A virtual dedicated server (VDS) can be a useful step beyond a shared-core virtual private server (VPS) when you need more predictable CPU and memory allocation but still want a virtual machine. It is not a universal hosting standard, though: providers use the VDS label differently, and a VDS still runs on a physical host that may serve other customers. A bare-metal dedicated server assigns the physical machine to one customer.
Choose by checking the provider’s actual resource commitments, hardware access, backup options, and migration terms—not by treating VPS, VDS, and dedicated server as automatic performance rankings.
What does “virtual dedicated server” mean?
A VDS is a virtual machine marketed with some explicitly reserved or dedicated resources. The label itself is not a universal technical standard, so the provider’s allocation terms matter more than the name.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFor example, Contabo describes its VPS products as using shared vCPU cores, while its VDS-labeled Max Performance VPS product uses exclusively allocated CPU cores and fully reserved RAM. The provider also says the physical host remains multi-tenant: CPU cores and RAM are exclusively reserved, but the host machine is still multi-tenant at the hardware level.
In other words, dedicated virtual resources do not mean a dedicated physical server. See Contabo’s Max Performance VPS documentation and its VPS documentation.

- Expanding your network setup? These 10/32 rack mount screws work with any standard networking rack, cabinet, or enclosure.
- These screws are built from high-grade steel and coated with black zinc to prevent stripping. Because nothing will ruin your day faster than stripped screws.
- Rack rash? No thanks. Pre-attached nylon washers save time and keep your rack looking nice. Just bring a Philips screwdriver and let's get to it.
- Sometimes it's hard to get the screw in the hole. That's why we added self-guiding pilot points to speed up installation and prevent curse words.
- Big project? We've got groups of 25, 50, and 100 screws to choose from. Run into an issue with your rack? We've got ECHOGEAR pros available 7 days a week to help out.
How do VPS, VDS, and bare metal differ?
| What to compare | Shared-core VPS example | VDS example | Bare-metal dedicated server example |
|---|---|---|---|
| Resource allocation | Contabo documents shared vCPU cores and fixed RAM allocation. | Contabo documents exclusively allocated CPU cores and 100% reserved RAM. Its plan table counts two vCores per physical core with SMT enabled. | Namecheap describes the resources of one physical machine as dedicated to one user. |
| Virtualization | Contabo describes its virtual servers as KVM-based. | A virtual instance; Contabo says nested virtualization is supported for listed hypervisors. | Namecheap says its dedicated web-server hosting setup has no virtualization layer. |
| Physical hardware control | Controls depend on the provider’s virtual-server offering. | Contabo says IPMI is unavailable. | Namecheap describes control over configuration and installations; remote hardware controls depend on the provider. |
| Scaling and migration | Contabo documents in-place upgrades within a VPS family, with restrictions on family conversion and IP changes when moving. | Contabo allows in-place upgrades within its VDS family. Moving from its VPS families requires a new server, manual migration, and an IP change. | Namecheap says scaling means moving to a higher-tier plan rather than adding RAM or bandwidth to the existing server. |
| Backups and management | Options vary among Contabo VPS families; confirm snapshot and backup terms for the specific plan. | Contabo says snapshots and its Auto Backup add-on are unavailable for this product. | Namecheap describes user-responsible, basic, and complete management options. |
These are examples of provider-specific offerings, not category-wide guarantees. For the details in the table, consult Contabo’s VPS documentation, Contabo’s VDS documentation, and Namecheap’s dedicated server information.
When is a VDS a sensible step up from a VPS?
Consider a VDS when you have evidence that shared CPU allocation or resource contention is affecting your workload and you want a more explicit allocation while keeping a virtual machine. Before buying, establish what the provider reserves and what it does not.

- Adjustable mounting depth for rear posts from 26” to 40”
- Slide length of 18” plus an additional 18” when slide is extended
- The TP1812 rails are rated for 90 lbs maximum load capacity
- Suitable for 1U to 4U mounted device height with universal assembly holes
- The mounted device has to be a minimum of 10” in length
- CPU: Ask whether the commitment is to physical CPU cores, virtual cores, or a share of host capacity. Check how SMT affects the provider’s core count.
- Memory: Confirm whether RAM is fully reserved and whether the guarantee applies to the entire plan.
- Storage and network: Check storage type, capacity-change rules, and any stated network limits; a CPU allocation alone does not establish overall performance.
- Virtualization: If you need to run virtual machines inside your instance, verify that nested virtualization and your intended hypervisor are supported.
- Operations: Compare backups, snapshots, hardware management, support, and downgrade options against your recovery needs.
Contabo’s product table lists Cloud VDS plans with 6, 8, 12, 16, or 24 dedicated vCores and 24, 32, 48, 64, or 96 GB of RAM, respectively. Contabo says each physical core provides two vCores with SMT enabled. These are that provider’s listed configurations, not typical VDS specifications or a performance benchmark; check the live plan details for your region and workload at Contabo’s VDS page.
When should you choose a bare-metal dedicated server instead?
Look at bare metal when your workload or operating model needs the whole physical machine, or when a required hardware-management capability is unavailable on the virtual product. Namecheap describes its dedicated servers as physical machines whose resources are assigned to one user, with no virtualization layer in its dedicated web-hosting setup. Management scope varies, so check whether the plan is user-managed, partly managed, or fully managed at Namecheap’s dedicated server page.

A VDS does not automatically provide every capability associated with physical-server control. For instance, Contabo lists IPMI as unavailable for its VDS. Whether that matters depends on whether you need remote hardware-level access and what a particular provider offers.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can you upgrade a VPS to a VDS without migrating?
It depends on the provider and product families. Contabo documents in-place upgrades within its VPS family and within its VDS family, but moving from its VPS families to its VDS-labeled Max Performance VPS requires a new server and manual data migration. The public IP changes. That is a Contabo-specific process, not a general rule for hosting providers.

- Must you copy data and reconfigure services manually?

Contabo says downgrading its VDS requires a new, smaller server and manual migration; it also says some storage changes require reinstalling with data erased. Its VDS product does not include snapshots or the Auto Backup add-on. If those features are part of your recovery plan, arrange an alternative and test that you can restore from it. What should you verify before choosing a tier?
- Define the problem. Identify whether the constraint is CPU contention, memory, storage, network capacity, hardware access, or operational control. Do not assume a more expensive or more dedicated-sounding tier will solve an unmeasured bottleneck.
- Read the allocation terms. Confirm precisely what “dedicated” or “reserved” means for CPU and RAM, and whether host hardware is still shared.
- Match the operating model. Choose a virtual machine if its isolation and flexibility meet your requirements; consider bare metal if you need the physical machine or specific capabilities the virtual offering does not provide.
- Check lifecycle and recovery details. Compare upgrade and downgrade paths, migration requirements, IP changes, backup options, snapshot availability, and storage-change procedures.
- Confirm the exact offer. Verify availability, configuration, and terms for the relevant region and workload. Product specifications can change, and one provider’s terminology does not define the market.
