Commission rule or binding legal determination. Treat security settings and investment judgment as two different jobs.
What these settings protect—and what they cannot
Security settings address the ways a criminal can take control of an account, obtain an unauthorized withdrawal, trick you into signing a malicious transaction, or spend tokens through an existing approval. They do not assess a token’s liquidity, promoter honesty, code quality, market manipulation or long-term value.

Keep the two custody models distinct. On an exchange, the service controls the private keys and you protect an account login. In self-custody, your wallet controls the keys and you are responsible for signing transactions and safeguarding the recovery phrase. A hardware wallet reduces exposure of keys to internet-connected devices, but it does not certify a meme coin or a smart contract.

Harden the exchange account first
Use a unique password and phishing-resistant 2FA
Create a long, unique password for the exchange. Do not reuse it for email, cloud storage or any wallet-related service; an attacker who obtains your email can otherwise reset several accounts in sequence.
Open the exchange’s Settings or Security area and enable the strongest two-factor method it supports. A hardware security key is preferred because it verifies the legitimate sign-in origin instead of giving a phisher a code to relay. If a hardware key is unavailable, use an authenticator application rather than text messages where the exchange permits it, and store the service’s recovery codes offline. Register a second security key and test account recovery before you need it.
Turn on withdrawal allow-listing
In Security, Withdrawals or Address management, enable withdrawal allow-listing. Coinbase’s guidance states: “Turn on withdrawal allow-listing. Only allow on chain transfers to wallets that you know and trust.” Add an address only after independently checking the full address, network and destination wallet. A shortened address shown in a message or browser window is not enough.

Enable activity and device alerts
Turn on notifications for new logins, password or 2FA changes, newly recognized devices, withdrawal requests and allow-list edits wherever those options are offered. The Singapore Police Force advises monitoring accounts regularly and using activity notifications. Configure alerts to an email account that is itself protected by a unique password and strong 2FA.
Use only the official access route
Type the exchange’s known domain yourself or use an app installed from the platform’s official distribution channel. Phishing links can arrive through search advertisements, text messages, social networks, email and fake support pages. Do not use a link supplied by an unsolicited caller or direct message, even when the page displays familiar logos.
Coinbase states that no one will ask for your password, 2FA code, or a transfer to a specific new address, account, vault or wallet. The Singapore Police Force gives the same practical warning about private keys and recovery phrases. End any conversation that requests those items and open support from inside the official app or by entering the official domain yourself.

Use the exchange for the amount needed for active trading, not as a default vault for long-term holdings. Harden a self-custody wallet
Use hardware storage for higher-value holdings
A hardware wallet keeps signing keys in a device designed to remain isolated from ordinary online software. The Singapore Police Force says hardware wallets store cryptocurrency offline and are less vulnerable to online attacks. This protects the key from many remote compromises, but you still have to approve the correct transaction on the device and protect the recovery material.
Protect the recovery or seed phrase offline
Write the recovery phrase on a durable physical medium and keep it in a secure location separated from the wallet device. Do not photograph it, paste it into a website, place it in ordinary cloud notes, or send it to “support.” Anyone with the phrase can generally recreate the wallet on another device. The Singapore Police Force specifically advises physical secure storage and says not to share private keys or recovery phrases.
Make sure trusted heirs could find your documented recovery procedure without putting the phrase in an internet-connected account. Test that you can restore a wallet with a small amount before transferring significant value, and keep the test procedure private.

Turn on wallet warnings, but treat them as signals
Enable security alerts and transaction warnings in the wallet interface. MetaMask explains that its alerts and trust signals are informational; they are not an endorsement, approval or guarantee that a website, token or contract is safe. A warning-free screen is therefore not permission to sign blindly.

Inspect every connection and signature
Before connecting to a decentralized application or approving a transaction, check all of the following:
- The domain is the one you intentionally entered, not a look-alike spelling or a search-ad destination.
- The selected blockchain network is the network you expect.
- The recipient address matches the address you independently verified.
- The token contract address is the project address obtained from a trusted, separate source; a ticker and logo are not proof of identity.
- The amount, fee and deadline are understandable.
- The requested permission is limited to what the action requires. An unlimited token allowance is a high-risk default when a precise amount would work.
If the wallet display is unclear, the site pressures you to act immediately, or the requested function does not match the advertised purpose, reject the request and disconnect.
Review and revoke token approvals
A token approval is a permission granted to a contract or application to spend a specified token from your wallet. It can remain active after you stop using the application. Periodically review approvals in your wallet or with a trusted permission checker, disconnect suspicious decentralized-app sessions, and revoke permissions you no longer need.
Revocation is a separate blockchain transaction and can require a network fee. Confirm that you are revoking the correct contract and token, then wait for the transaction to confirm. The EU crypto-frauds factsheet recommends disconnecting and revoking suspicious permissions promptly.

Exchange custody versus self-custody
Neither model is universally safer. The right choice depends on which responsibilities you can perform consistently.
| Security question | Exchange custody | Self-custody wallet |
|---|---|---|
| Who controls the keys? | The exchange controls the private keys; you protect an account credential. | You control the keys and the recovery phrase. |
| Primary authentication | Unique password plus strong 2FA; a hardware key is preferred. | Wallet-device security plus protection of the recovery phrase; connected services may also require account 2FA. |
| Withdrawal control | Withdrawal allow-listing can restrict destinations when the platform offers it. | You authorize each transaction yourself; there is no exchange allow-list to stop a mistaken signature. |
| Contract and approval review | Usually limited to deposits, withdrawals and any application permissions the exchange exposes. | You must inspect decentralized-app connections, contract details and token allowances directly. |
| Incident response | The provider may lock an account and, in limited platform cases, freeze an account or blacklist an address. | You can disconnect applications and revoke permissions, but confirmed transfers normally cannot be reversed. |
Scams that settings cannot prevent
Hype, presales and rapid sell-offs
An SEC Investor.gov alert dated May 29, 2024 describes promoters creating a meme coin, advertising it through social media or a presale, and selling before the hype ends. Later buyers are left with a rapid price decline. A secure account cannot turn promotional claims into evidence. Do not make an investment decision solely from social-media posts, influencer endorsements or a countdown timer.
Fake profit dashboards and release fees
Fraudulent websites and apps may show fabricated profits and permit a small withdrawal to build confidence. The operator then demands an additional tax, fee or deposit to release the balance or recover a loss. Stop communicating when a platform asks for more money to unlock funds. Paying usually gives the scammer another opportunity and does not validate the displayed balance.
Impersonated support
Attackers may claim that your wallet is compromised and instruct you to move funds to a “safe” address, reveal a seed phrase or read out a 2FA code. Legitimate support does not need any of those secrets. Close the conversation and start a new support session through the official app or domain.
Before signing: a two-minute decision process
- Pause. Ignore urgency, limited-time rewards and messages that threaten account closure.
- Reopen the service independently. Use your saved official route rather than the supplied link.
- Identify the action. Decide whether you are swapping, transferring, minting, approving or merely connecting. If the wallet request does not match that purpose, reject it.
- Check the transaction on the wallet device. Compare network, recipient, token, amount and fee—not just the website’s summary.
- Inspect permissions. Prefer a limited allowance and note which contract will receive it.
- Record the result. Keep the transaction hash and review the approval list after the transaction confirms.
What to do after a suspected compromise
- Stop. Do not send another transaction and stop communicating with the suspected scammer.
- Move to a clean device. Change any reused passwords, beginning with the email account that controls the exchange, and enable strong 2FA.
- Lock the exchange account. If the provider has an in-app lock, use it first. Coinbase explicitly recommends locking the account when something feels wrong, then contacting support through the official channel.
- Cut off wallet access. Disconnect suspicious decentralized applications and revoke suspicious token approvals. If the recovery phrase may have been exposed, create a new wallet on a trusted device and move remaining assets only after checking every destination and transaction.
- Preserve evidence. Save transaction hashes, wallet addresses, domains, messages, email headers and screenshots. Provide them to the exchange and relevant authorities; do not alter screenshots or delete the original messages.
- Reject recovery-agent offers. The EU factsheet warns that recovery scammers may impersonate public authorities and demand a fee. No fee request proves that funds can be recovered.
Recovery expectations and ongoing maintenance
Blockchain transfers are usually irreversible once confirmed. A provider may sometimes freeze a scammer’s account or blacklist an address when the scam involved that provider’s platform, but this is case-specific and not guaranteed. Report quickly because platform intervention, when available, depends on the provider’s procedures and the state of the funds.
After setup, review exchange devices, withdrawal addresses, wallet connections and token approvals on a regular calendar schedule and whenever you finish using a decentralized application. Remove old allow-list entries and approvals, verify that alerts still reach you, and rehearse account recovery without exposing the recovery phrase. Security is strongest when these checks happen before a high-pressure transaction, not during one.
