If you need an Icelandic IP address while abroad, choose a VPN that currently offers Iceland as an exit location—but check the provider’s app and the destination service’s rules before relying on access. CyberNews’s shortlist names NordVPN, Surfshark, IPVanish, ExpressVPN, and CyberGhost; it is that publisher’s editorial ranking, not a head-to-head test established here.
Five VPNs on CyberNews’s Iceland shortlist
CyberNews says its recommendations consider privacy and security, streaming, performance, and other factors. The available evidence does not establish a common, reproducible test across these providers, so treat the list as a starting point rather than proof that one is fastest, safest, or best for every use.
| Provider | Why it appears on the list | Iceland-specific evidence and limits |
|---|---|---|
| NordVPN | CyberNews’s overall Iceland recommendation | NordVPN’s location list includes Iceland with one city. That confirms a listed location, not speed or streaming access. |
| IPVanish | CyberNews highlights it for security | It appears on the list, but its Iceland location and security claims were not independently validated in the evidence available here. |
| ExpressVPN | CyberNews describes it as a fast premium option | ExpressVPN says it has physical servers in Reykjavik and an Iceland IP location. These are provider statements, not independent performance findings. |
| CyberGhost | CyberNews highlights its Iceland servers | It appears on the list, but its current Iceland server configuration was not independently verified. |
CyberNews also includes Surfshark on its shortlist, describing it as a wallet-friendly option for multiple devices. Current device limits and prices were not verified here. Because Surfshark is a paid-client brand, it is not named or linked in this article.

A separate SafetyDetectives list names ExpressVPN, Private Internet Access, CyberGhost, NordVPN, and Surfshark. SafetyDetectives discloses common ownership involving ExpressVPN’s parent company and several VPNs in its list, so that ranking should be read with the disclosure in view. It does not resolve the lack of a shared, reproducible comparison.

First decide which location you need
An Icelandic IP address while abroad
Choose Iceland in the VPN app when you want websites to see an Icelandic VPN exit location. NordVPN lists Iceland as one city, and ExpressVPN says it operates physical servers in Reykjavik. Server inventories can change; confirm the location in the provider’s current app or support documentation before subscribing for this feature.
After connecting, check the apparent IP location and try the specific service you need. A VPN changes the route and apparent IP location; it cannot guarantee that a streaming service, bank, or other site will accept the connection. The service’s licensing, account, and anti-fraud rules still apply. ExpressVPN describes Iceland servers as a way to access familiar Icelandic services while traveling, but that is a possible use case, not a promise of access.

A privacy route through Iceland
Iceland can also be part of a VPN’s routing design without being the final exit location. Proton VPN says its Secure Core servers are in Iceland, Switzerland, and Sweden; traffic passes through a Secure Core server before reaching the exit server you select. This describes the route, not a recommendation to use Iceland as the exit for every activity.
How to compare providers for your use
- Verify the Iceland location. Check whether it is currently offered and whether the provider identifies it as a physical or virtual location. Do not infer performance from a server-location list.
- Match the exit to the task. For an Icelandic IP abroad, select Iceland. For another country’s services, select the relevant exit location instead.
- Examine privacy evidence. Read the logging policy and look for independent audits or other verifiable evidence. A no-logs statement is the provider’s claim unless independently verified.
- Check device and protocol support. Confirm that the apps, protocols, and connection controls work on the devices you use, including any work or travel equipment.
- Test the actual service. Streaming, banking, and workplace services may block or restrict VPN connections; no provider listing guarantees acceptance.
- Review the full plan terms. Check total cost, renewal price, refund conditions, and supported devices on the provider’s current plan page. Comparable current prices and terms are not established here.
What Proton VPN says about its privacy policy
Proton VPN states: “Proton VPN implements a strict no-logs policy, meaning we do not record your browsing history, session lengths, IP address, or any other identifying information.” This is Proton’s description of its own policy, not an independent finding. Its no-logs policy page provides the provider’s account of what it says it does not record.
