Wake County Public Libraries is associated with new STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics) labs intended to support student learning, but the system’s specific launch announcement has not been publicly verified in the available information. That means the opening date, participating branches, equipment list, age requirements, registration rules and measured outcomes should not be treated as confirmed.
What is clear is that the library system already has the scale, programming capacity and technology-access mission to make hands-on STEAM activities useful to Wake County students. Families can use a free library card to access computers, electronic resources and downloadable books while they wait for branch-specific lab information.
What is confirmed about the STEAM Labs
No verified announcement identifies when the new labs opened or which locations host them. Why the program could matter for student success
Wake County Public Schools’ strategic-initiatives materials emphasize critical thinking, communication, collaboration, creativity, science, mathematics, digital literacy and student agency. Those priorities explain why libraries might use project-based STEAM activities: students learn by designing, testing, revising and explaining something rather than only reading about it.
Hands-on work can also provide a low-barrier setting for practicing teamwork and digital skills outside classroom hours. However, the available evidence establishes the policy rationale, not a measured effect from the new labs. No verified study or library report currently demonstrates improved grades, test scores or other student outcomes attributable to them.

That footprint does not prove every branch will have a STEAM lab. It does show why branch location, transportation and scheduling will be important once the library publishes a confirmed list.

What a library card provides now
AskWCPL says a Wake County Public Libraries card can be used at any of the system’s 20-plus libraries. Cardholders can check out physical materials, use library computers, access electronic resources and download eBooks and audiobooks. County residents and property owners can obtain a card at no charge.
The card-access information is verified for general library services, not as a special admission ticket for the STEAM Labs. A future lab may require a separate class registration, a drop-in policy, an adult present, or equipment-specific consent; none of those rules is confirmed yet.

Equipment categories linked to local STEM planning
A 2023 U.S. Department of Education application for Wake County Public School System Project Elevate lists equipment planned for school STEM spaces. It names programmable robots, LEGO Education SPIKE Prime robotics kits, Magnetiles, Makey Makey STEM kits, Strawbees, 3D printers, replacement filament, maker carts, flexible seating and STEM challenge cards.

These categories are useful indicators of the kinds of activities local educators have considered, such as coding robots, prototyping structures, experimenting with circuits and making 3D objects. They are not the inventory of Wake County Public Libraries. Families should not assume that a library branch owns a 3D printer or a particular robotics kit until the library confirms it.

Related technology access already available
WUNC reported on September 15, 2026 that Wake County Public Libraries had 100 Chromebooks and mobile hotspots available for one-week checkout across 13 branches. The effort was supported by a $398,700 North Carolina Department of Information Technology grant.
This program demonstrates an established library focus on reducing technology-access barriers. It is separate from the STEAM-Lab launch and does not establish lab locations, equipment or student results.
What families should verify before visiting
- Branch: Confirm whether the activity is at a regional or community library and check the exact address.
- Schedule: Ask whether sessions recur, require registration or operate as drop-in activities.
- Age and supervision: Verify the eligible age range and whether an adult must remain onsite.
- Equipment: Check which tools are actually available that day, including robotics kits, computers or 3D printers.
- Accessibility: Ask about accessible seating, assistive technology, sensory considerations and staff support.
- School connection: Determine whether the activity supports a class assignment or is general enrichment.
Until an official announcement answers these questions, the safest assumption is that STEAM-lab details vary by branch and may change as the program rolls out.

A useful launch notice should identify participating branches, opening dates, equipment, age limits, registration or drop-in procedures, supervision requirements, accessibility arrangements and any fees. It should also explain how the library will evaluate student participation or learning. Those details are the information families need to plan—not just a general description of STEAM programming.
