There is not enough verified evidence to name five current VPNs as the best for Deluge or to rank them in a Deluge-specific test. The useful shortlist starts with a provider that permits peer-to-peer (P2P) traffic on your plan and supports the operating system running Deluge. Then check its kill switch, privacy evidence and port-forwarding rules—and make sure Deluge uses the VPN connection rather than your ordinary internet interface.
What matters when choosing a VPN for Deluge
Deluge is a BitTorrent client, so the relevant question is not whether a VPN advertises general privacy features; it is whether its current policy and settings suit P2P traffic on your platform. Confirm each item for the specific provider, plan, server and operating system you intend to use.
- P2P permission: Check whether torrent traffic is allowed and whether it is restricted to particular servers or paid plans.
- Operating-system support: Verify that the VPN app supports the system on which Deluge runs. Generic VPN support does not establish Deluge-specific compatibility.
- Leak protection: A kill switch can block internet traffic if the VPN connection drops. If Deluge supports selecting a network interface, binding it to the VPN interface can add protection; choosing the regular internet interface instead can expose your real IP.
- Port forwarding: Forwarding can make incoming peer connections possible and may improve reachability, but it is not necessary for every torrent. Check whether the feature is available on your plan and server, whether the assigned port changes, and how to enter it in Deluge.
- Privacy evidence: Look for verifiable information such as published audits, and distinguish that evidence from a provider’s own marketing statements.
- Speed methodology: Treat speed rankings as specific to the reviewer’s test method and date, not a guarantee of your results with Deluge, your ISP or a particular torrent.
What the available comparisons say—and do not say
Two recent reviews disagree on their top torrenting VPN, which shows why a universal winner is not established. RTINGS’ review, updated July 21, 2026, names Windscribe its best-tested torrenting VPN. It praises the service’s privacy and kill-switch features, says it supports port forwarding, and says its free plan does not support torrenting. RTINGS describes Mullvad as an alternative but says it does not support port forwarding, a possible drawback for older or poorly seeded torrents. These are RTINGS’ review findings, not a Deluge-specific head-to-head test. Read RTINGS’ torrenting VPN comparison.

Its review reports P2P support, a kill switch and port forwarding, with forwarding unavailable on US servers and a randomly assigned port. Those rankings and feature details belong to Top10VPN’s review and may change; they do not establish how the service performs with Deluge on your system. Read Top10VPN’s torrenting VPN comparison.

Because the reviewers use their own criteria and methods, their rankings are not interchangeable with an independent Deluge test. Neither comparison, as reviewed here, supports filling five ranked slots with verified current provider policies. Use the reviews as leads, then verify current P2P rules, supported platforms and port-forwarding restrictions directly with each provider before subscribing.
Proton VPN: verified P2P guidance, but no Deluge-specific setup
Proton’s own torrenting page describes P2P servers, a kill switch, split tunneling and port forwarding. It says its free plan does not provide dedicated P2P servers for torrent downloads and uploads, so do not assume the free tier is suitable for this use. These are provider statements, not independent performance results. See Proton VPN’s P2P information.

Proton’s support article says P2P servers are available on paid plans and lists Windows, macOS, Android and Linux. It explains that other peers see the VPN server’s IP and gives generic guidance for binding a supported torrent client to the VPN interface. Its example is qBittorrent, not Deluge. The article warns that selecting the normal internet connection instead of the VPN interface can reveal a real IP even when the kill switch is enabled. It does not establish Deluge menu names or a Deluge-specific configuration procedure. Read Proton’s P2P support guidance.

How to reduce the chance of an IP leak
- Choose a plan and server that allow P2P. Check the provider’s current policy for your plan and region before starting a torrent.
- Connect the VPN before opening or using Deluge. Enable the VPN app’s kill switch if available, and understand what it blocks when the tunnel disconnects.
- Check Deluge’s network-interface options. If your Deluge version supports binding to a network interface, select the VPN interface—not the ordinary internet connection. Do not copy interface names or menu paths from instructions for another client; confirm the current Deluge documentation for your version and operating system.
- Test the failure case safely. With no active transfer, disconnect the VPN and check that the kill switch or client binding stops Deluge’s network traffic. Reconnect the VPN before resuming. A working kill switch alone does not prove that Deluge is bound to the intended interface.
- Recheck after changes. VPN reconnections, app updates, server changes or network changes can alter the interface or assigned port. Confirm the settings again before transferring.
Should you enable port forwarding?
Consider it when incoming peer reachability matters and your chosen provider supports forwarding on the server and plan you use. It is optional for many torrents, and availability does not promise a speed increase. If the provider assigns a new port after reconnection, update Deluge’s configured incoming port to match. Follow the provider’s current instructions for your client rather than guessing a Deluge setting from another app’s guide.

BitTorrent is a file-sharing protocol; using it does not make every shared file lawful. Copyright rules vary by jurisdiction, and downloading or sharing copyrighted material without permission may lead to civil claims. A VPN does not grant permission to distribute or download a work. RTINGS discusses this distinction in its overview of torrenting and copyright. Use Deluge for material you are allowed to share and check the law that applies where you are.
