VR locomotion is how a person moves through or navigates a virtual environment. It includes methods that map real steps to virtual travel and interfaces—such as joystick controls or teleportation—that move the virtual viewpoint. No single method is best for everyone: comfort, continuity, available room, and the task all matter.
What does VR locomotion mean?
Locomotion is the interaction design that turns a person’s physical movement or input into movement in a virtual environment. It is a family of techniques, not a specific headset feature or one universally preferred control scheme. Designers balance natural-feeling movement, usability, travel efficiency, spatial reach, immersion, and the risk of VR sickness. For a broad overview of the design problem, see Al Zayer, MacNeilage, and Folmer’s 2020 survey.
It helps to distinguish physical locomotion from virtual locomotion techniques. With physical locomotion, your body moves in the real room and the system maps those steps into the virtual world. Virtual techniques create or extend movement through an interface. A tracked play area is finite, so virtual methods become useful when you need to travel farther than the room allows.

Common approaches differ in what the user does, whether movement is continuous, and whether the body travels in the real room.

| Method | How it works | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Room-scale walking | You walk physically, and tracked steps move you through the virtual environment. | Direct bodily movement, but travel is limited by the safe tracked area. |
| Walking in place | You make step-like movements while staying roughly in place; the system translates them into virtual travel. | Provides bodily movement cues without requiring the same amount of floor space as walking through the scene. |
| Controller or joystick movement | You use a controller input to move continuously through the virtual environment. | Can extend travel beyond the room, but the virtual movement is not matched by physical translation. |
| Teleportation | You select a destination, often by pointing a tracked controller, and the viewpoint moves there in a jump or rapid transition. | Fast travel without continuous visual motion during an instant jump, but the change of viewpoint can interrupt continuity. |
| Redirected walking | The system subtly rotates the virtual scene so that a perceived straight route corresponds to a curved physical route. | Retains the sensation of walking while fitting movement into bounded space, but still requires a safe physical area. |
These labels are not mutually exclusive. An application may offer both joystick movement and teleportation, or combine physical walking with redirection. To understand a particular control scheme, check what input it uses, whether travel is continuous, and whether your body actually moves.
What are the comfort and immersion trade-offs?
Comfort and sickness risk
Continuous virtual movement can create visual cues that you are moving without matching signals from your balance system or body. Teleportation avoids continuous optical flow during an instant jump, which reviews identify as one reason it can have lower sickness risk. That does not guarantee comfort for every person, and a rapid continuous transition is not identical to an instant jump. The 2025 review, “Teleportation in Virtual Reality; A Mini-Review”, discusses teleportation as a locomotion technique.

Continuity and bodily movement
Walking physically or walking in place provides movement cues from the body. Teleportation can cover ground quickly, but a visual jump may break the sense of continuous travel. Redirected walking aims to preserve ordinary walking while gently shaping the route perceived in the headset.
Room, control, and task
Room-scale walking is constrained by tracked space. Joystick movement and teleportation can carry you beyond the physical room, while redirected walking still depends on a safe area in which to walk. Controller familiarity may make joystick movement easy to learn; teleportation can make navigation quick, though selecting a destination and adjusting to jumps change the interaction. Walking in place requires leg movement, whereas controller movement can leave you relatively stationary. Whether a method works well when your hands need to do other tasks depends on the application and implementation.

What do studies say about VR locomotion?
In a 2019 comparison, Konstantinos Boletsis studied 26 adults completing a game-like task with walking in place, controller/joystick movement, and teleportation using HTC Vive hardware. The study used questionnaires and interviews. Participants reported the highest immersion with walking in place, alongside high psychophysical discomfort; they found controller movement easy to use, in part because it was familiar; and they considered teleportation effective for fast navigation, while its visual jumps interrupted immersion. These findings describe one study and setup, not a population-wide ranking.
Boletsis’s 2017 systematic review covered empirical literature from 2014–2017: it examined 36 articles and recorded 73 instances of 11 locomotion techniques. It proposed four broad categories—motion-based, room-scale-based, controller-based, and teleportation-based—as a way to organize the methods. The categories are a useful taxonomy, not a complete list of every technique used in current applications. See Boletsis’s 2017 review and his 2019 comparison.

How to choose a movement method
- For direct bodily movement: Look for physical walking or walking in place, while considering the room available and the amount of physical effort involved.
- For travel beyond the play area: Controller movement or teleportation can extend virtual reach without walking across the room.
- For quick navigation: Teleportation is designed for fast repositioning, but its jumps can interrupt visual continuity.
- For continuous movement through a scene: Joystick movement provides continuous virtual travel; comfort can vary because visual motion may not match bodily movement.
- For walking within a bounded area: Redirected walking attempts to fit a longer perceived route into a smaller physical space, but it does not remove the need for a safe walking area.
Rather than asking which method is universally easiest or most comfortable, consider what the application asks you to do, how much space you have, whether you prefer continuous travel or jumps, and how your body responds. The available evidence does not establish a universal winner or a population-wide rate of sickness.
