To use a personal VPN, install your provider’s official app, sign in, approve the VPN connection request, and tap Connect or Quick Connect. The app usually chooses the server and connection protocol for you. Check the app’s status—or your device’s VPN indicator—to confirm it is connected.
Set up a personal VPN with its app
- Check which device you want to protect. Choose a VPN service with an official app for that device. For a work or school device, follow your administrator’s instructions instead of setting up a personal service.
- Install the official app. Get it from the provider’s official website or the device’s official app store. Create an account if you do not already have one.
- Sign in and approve the connection. Open the app, sign in, and allow the operating system to add or configure a VPN connection if prompted.
- Connect. Tap Connect, Quick Connect, or the app’s equivalent. Names and layouts vary by provider. For most routine use, the app selects a server and protocol automatically. A provider’s setup guide illustrates this general workflow.
- Check the connection status. Look for a connected message in the app or a VPN indicator on the device. Platform-specific checks are below.
How do I know my VPN is connected?
Use the app’s status first. You can also check the operating system: Android shows a VPN indicator when connected, and Windows VPN settings show Connected for an active profile. These indicators confirm that the device reports a VPN connection; they do not promise anonymity or protection from malware, phishing, tracking, or identification through an account you use.
Connect on Android
For an installed VPN app, open the app and connect there; Android may open the app when you select its VPN entry. To view the system’s VPN page, go to Settings → Network & internet → VPN, select the VPN, enter a username and password if requested, and tap Connect. A VPN indicator appears when connected. Menu names can differ by Android version or device manufacturer, so search Settings for “VPN” if you cannot find the page. Google’s Android instructions cover the system connection steps.

Connect on Windows 11
A provider’s Windows app is generally the simplest option: install it, sign in, and connect from the app. Windows also supports a built-in VPN profile if your provider or workplace administrator gives you the required details.

- Open Settings → Network & internet → VPN → Add VPN.
- Enter the server address, connection type, and sign-in information supplied by your provider or administrator.
- Save the profile, select it in VPN settings, and connect. Windows displays Connected when the profile is active.
Do not guess the server address or connection type; get the exact values from whoever manages the VPN. Microsoft’s Windows VPN instructions describe both app and built-in-profile options. Microsoft says Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, so these directions are for Windows 11 rather than a currently supported Windows 10 installation.
Connect on Apple devices
Apple says VPN services typically require minimal setup on iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Vision Pro, and Apple Watch. In practice, install or configure a VPN service using its supported app or setup instructions, then connect through the app or the configuration provided. Apple also documents managed options such as Always On VPN and per-app VPN; these are organization-managed features, not steps most personal users need to configure. Should I change the VPN protocol?
Usually, no. Leave protocol selection at the provider’s automatic or default setting unless you have a connection problem or a specific reason to change it. Protocol choices and availability vary across providers and devices. For example, Proton VPN recommends Smart Protocol in supported apps; that is its own product guidance, not a universal ranking of protocols. If a connection fails, first try another server location or follow your provider’s troubleshooting instructions. Proton VPN’s protocol guide explains its settings and platform availability.

A kill switch is intended to block internet access if the VPN connection drops, preventing traffic from continuing over the ordinary connection until the VPN reconnects or the block is lifted. It can also interrupt internet access, and its behavior varies by provider and operating system. Enable it if that trade-off suits your needs and the feature is available; check the provider’s platform-specific documentation rather than assuming every app handles every request identically. For example, Proton VPN documents some Apple-service DNS requests that can bypass its VPN even when its kill switch is enabled. That is a provider-specific limitation, not a universal description of all VPNs.

Use a VPN on a TV or other device without an app
Some smart TVs and other devices do not offer a native VPN app. One optional workaround is a VPN-compatible router: configure the VPN connection on the router, connect the TV to that router’s network, and check that the connection works. The router must support VPN client connections and be configured correctly; an ordinary router will not necessarily do so. Consult your VPN provider and router manufacturer for compatible models and setup instructions. A router is not required when the device supports a VPN app. NordVPN’s setup guide describes this general workaround.

A personal VPN app is meant for an individual account and is normally set up by installing the provider’s app and signing in. A workplace or school VPN may require a specific profile, server address, credentials, or managed settings. Ask the organization’s administrator for those details and instructions; do not substitute a personal VPN service for an organization’s required connection.
