Choose a VPS if OpenClaw must stay online continuously, maintain a stable network connection, and keep working while your laptop sleeps. Choose a home server when local files, a visible browser, or nearby devices are central to the automation and you can keep a dedicated machine powered, reachable, updated, and secured.
OpenClaw also supports a hybrid design: run the Gateway on a VPS as the persistent source of truth, then pair local Mac, iOS, Android, or headless devices as nodes for capabilities that belong on your home network.
VPS and home server at a glance
| Decision factor | VPS | Home server |
|---|---|---|
| Availability | Designed for always-on operation, stable networking, and no laptop-sleep interruptions. | Can be always on, but only if the machine, power, network, and maintenance routine remain reliable. Laptops and desktops may pause during sleep, reboots, or updates. |
| Local files and visible browser | Usually provides remote file access and headless browser automation. | Best when OpenClaw needs files on your LAN or a browser window you can see and interact with. |
| Administration | You maintain the server through SSH and must harden both the host and Gateway access. | You maintain hardware, operating-system updates, backups, remote access, and physical security. |
| Resource planning | OpenClaw’s FAQ states an absolute minimum of 1 vCPU, 1 GB RAM, and about 500 MB disk; 1–2 vCPU and at least 2 GB RAM gives more headroom. | The same workload determines sizing. A small single-board computer is not automatically sufficient for browser or media-heavy tasks. |
| Cost | Provider prices and regional availability vary; no universal cost winner is established. | Total cost depends on hardware, electricity, internet service, replacement parts, and your maintenance time. |
| Isolation | A dedicated VPS can separate a shared agent from personal accounts and computers. | A dedicated physical machine can provide similar separation, but still needs strict accounts, updates, and access controls. |
OpenClaw’s official FAQ gives the practical rule: “Default recommendation: VPS if you have had gateway disconnects before; local is great when you are actively using the Mac and want local file access or visible-browser UI automation.” That is documentation guidance, not an independent benchmark.
How OpenClaw hosting is arranged
The Gateway is the persistent control point
The Gateway owns OpenClaw’s state and workspace. In the Linux server model, it runs on the VPS while your laptop or phone connects through the Control UI or through Tailscale or SSH. Treat that host as the source of truth and back up its state and workspace regularly.

Everything stays effortlessly organized, powered by intelligent tagging and recognition.
A home server puts the Gateway beside your devices
With a home installation, the Gateway runs on a machine inside your network. This can make local files and visible browser sessions straightforward, but the machine must remain powered and reachable. A shared daily-use computer can work for testing or active sessions; sleep, user logouts, updates, and reboots can interrupt automations.
Nodes separate central uptime from local capabilities
You do not have to choose one machine for every capability. A VPS Gateway can pair with local Mac, iOS, Android, or headless nodes. The Gateway remains available from the internet, while a node performs tasks that require a local filesystem, local browser, camera, or other device-specific access.
When a VPS is the better choice
You need unattended, always-on operation
A VPS is the straightforward fit for scheduled jobs, message handling, webhooks, and automations that must continue when nobody is home. It avoids the most common local interruption: a laptop closing its lid or entering sleep.

Your network is unreliable for inbound access
A hosted server normally has a stable public network path. You still need to secure the Gateway, but you avoid configuring inbound connections through a residential router or dealing with changing home IP addresses.
You want a clean, dedicated runtime
For a shared company agent, OpenClaw recommends a dedicated runtime with dedicated operating-system users and accounts. A separate VPS can keep the agent away from personal browser profiles, documents, and credentials. If users do not share a trust boundary, split gateways, hosts, or OS users rather than placing everything in one runtime.

You are comfortable with remote administration
The trade-off is operational rather than conceptual: updates, logs, backups, and recovery happen over SSH or another secure remote-access path. If you do not want to administer a Linux server, a home machine with a graphical interface may feel easier, but it does not remove the need for security maintenance.
When a home server is the better choice
Local files are a primary input
If OpenClaw must read or modify files that stay on your LAN, keeping the Gateway or a paired node at home avoids copying data to a remote host. Define which directories the agent can access and use a separate operating-system account wherever practical.
Recommended Free Tools
You need visible-browser UI automation
A local desktop is the natural fit when an automation depends on a browser window that is visible, logged in, or tied to a local display. A VPS can run headless browser tasks, but visible interaction from a remote server is a different workflow and may require additional remote-display tooling.
You can operate dedicated hardware continuously
The useful home-server question is not “Can this computer run OpenClaw once?” It is “Can it stay powered, reachable, patched, monitored, and backed up?” A dedicated desktop, Mac mini, virtual machine, or Raspberry Pi can reduce sleep-related interruptions. OpenClaw’s FAQ specifically says a VM must be always on and reachable.
You need data to remain physically onsite
Keeping the runtime at home can simplify policies that require files to remain on your own network. You remain responsible for physical access, disk failure, theft, power loss, and the security of every device connected to the host.

Resource requirements and sizing
Minimum VPS figures
OpenClaw’s official FAQ, accessed October 13, 2026, lists 1 vCPU, 1 GB of RAM, and approximately 500 MB of disk as the absolute minimum VPS configuration. These figures are a floor, not a comfortable target and not a guarantee that every tool will perform well.
Recommended headroom
The same FAQ recommends 1–2 vCPU and 2 GB or more of RAM for headroom. Browser automation and media tools can consume substantially more resources, so size for the heaviest simultaneous task rather than for an idle Gateway.
Operating-system path
Ubuntu LTS or another modern Debian/Ubuntu distribution is the best-tested Linux installation path identified in the FAQ. On a home server, use a supported, regularly updated operating system and confirm that the CPU architecture is supported by every tool you intend to run.
Why small boards need workload testing
OpenClaw documentation lists Raspberry Pi ARM self-hosting as a supported home-host path and names Raspberry Pi as a dedicated-host example. It does not certify a particular model or promise that every browser, media, or channel workload will fit on every board. Treat a Raspberry Pi as a hardware option, not as a universal specification.
Network exposure and security
Keep the Gateway private by default
The secure default in OpenClaw’s Linux hosting guidance is to keep the Gateway on loopback and access it through an SSH tunnel or Tailscale Serve. The Gateway WebSocket defaults to ws://127.0.0.1:18789. A loopback listener is reachable only from the host itself unless you deliberately create a secure tunnel.

Do not bind publicly without authentication
If you bind the Gateway to lan or tailnet, OpenClaw requires a shared token or password unless authentication is delegated to a correctly configured trusted proxy. A non-loopback bind without a valid authentication path exposes control functions to anyone who can reach that network.
Harden a public VPS before installation
- Create a non-root administrative account and use an SSH key rather than relying on a password-only login.
- Apply operating-system security updates before installing OpenClaw and keep an update schedule afterward.
- Set up Tailscale or another approved private access path if you want administration without leaving SSH broadly exposed.
- Open a second SSH session over the tailnet and verify it works before restricting public SSH. This prevents locking yourself out.
- Keep the Gateway on loopback and use an SSH tunnel or Tailscale Serve for the Control UI.
- Back up state and workspace to storage that is not the same disk as the running Gateway.
Secure a home server
- Place the machine on a network segment appropriate for the files and accounts it can reach.
- Use a dedicated OS user for the agent and avoid mixing personal browser profiles or credentials into its runtime.
- Require authentication for any LAN or tailnet binding; do not assume that “inside the house” means trusted.
- Protect the host against unattended local access, and plan for power loss, router replacement, and disk failure.
- Keep recovery copies of OpenClaw state and workspace, and test that a backup can actually be restored.
Step-by-step: a secure VPS deployment
- Choose a supported Linux image. Start with Ubuntu LTS or another modern Debian/Ubuntu distribution, then allocate at least the documented minimum. Prefer 1–2 vCPU and 2 GB or more RAM when you expect regular automation.
- Prepare administration. Create your administrator account, install your SSH key, update packages, and confirm that you can open a second session before changing firewall or SSH exposure.
- Install OpenClaw and identify the Gateway host. Keep the Gateway’s state and workspace on the VPS; do not treat a connecting laptop as the primary copy.
- Leave the listener on loopback. Confirm that the WebSocket is using
ws://127.0.0.1:18789unless you have a specific, authenticated reason to bind elsewhere. - Connect remotely. Use an SSH tunnel or Tailscale Serve for the Control UI. If you bind to a LAN or tailnet address, configure the required token, password, or trusted proxy first.
- Run a small functional test. Verify that the Gateway starts after a reboot, that the Control UI can reconnect, and that a scheduled task survives closing your local terminal.
- Add local nodes if needed. Pair a trusted Mac, iOS, Android, or headless node for local files, visible-browser work, or device-specific tools instead of moving the whole Gateway home.
- Document recovery. Record how to restore state, workspace, access keys, and node pairings on a replacement VPS.
Step-by-step: a reliable home-server deployment
- Select dedicated hardware. Use a machine that can remain powered and reachable. A VM, dedicated desktop, Mac mini, or Raspberry Pi may be suitable, but workload requirements determine whether its CPU, memory, storage, and architecture are adequate.
- Install a maintained operating system. Apply updates, enable automatic security updates where appropriate, and reserve enough storage for logs, workspace growth, and backups.
- Create a separate agent account. Keep OpenClaw’s files and credentials apart from your everyday user account. Grant only the filesystem and device permissions the automations require.
- Prevent sleep and accidental shutdown. Configure power management for continuous operation, and decide how the service should restart after a planned reboot.
- Keep the Gateway private. Bind to loopback when possible. For remote access, use SSH or Tailscale; if you intentionally expose a LAN or tailnet bind, configure authentication or a trusted proxy.
- Test local capabilities. Confirm access to the intended directories and verify that visible-browser automation works under the same user and display session used by the service.
- Plan outages. Test behavior after a router restart, power interruption, operating-system update, and browser-session expiration. Keep a backup that is independent of the host.
The hybrid VPS-plus-node design
A hybrid arrangement is useful when uptime and local access are both non-negotiable. The VPS runs the persistent Gateway, receives scheduled work, and stores the authoritative state and workspace. A local node performs tasks that depend on your home network or a visible device.
Use the VPS for central duties
- Scheduled jobs that must run while your home computer is off.
- Webhook or message handling that benefits from stable connectivity.
- Centralized state, workspace, logs, and backup routines.
- Access for multiple trusted users through a controlled runtime.
Use a node for local duties
- Reading or writing files that should not leave the LAN.
- Visible-browser UI automation on a local display.
- Device-specific tools available only on a Mac, iOS, Android, or headless local host.
The split introduces another dependency: the local node must be online and paired when a task needs it. Design automations to fail clearly when that node is unavailable rather than silently assuming local access.
Cost, maintenance, and operational trade-offs
Why no universal cost winner exists
A VPS has a recurring hosting charge, but current provider prices, regions, included storage, and transfer limits vary. A home server has hardware and electricity costs plus internet service, replacement parts, backup media, and your time. Without a location, hardware choice, usage pattern, and current provider quotes, it is not accurate to declare either option cheaper.

Common failure modes and fixes
“The Gateway disconnects whenever I close my laptop”
The laptop is probably hosting the Gateway or the process is tied to a user session. Move the Gateway to an always-on VPS or dedicated home host, then connect your laptop as a client.

“The VPS works, but it cannot see my local files”
That is expected isolation. Pair a local node for LAN files, or move only the required data through a deliberate, access-controlled synchronization workflow. Do not broadly mount your home filesystem on the public server.
“I exposed the Gateway on the LAN and cannot connect”
Check that the bind address is correct and that authentication is configured. OpenClaw requires a shared token or password for non-loopback binds unless a trusted proxy supplies authentication. Return to loopback plus SSH or Tailscale while troubleshooting.
“The Raspberry Pi runs the Gateway but browser tasks fail”
The board may meet basic Gateway needs while lacking memory, CPU capacity, display integration, or compatible packages for the browser workload. Check resource use during the failing task and move browser or media work to a stronger local node or VPS.
