NordVPN and ExpressVPN both document support for NVIDIA Shield TV, making them practical options to consider if you want to install a VPN app directly on the device. That confirms device compatibility—not which provider is faster, more private, or able to access a particular streaming catalog. Choose based on your Shield’s software, app availability in your Google Play region, and the controls you need, then test your own streaming services.
Which VPNs work on NVIDIA Shield TV?
Both NordVPN and ExpressVPN publish setup instructions that explicitly include NVIDIA Shield. NordVPN describes its Android TV app and installation through Google Play; ExpressVPN’s Android TV setup guide lists Shield as a supported device. These are documented compatibility options, not an exhaustive or independently ranked list of VPNs.

The cited setup pages do not provide comparable Shield speed tests or current, region-by-region results for streaming services. They therefore cannot establish a speed winner or guarantee that a service such as Netflix will work through either VPN.
How to choose a VPN for a remote-controlled TV
On a TV, practical app details matter: you have a remote rather than a keyboard, and you may need the VPN to coexist with streaming apps and devices on your home network. Compare these points before subscribing:

- Shield support and availability: Look for current instructions for your device and Android TV version, and check whether the app appears in Google Play for your region.
- Login and setup: Check how account sign-in works from a TV screen. NordVPN documents QR-code or numeric remote validation as login options.
- Connection controls: Decide whether you need auto-connect, protocol selection, or split tunneling. NordVPN documents these controls in its Android TV app guide.
- Local-device access: If you use devices on your home network while the VPN is on, check whether the app offers a local-network discovery setting. NordVPN documents such an option.
- Privacy and terms: Read each provider’s current privacy policy and subscription terms directly. The setup documentation cited here does not establish that one provider is more private or safer than the other.
How to install and connect NordVPN on Shield
NordVPN’s documented setup uses its Android TV app. App screens and sign-in requirements can change, so follow the provider’s live guide if the labels on your Shield differ.
- On Shield, open Google Play and search for NordVPN, or follow the provider’s installation instructions.
- Install and open the app, then sign in. The provider describes QR-code or numeric validation as options for completing account login on a TV.
- When Android asks to approve the VPN connection, review and accept the prompt to let the app establish a VPN connection.
- Choose Quick Connect or select a country in the app, then open the streaming app or other service you intend to use.
Start with the app’s default settings. If a specific problem arises, change one relevant setting at a time and test again rather than adjusting several options at once.
What to know about NordVPN’s TV app settings
NordVPN’s Android TV documentation describes auto-connect, split tunneling, protocol selection, custom DNS, and local-network discovery. Availability and exact controls may depend on the current app version; consult the provider’s app instructions for current steps.

Leave DNS at its default unless you have a specific reason to change it. NordVPN says custom DNS overrides its DNS and warns that this can cause streaming-service issues. If playback or app access stops working after a DNS change, restore the default and test again.
Installing ExpressVPN on NVIDIA Shield
ExpressVPN’s Android TV setup guide explicitly lists NVIDIA Shield and states that its instructions apply to Android 7.0 or later. Follow the current ExpressVPN Android TV setup steps for installation and app controls; the guide was last updated September 22, 2026. Check your device’s software and the app’s regional availability rather than assuming the instructions apply unchanged to every Shield configuration.

A VPN can affect a connection, but the cited provider setup pages do not report comparable speed measurements on Shield. There is no evidence here to quantify the slowdown or say which provider performs better. The result for your setup may depend on your network, chosen VPN location, provider service, and streaming app.

Test the service and location you actually plan to use. If playback is poor, compare the same stream with the VPN off and on, and try a different VPN location. Treat that as a check of your own connection, not proof of general provider performance.
Does a VPN guarantee access to a streaming catalog?
No. A Shield-compatible VPN app only establishes that you can install and use the VPN on the device. It does not guarantee that a streaming service will allow VPN traffic or show a particular catalog from your location. Services and VPN features can change, so verify access with the apps, countries, and accounts you use.
Do you need extra hardware to use a VPN on Shield?
The documented route is to install a VPN app on Shield; the evidence does not establish a separate physical purchase as necessary.
