Research has not measured how much time people lose while waiting for one particular reply. It has, however, found that phone notifications can interrupt attention even when you leave the phone untouched. If you are checking for a message, you can reduce those interruptions by choosing when alerts arrive and when you check—without assuming that turning everything off is right for everyone.

Why a message can pull your attention before you open it

An expected reply can make the phone feel like something you need to monitor. An alert may break concentration even if you do not pick up the device: in a 2015 experiment, Cary Stothart, Ainsley Mitchum, and Courtney Yehnert found that cell-phone notifications disrupted performance on an attention-demanding task when participants did not interact with their phones. That finding concerns notifications in an experiment; it does not establish that anticipation of a particular reply always harms performance.

Checking behavior is also linked to reported productivity loss, but the direction of the relationship is not settled by that evidence. A 2018 self-report study of 262 participants found associations among smartphone addiction, checking, and self-reported productivity loss. Because participants reported their own behavior and outcomes, the study does not prove that checking caused the losses.

What studies say about changing notification habits

Reducing communication alerts

A 2023 field experiment with 247 participants examined a one-day intervention in which the experimental group disabled communication notifications. The study reported better performance and lower strain overall when notification-caused interruptions were reduced. Effects varied with participants’ fear of missing out and telepressure—the pressure to respond promptly—so the result should not be treated as a guaranteed benefit for every person or workplace.

Receiving alerts in batches

A 2019 randomized field experiment with 237 participants compared usual notifications, notifications batched three times a day, and no notifications. Its abstract reports improvements in several self-reported outcomes for the batching group. The no-notification group experienced more anxiety and fear of missing out, which is a reason not to present disabling every alert as a universal fix.

Choose a notification approach that fits your day

Approach What it may offer What to weigh
Immediate alerts Fast notice of messages that may need a prompt response Alerts can interrupt attention, including without phone interaction.
Scheduled or batched checks Regular opportunities to see messages with fewer interruptions between checks; one field experiment studied delivery three times daily. Messages may wait until the next check, so consider which conversations are genuinely urgent.
Alerts disabled Fewer notification-caused interruptions Some people may experience anxiety or fear of missing out, or compensate by checking the phone themselves.

There is no single best setting in the cited evidence. Consider how urgent your messages are, whether work or caregiving duties require reachability, and how strongly you feel pressure to respond. You can also try a limited change—such as batching non-urgent app notifications while leaving essential calls available—and see whether it suits your routine. These are practical options to test, not clinical advice or guaranteed productivity improvements.

Make waiting less disruptive in practice

  1. Decide what truly needs an immediate alert. Keep prompt notifications for essential contacts or responsibilities, and silence or schedule less urgent communication where your device and apps allow it.
  2. Pick check times that match your obligations. Use a few planned checks during a work block rather than reopening messages whenever you wonder whether a reply has arrived. Three daily notification batches have been studied, but that schedule is not a prescription for every day or person.
  3. Put the phone out of reach during a focused interval. If you still find yourself checking, a timed phone lock box is one possible physical aid. None of the studies cited here tested a lock box, so it should be understood as a practical idea, not a proven intervention.
  4. Review how the change feels. If fewer alerts help you concentrate but make you anxious or cause repeated self-checking, adjust the schedule or keep a reliable route open for urgent messages.

What the evidence cannot tell you about a waiting afternoon

The cited experiments and survey do not quantify hours spent waiting for a particular reply, establish how often people experience this exact situation, or show that anticipation alone caused lost work time. “Spending your afternoon” is a metaphor for attention that can stay tethered to the phone; it is not a measured duration. The evidence supports managing interruptions, while the right balance between availability and focus depends on your circumstances.
