No. Buying a movie on Vudu—now Fandango at Home—gives you licensed access to watch it under the service’s terms; it does not give you ownership of the film’s copyright or an unrestricted copy. Some eligible purchases can also be shared with linked Movies Anywhere retailers, but that portability has limits.
What does “buy” mean on Vudu?
Vudu’s current name is Fandango at Home. When you buy a movie there, you acquire a digital viewing entitlement: permission to stream or download the title as the service allows. Fandango’s Streaming Policy describes purchased content and locker-service access; it does not transfer the movie’s copyright to you.

The distinction is explicit in Movies Anywhere’s Terms of Use, which call the arrangement a license rather than a sale or assignment of rights, and state that buying a license to stream or download content does not create an ownership interest in it. “Buy” is the retailer’s transaction label, not a promise that you own the film itself.
Can you watch a purchased movie somewhere else?
Sometimes. Fandango at Home purchases may be eligible for a Movies Anywhere locker, which can share eligible digital entitlements with linked participating retailers. This is account-based access, not a transferable movie file, and it does not make every purchase portable.

Eligibility depends on the purchase and title
Fandango says not all purchases made on an EST basis qualify for locker access; some may be available through one locker service but not multiple services, and content not purchased on an EST basis is not made available through a locker. Check the individual movie’s Fandango listing for Movies Anywhere eligibility rather than assuming that a purchase will transfer.
Link accounts and check the receiving library
- Open the movie’s Fandango at Home listing and confirm that it is eligible for Movies Anywhere.
- Link your Fandango at Home account to Movies Anywhere and connect the participating retailer accounts you want to use.
- Check the connected retailer’s library to confirm the title appears. Availability at the receiving retailer still matters, and that retailer’s own rules govern how you watch there.
Movies Anywhere describes account linking as a way to share eligible entitlements automatically among connected retailers. Its service is limited to eligible residents of the United States and specified U.S. territories and associated states, and members must be at least 18 under its current terms. Retailer participation can change
As of June 8, 2026, Movies Anywhere listed Apple iTunes, Amazon Prime Video, Fandango, Google Play/YouTube, Xfinity, Verizon Fios TV, and DIRECTV as digital retailers. The participating studios listed included Sony, Universal, Disney/20th Century, Warner Bros., and Lionsgate. Movies Anywhere says participants may change; consult its participating retailers page for the current list.
Does a digital purchase guarantee permanent access?
No fixed guarantee of permanent access is established by the policies. Fandango’s Terms of Use make access subject to the terms in effect at the time, while Movies Anywhere’s terms reserve the right to modify or discontinue parts of its service. This does not predict that a service will close; it means digital access remains governed by service terms and features that can change.

How does a digital purchase compare with a disc?

What should you do before buying?
- If you want access across retailers, check the movie’s listing for Movies Anywhere eligibility before purchase.
- If you buy digitally, link accounts only after confirming the title qualifies, then verify that it appears in the connected library.
- If having a physical copy matters to you, check the exact disc format and edition. Treat any included digital code as a separate licensed benefit, not as a substitute for ownership of the film.
