A DNS test showing your internet service provider (ISP) or an unfamiliar server while your VPN is connected is a signal to investigate—not proof of a leak. First identify who operates the resolver. Your DNS request may be bypassing the VPN, or it may be traveling through the VPN to a third-party DNS service.

What a wrong-looking DNS result can mean

A VPN’s connected indicator does not prove that every DNS lookup uses the VPN provider’s resolver. A lookup can leave the VPN tunnel and reach your usual ISP resolver, or it can travel through the tunnel to a resolver run by another organization. In either case, the resolver operator may receive your DNS queries; only the first case necessarily indicates DNS bypass around the VPN.

An unfamiliar company name is not enough to distinguish these situations. VPN providers may use outside infrastructure, so a resolver can belong to a partner rather than the VPN brand. Compare the resolver’s operator with both your ISP and your VPN provider before drawing a conclusion. Proton VPN explains that third-party infrastructure may operate DNS endpoints; ExpressVPN describes the difference between DNS bypass and third-party DNS reached through a VPN.

How to check the result

  1. Test while connected. Run a standard or extended DNS leak test with the VPN on. Record the public IP address and every DNS resolver displayed. A resolver list is more useful than a single “leak” label.
  2. Compare the public IP. Check whether it matches the VPN exit location rather than your normal connection. If possible, use a VPN exit in a different country; that can make an ISP-owned resolver easier to recognize.
  3. Identify each resolver operator. Look up the resolver organization and compare it with your actual ISP and VPN provider. A resolver operated by neither may still be the VPN’s infrastructure partner. Do not treat a different brand name alone as proof of bypass.
  4. Retest after any change. Change one setting at a time, reconnect the VPN, and run the same test again. Do not assume a setting fixed the issue until your own result changes.

Settings that can change which DNS server you see

Custom DNS on the operating system

Manually configured DNS on an active IPv4 or IPv6 network interface can affect which resolver handles requests. Check both protocols. Proton VPN’s platform guidance recommends automatic DNS for its app on Windows, macOS, Linux, and ChromeOS; use the equivalent instructions for your own VPN rather than applying another provider’s steps blindly. Proton VPN’s DNS-leak guide covers platform-specific checks.

Browser Secure DNS and encrypted DNS on the device

Browser Secure DNS, commonly implemented as DNS over HTTPS (DoH), and device-wide encrypted DNS such as Android Private DNS can direct requests to a selected resolver. DoH and DNS over TLS (DoT) encrypt the connection between your device and that resolver; encryption does not establish that the resolver is operated by your VPN or that requests follow the VPN’s intended DNS policy. Third-party encrypted DNS can also complicate a VPN app’s DNS rerouting.

If you deliberately configured encrypted DNS, the test may be showing the service you selected. Check your VPN provider’s compatibility instructions before changing or disabling it; turning encrypted DNS off is not universally necessary. DNSLeakTest Community explains how browser Secure DNS and operating-system DNS configuration can affect results.

Antivirus and web-filtering features

Some antivirus or online-security products filter DNS or web traffic and can interfere with a VPN’s DNS settings. Check their DNS, web-protection, or browser-extension features, then retest after each change. ExpressVPN’s Windows guidance also calls out automatic DNS, kill-switch settings, and split tunneling; its Mac guidance covers antivirus and web-filtering interference. These are provider-specific troubleshooting directions, not universal menu paths: Windows guidance and Mac guidance.

Tunnel interruptions and kill switches

If the VPN connection drops, DNS requests may fall back to the system’s default resolver. A kill switch is a relevant safeguard because it can block traffic during a disconnection, but its behavior and settings vary by provider and app. Follow your VPN provider’s instructions and verify the result with a connected test.

What to do if your ISP resolver still appears

  1. Confirm that you are testing with the VPN connected and note the test’s public IP and all resolver names.
  2. Review custom DNS settings on active IPv4 and IPv6 interfaces, plus browser Secure DNS and device encrypted DNS. Change these only in line with your VPN provider’s guidance.
  3. Inspect antivirus and security-software DNS or web filtering, as well as any VPN split-tunneling or kill-switch settings relevant to your app.
  4. Reconnect the VPN and repeat the test. If the real ISP resolver remains visible, contact your VPN provider’s support team with your operating system, VPN app version, browser, resolver names, and test result.

Because the result depends on your operating system, VPN app, browser, and DNS configuration, there is no single setting that can be prescribed from the resolver name alone. Provider instructions are specific to their software and can change as apps are updated.

What leak studies can—and cannot—tell you

A 2022 VPNalyzer study reported DNS-only leaks during tunnel failure for eight providers. The researchers described that count as a conservative lower bound because they included only definitive leaks. The paper also measured 54 VPN providers whose resolvers had DNSSEC validation enabled and 26 whose resolvers supported query name minimization. These are findings from the study, not current ratings of particular services and not evidence about your own connection. Read the VPNalyzer paper.
