There is no evidence-backed list of five VPNs that can be called the “best” for Hotstar outside India in 2026. The India service, now commonly called JioHotstar, limits access by region and actively warns that VPN, proxy and unblocker connections may be rejected. The available evidence supports only a cautious comparison of three providers: Proton VPN publishes JioHotstar-specific guidance, ExpressVPN describes virtual Indian locations but also prohibits bypassing provider-imposed geographic restrictions in its terms, and NordVPN says it shut down its Indian servers in response to Indian regulatory requirements. None of those sources independently proves reliable access for every country, account, device or date.
Use this guide to understand what is established, what remains unverified and how to test access without treating a provider’s marketing claim as a guarantee.
The short answer: do not treat “5 best” as a verified ranking
The strongest conclusion available is a limitation, not a leaderboard. A Hotstar FAQ says the India membership is available only in India and that geographical restrictions apply when streaming outside India. A more recent JioHotstar proxy warning tells users detected behind a VPN, proxy or unblocker to disable it. In practical terms, an Indian-looking IP address can still be identified and refused.

This means a paid subscription should be considered a conditional experiment, not a promise of access. If uninterrupted viewing is essential, keep a legitimate service available in your location rather than relying on a VPN workaround.

What Hotstar and JioHotstar notices actually tell you
The India membership is geographically limited
The Hotstar India FAQ answers “Is this service available outside India?” with: “This membership is only available in India.” It also states, “Geographical restrictions apply for streaming content outside India.” That FAQ was crawled about 6.5 years ago, so it should not be treated as a complete statement of today’s commercial terms. It is still useful evidence that regional licensing is fundamental to the India service.
Availability can also vary by title. A subscription that is valid in India does not create worldwide rights for every program; individual titles may have separate licensing territories.
JioHotstar can identify VPN or proxy traffic
The official JioHotstar proxy page displays this warning: “Looks like you are connecting through a VPN, proxy or ‘unblocker’ service.Please turn off any of these services and try again.” The missing space in “service.Please” appears in the quoted warning. The important point is operational: an endpoint that geolocates to India is not automatically accepted as a normal residential connection.
The proxy warning was reported as crawled about 1.3 years ago. Check the live service message and current help pages before subscribing, because detection methods and account rules can change.

What the three documented providers claim—and what that means
Proton VPN: the only provider with JioHotstar-specific guidance in the material
Proton publishes a page specifically about JioHotstar and says that connecting to an Indian server can give you an Indian IP location expected by the service. That is a provider statement, not an independent test. It does not establish that every Indian endpoint is accepted, that the result is the same from every country, or that the connection works on every supported device.
Proton also says its VPN is not intended for copyright circumvention. Its guidance asks readers to consult the Proton VPN Terms and Conditions of Service and the streaming service’s terms. Treat that language as a use-policy warning rather than a universal legal conclusion about VPNs.
ExpressVPN: virtual Indian locations and a direct terms conflict
ExpressVPN’s India streaming page describes its India locations as virtual. The physical machines are outside India, while the service assigns an Indian IP address. A virtual location can be technically different from a server physically located in India: routing, latency, infrastructure and detection characteristics may differ.
The source does not show that those virtual locations currently pass JioHotstar checks. More importantly, ExpressVPN’s support page, last updated July 24, 2026, says: “Use of the service to access, stream, or download content in violation of copyright laws, to circumvent geographic restrictions imposed by content providers, or to engage in any unlawful activity is strictly prohibited and constitutes a breach of our Terms of Service.” Anyone considering the service for this purpose must read the current terms and decide whether the intended use is allowed.

NordVPN: Indian physical servers were shut down
NordVPN’s support material says the company shut down its Indian servers in response to CERT-In rules. That establishes the status of the cited physical-server network at the time of the support statement. It does not answer whether a virtual India endpoint is now offered, whether that endpoint is suitable for JioHotstar, or whether the service accepts it. Do not infer current compatibility from an old server list or from the provider’s presence in other countries.
How to evaluate a VPN for JioHotstar without a misleading ranking
If you compare providers yourself, use the same evidence standard for each one. A provider should not receive a “best” label merely because it has an India button in its app.

Speed, privacy, server counts and “success rate” should not be compared unless they were measured under the same conditions. No such comparable measurements are established here.

A cautious way to test before committing to a long subscription
- Confirm the live service rule. Open JioHotstar’s current help or proxy page from your location. Record whether it says the India membership is unavailable abroad or instructs VPN users to disconnect. The historical FAQ is not a substitute for the current terms.
- Read both sets of terms. Check the VPN provider’s acceptable-use language and JioHotstar’s account and geographic rules. ExpressVPN’s July 24, 2026 wording expressly prohibits circumventing provider-imposed geographic restrictions; Proton also warns that its service is not intended for copyright circumvention.
- Verify the endpoint type. If the provider offers India, find out whether the location is physical or virtual. A virtual location assigns an Indian IP while the underlying hardware is elsewhere, as ExpressVPN describes.
- Use a short commitment. If you proceed, avoid assuming that an annual plan is safer. Check the exact renewal price, cancellation route and refund conditions displayed for your billing country. No universal price or refund term is established by the available evidence.
- Install only the official app. Use the provider’s current application for your operating system or documented router method. Keep automatic updates enabled because endpoint lists and detection handling can change.
- Test one endpoint at a time. Connect to an Indian location, then open JioHotstar in a fresh browser session or restart the app. Record the date, endpoint label, device and exact error. Do not treat one successful page load as proof that every title will play.
- Stop if the service rejects the connection. Repeatedly cycling endpoints can trigger additional account checks and still may not solve the underlying block. If the proxy warning persists, use content licensed in your region or contact the service’s support team.
Troubleshooting when JioHotstar displays a VPN or proxy warning
Check whether the problem is the endpoint, not your account
Disconnect the VPN and load the service normally from your location. If the service works without the VPN but shows the proxy warning immediately after connecting, the endpoint is being classified as VPN or proxy traffic. Changing browsers will not change that classification.

Check for location leaks and conflicting connections
- Close other VPN, proxy, DNS-filtering or corporate security applications before testing.
- Disable a second VPN profile on the phone, computer or router; two tunnels can produce inconsistent routing.
- On a browser, start a private session or clear site data so an old login or location cookie is not reused. This can fix stale session data, but it cannot make a blocked IP acceptable.
- If you use a router tunnel, compare it with the provider’s official app. The router may route only some devices or may expose a different DNS path.
Check the device path
Streaming from a phone or computer through the provider’s app is a different test from casting to a television. A Chromecast-style cast may hand the stream request to the receiving device, which can use a different network path. Test playback directly on the target device before assuming casting will inherit the VPN connection.
Interpret persistent failure correctly
If multiple Indian endpoints produce the same proxy notice, the most defensible conclusion is that JioHotstar is rejecting the VPN network or that the account and location do not satisfy its rules. It is not evidence that buying a more expensive plan will solve the issue. Ask the provider whether the endpoint is currently supported, but treat any answer as a claim until independently verified.
Device and platform considerations
The historical Hotstar FAQ lists desktop web, Android, iOS, Fire TV, Android TV, Apple TV and Chromecast among device classes. That list describes service access, not VPN compatibility. The available material does not establish that Proton, ExpressVPN or NordVPN supports every one of those platforms for JioHotstar, nor that a TV app and a router setup behave identically.

Terms, copyright and account consequences
A VPN’s technical ability to assign an Indian IP is separate from permission to use that connection for a geographically restricted stream. Proton’s guidance says the service is not intended for copyright circumvention. ExpressVPN’s current support wording says bypassing geographic restrictions imposed by content providers breaches its terms. Those are provider policies; they are not a single worldwide legal rule. Laws and contractual terms differ by country and can change.

Possible outcomes of violating a service’s rules include a blocked stream, a sign-in challenge, account suspension or loss of a subscription benefit. The available sources do not quantify how often those outcomes occur. Review the live JioHotstar and VPN terms for your jurisdiction, and do not share credentials or use an account in ways its owner has not authorized.
Why a five-provider ranking would be premature
A credible “five best” article needs five comparable, dated tests. Each test should identify the tester’s country, account status, exact Indian endpoint, device, app version, title attempted and result. It should also disclose whether the endpoint was physical or virtual, how many attempts were made, and what happened after a failure. None of that complete evidence is available for five providers here.
Provider documentation remains useful for finding candidates, but it cannot substitute for independent verification. A marketing page can accurately describe an Indian IP feature while JioHotStar simultaneously blocks the associated address range. A support page can describe a past server shutdown without proving what virtual locations exist today. Keeping those distinctions visible is more useful than assigning unsupported stars or percentages.

- You want the clearest provider-specific starting point: Proton VPN is the only documented option here with a page dedicated to JioHotstar. Treat its Indian-location statement as a claim to test, not a guarantee.
- You are considering a virtual Indian location: ExpressVPN explains that its India locations are virtual. Read its current terms first, because its support policy expressly prohibits circumventing provider geographic restrictions.
- You saw an old recommendation for NordVPN: NordVPN’s cited support says its Indian servers were shut down. Verify whether a current virtual alternative exists before paying; the available evidence does not answer that question.
- You need dependable access for work, travel or a household: Do not build the plan around a VPN bypass. Use a service and catalog licensed for your present location, with the VPN reserved for uses allowed by its terms.
- You are choosing among other providers: Require the five checks in the comparison table and a dated playback test. Without them, “works with Hotstar” is an unverified assertion.
Bottom line
JioHotstar’s regional licensing and explicit VPN/proxy warning make access from outside India uncertain even when a VPN offers an Indian IP. Proton provides the most directly relevant guidance but no independent guarantee; ExpressVPN documents virtual India locations while prohibiting circumvention in its terms; NordVPN’s cited support says its Indian servers were shut down. Until five providers have been tested under the same documented conditions, an honest 2026 guide should explain these limits rather than publish a fabricated “best five” ranking.
