VSCodium and Microsoft Visual Studio Code share the Code – OSS codebase, but they are not the same distribution. VSCodium is a community-built, MIT-licensed build that disables several telemetry-related settings by default and uses Open VSX as its extension gallery. Visual Studio Code is Microsoft’s licensed distribution, with Microsoft-specific customizations, proprietary assets, and direct Visual Studio Marketplace integration.
The practical choice depends on three checks: whether your required extensions are available and licensed for the editor you use, whether you need Microsoft-only integrations, and how much control you want over editor telemetry and online services. Neither editor should be treated as automatically offline, and turning off editor telemetry does not necessarily stop an extension from collecting data.
What’s the difference between VSCodium and Visual Studio Code?
Both editors present the familiar Code editor experience: workspaces, language support, debugging interfaces, source-control views, settings, and an extension system. Their important differences come from distribution rather than from a completely different editor architecture.

| Source relationship | Community-built binaries assembled from Microsoft’s public vscode source. | Microsoft distribution of the MIT-licensed Code – OSS repository, with Microsoft-specific customizations. | Features can vary by distribution and release. |
| Editor license | VSCodium describes its binaries as MIT-licensed builds. | The Code – OSS source is MIT-licensed, while Microsoft distributes VS Code under a Microsoft product license. | Check the editor license separately from every extension’s license. |
| Telemetry defaults | Several telemetry-related settings are disabled by default. | Telemetry is configurable, including an off level. |

| Default gallery | Open VSX. | Visual Studio Marketplace. | Confirm publisher, version, license, update source, and compatibility. |
| Microsoft-specific integrations | Some proprietary Microsoft extensions and debugging tools are unavailable or require the official build. | Supported within Microsoft’s Visual Studio product family. | Check the terms for each Microsoft extension or remote feature. |
| Other network activity | Updates, announcements, extension checks, Open VSX, and extension services can still connect to the internet. | Updates, extension services, settings search, experiments, and other online services are separate from telemetry. | “Telemetry off” is not the same as “no network connections.” |
That means VSCodium is not simply “VS Code without features.” It is a closely related build with different defaults, services, licensing boundaries, and access to extensions. Conversely, VS Code is not an unavoidable all-or-nothing tracking choice: its telemetry level can be changed, although extensions and other online services require separate review.

Does VSCodium have telemetry?
VSCodium’s documentation says its build scripts do not pass Microsoft’s telemetry build flags and that several telemetry-related settings are disabled by default. The documented defaults include telemetry.telemetryLevel and workbench.enableExperiments. Those defaults reduce the editor’s built-in telemetry and experimentation, but they do not guarantee that every component is silent.
How VS Code telemetry levels work
Microsoft documents three categories: crash reports, error telemetry, and usage data. The telemetry.telemetryLevel setting controls which categories are enabled:
| Level | What Microsoft documents it as including |
|---|---|
all |
Crash reports, error telemetry, and usage data. |
error |
Crash reports and error telemetry. |
crash |
Crash reports only. |
off |
Disables those three editor telemetry categories. |
In VS Code, open Settings, search for telemetry level, and choose the required level. You can also open the JSON settings editor and set:
{
"telemetry.telemetryLevel": "off"
}
Microsoft’s enterprise documentation says that choosing off or error also disables A/B experimentation. You may therefore receive some features later, after they become generally available, rather than during an experiment.
What VSCodium changes by default
VSCodium starts with telemetry-related settings disabled rather than asking every user to change them manually. Its documentation still recommends reviewing settings tagged @tag:usesOnlineServices. That tag is useful because online services include more than telemetry: update checks, extension discovery and updates, project announcements, and services used by individual extensions can all involve network requests.

Why the editor setting cannot promise complete privacy
Microsoft’s FAQ and enterprise guidance both warn that extensions may collect their own usage data and that some third-party extensions may not respect the global telemetry level. VSCodium makes the same limitation explicit: the project cannot control telemetry implemented inside an extension.
For a privacy-sensitive installation, treat the editor and each extension as separate software components:

- Disable extension-specific analytics settings when the extension provides them.

Can I use my VS Code extensions in VSCodium?
Sometimes. Extension compatibility is not automatic, and there is no reliable rule that all VS Code extensions work or that none work. Check each required extension in the gallery available to your editor.
Why an extension may be missing
VSCodium uses Open VSX by default, while Microsoft VS Code uses the Visual Studio Marketplace. Open VSX is a separate registry, so an extension that appears in Microsoft’s gallery may not have been published there. VSCodium specifically warns that some extensions familiar from the Visual Studio Marketplace are missing.
Absence can mean several things: the publisher has not released the extension to Open VSX, the listed version differs, the publisher’s license restricts redistribution, or the extension depends on Microsoft-only services.

Why an extension may install but still fail
Some extensions check the product identifier and require the official VS Code build. VSCodium documents proprietary debugging tools and other Microsoft extensions that work only with official builds. An extension can therefore be present in a registry yet refuse to activate, omit a feature, or fail during an update in a forked distribution.

- Write down every extension you rely on, including language servers, debuggers, remote-development tools, formatters, linters, and authentication helpers.
- Search for each extension in VSCodium’s Extensions view, which uses Open VSX by default.
- Compare the exact publisher, extension identifier, current version, release notes, license, and stated product requirements.
- Check whether the extension documents Microsoft Marketplace, Microsoft account, or official-build requirements.
- Install a non-critical extension first and verify activation, updates, commands, debugging, and sign-in before migrating a production workspace.
- If an extension is not in Open VSX, ask its maintainer whether an Open VSX publication is supported, or obtain a VSIX from the project’s legitimate release source only after checking its provenance and license.
Installing a VSIX does not remove product restrictions. A package can still require the official product, a Microsoft service, or a license that does not permit use in a fork.
Does VSCodium use the Visual Studio Marketplace?
No. VSCodium’s default gallery is Open VSX. Microsoft VS Code integrates the Visual Studio Marketplace.
Microsoft’s Marketplace FAQ states that Marketplace offerings are for Visual Studio Products and Services and that alternative products built on Code – OSS forks are not permitted to access the Marketplace. Microsoft also states that extensions it publishes through the Marketplace are not licensed for use outside the product family listed in its terms.
Those terms matter when evaluating unofficial gallery settings, copied gallery endpoints, or downloaded packages. Do not assume that making a fork point at Microsoft’s service is an approved or supported configuration. If a required extension is available only through Microsoft’s Marketplace or is restricted to official VS Code, the compliant choice may be the Microsoft distribution.

Open VSX and Marketplace are not interchangeable inventories
| Question | Open VSX in VSCodium | Visual Studio Marketplace in VS Code |
|---|---|---|
| Default in the editor | Yes. | Yes. |
| Same extension catalog | No; publication and versions are managed separately. | No; it is Microsoft’s own catalog and terms apply. |
| Missing extension remedy | Ask the maintainer to publish there or use a legitimate VSIX source if permitted. | Usually install from the integrated Marketplace, subject to the extension’s terms. |
| Compatibility guarantee | None; product checks and proprietary dependencies can still block activation. | Marketplace availability does not guarantee that every extension works in every workspace or edition. |
Which editor has the features I need?
The editor surface is substantially related because both products descend from Code – OSS. The differences become visible around services and proprietary integrations rather than basic editing.
Features you can generally expect in both distributions
- Code editing with workspace and project settings.
- Language support delivered through extensions or built-in components.
- Integrated source-control views and common developer workflows.
- Extension-based customization.
- Debugging interfaces where a compatible debugger or adapter is available.
The exact set depends on the release, operating system, installed extensions, and enabled services. The shared source ancestry does not make every binary identical.
Where the Microsoft build has an advantage
Microsoft’s distribution includes proprietary assets and direct Marketplace integration. Microsoft-specific extensions, remote features, authentication flows, and debugging tools may be designed and supported only for the official build. If your organization standardizes on a Microsoft extension or relies on a feature that checks the official product identity, VS Code avoids the compatibility uncertainty of a fork.
Where VSCodium has an advantage
VSCodium provides a ready-to-install MIT-licensed build from the public source without requiring you to compile Code – OSS yourself. Its telemetry-related defaults are more restrictive, and Open VSX gives it a gallery aligned with that distribution. For teams that value those defaults and whose required extensions are available under acceptable terms, VSCodium can reduce manual privacy configuration.
What neither editor can promise
- Identical extension availability.
- Identical behavior for proprietary Microsoft integrations.
- Zero network traffic.
- Zero extension telemetry.
- Identical update timing or experimental feature rollout.
- Equivalent support obligations for every extension.
How licensing differs
Licensing operates at multiple layers. Microsoft says the public vscode repository, known as Code – OSS, is available under the MIT license. Microsoft’s distribution of VS Code adds Microsoft-specific customizations and is governed by a Microsoft product license. VSCodium describes its binaries as MIT-licensed builds assembled from that source.

An extension is a separate work. Its license, privacy policy, redistribution rights, and product restrictions apply independently of the editor. Before moving an extension between distributions, check:
- Whether the extension license permits use in your chosen editor.
- Whether redistribution through Open VSX is authorized.
- Whether the extension requires the official VS Code product.
- Whether a downloaded VSIX came from the publisher or another trusted release channel.
- Whether your employer’s policy permits the extension’s data collection and cloud services.
“Open source editor” therefore does not mean “every extension is open source” or “every marketplace package can be reused anywhere.”
How to choose between VSCodium and VS Code
Choose VSCodium when these conditions fit
- You prefer telemetry-related settings disabled by default.
- Your required extensions are available through Open VSX or from legitimate sources that permit your use.
- You do not depend on Microsoft-only debugging, remote, authentication, or productivity integrations.
- Your organization is comfortable evaluating extension privacy and licenses independently.
- You want an MIT-licensed build assembled from the public Code – OSS source.
Choose Microsoft VS Code when these conditions fit
- A required extension is published only in the Visual Studio Marketplace.
- A Microsoft extension or debugging tool requires the official build.
- Your organization needs Microsoft’s supported product family and Marketplace terms.
- You want direct access to Microsoft-specific integrations without testing fork compatibility.
- You are willing to configure telemetry and online-service settings to match policy.
Use a requirement-first decision
- Mark each extension and integration as essential, useful, or optional.
- For every essential item, verify gallery availability, product compatibility, license, privacy policy, and update path.
- Decide whether your policy treats editor telemetry, extension telemetry, and general online services as separate controls.
- Test one representative workspace, including debugging and sign-in, before standardizing an organization-wide image.
- Document the chosen gallery and approved extension sources so future updates do not silently change the privacy or licensing position.
Migration checklist
Moving between distributions is usually straightforward for workspace files, but the extension and service layer needs deliberate checking.
- Back up or record your current editor settings, profiles, snippets, tasks, and launch configurations.
- Inventory installed extensions and identify which ones are essential to daily work.
- Install the target editor without deleting the original until the test is complete.
- Install extensions from the target editor’s default gallery or an authorized VSIX source.
- Open a representative project and test language features, formatting, linting, source control, debugging, terminals, remote connections, and authentication.
- Review telemetry and online-service settings in the new distribution.
- Confirm that extension updates come from the source your organization has approved.
- Keep the original editor available until all essential workflows pass.
Common problems and fixes
“The extension does not appear in VSCodium”
Search Open VSX for the exact identifier and publisher. If it is absent, check the maintainer’s release documentation for Open VSX publication or an authorized VSIX. Do not assume that changing gallery endpoints is permitted under Microsoft’s Marketplace terms.
“The extension installs but says it requires VS Code”
That is a product-compatibility check, not merely a missing dependency. Look for a VSCodium-compatible alternative, ask the maintainer whether fork support is intended, or use the official VS Code distribution if the extension is essential.
“I set telemetry to off, but the application still connects”
Separate editor telemetry from online services and extension behavior. Review update checks, extension gallery traffic, announcements, settings services, and each extension’s privacy settings. The documented off level covers the three editor telemetry categories, not every possible network request.
“A feature arrived later in my installation”
In VS Code, off and error disable A/B experimentation, so experimental rollouts may not appear until general availability. Different distributions and extension galleries can also publish updates on different schedules.
Bottom line for 2026
Pick VSCodium for its privacy-oriented defaults when Open VSX and your extension licenses cover the work you actually do. Pick Microsoft Visual Studio Code when Marketplace availability, Microsoft-specific integrations, or official-build support are requirements. In either case, evaluate telemetry, online services, extension behavior, and licensing separately; the editor choice alone does not settle all four questions.
