I built Trainlog to make one small part of training easier to capture: how a workout felt. Instead of navigating a form and typing on a phone after exercise, a user can speak a reflection, review its transcript, and confirm a structured journal entry. The design is intentionally modest: voice capture, editable text, validated AI output, and a history to revisit—not a medical tool, workout generator, calorie tracker, or wearable platform.

What is voice journaling?

Voice journaling means speaking a journal entry that is recorded and transcribed into text you can keep, search, and revisit. For Trainlog, the point is not to replace workout data. It is to capture subjective details that numbers alone do not express: what felt good, what was difficult, or what stood out during a session.

A brief post-run reflection might mention that a route felt harder than expected or that a particular stretch was enjoyable. That is an illustration, not a prescribed entry length or a medical assessment. The goal is to preserve the user’s own account in a form that can become part of a longer history.

Why I chose voice for Trainlog

The problem I wanted to address was the friction of recording a personal reflection through a conventional form after exercise. A spoken note can be a more direct way to get the thought down than tapping through fields and typing on a small screen. That is a design rationale, not evidence that voice input improves adherence or works better for every athlete.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Trainlog takes the recording, transcribes it, and extracts structured insights for a journal entry. The project describes a calendar and activity filtering, summaries of weekly patterns, learning content, monthly reports, and AI coaching as ways to return to that history. Those features make the reflection useful beyond the moment of capture, while keeping the user’s experience—not just numerical workout metrics—at the center.

How a voice note becomes a journal entry

1. Record in the browser

The web app uses the browser’s MediaRecorder API to capture a voice note. I chose a web app with a progressive web app approach rather than maintaining separate native codebases. That kept the capture experience within one application architecture for this project’s needs.

2. Transcribe the audio

The recorded audio is sent to a Vercel serverless function and transcribed with Groq Whisper. The transcript is shown to the user before analysis. In the project’s described data handling, audio is processed for transcription rather than kept as an audio file.

3. Review and correct the transcript

The transcript is editable before an AI model analyzes it. That step matters because a transcription error can change the meaning of a reflection. Gym noise or heavy breathing may confuse speech recognition; missing a word such as “not” could reverse what the user meant. The user, not the model, gets the chance to correct the record first.

  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.

4. Validate, review, and save

The model is prompted to produce structured data, and the server checks that output against a Zod schema. The project describes a review-and-confirm step before the entry is saved in Cloud Firestore. Schema validation helps ensure the response has the expected shape; it does not guarantee that every interpretation is correct, which is why human review remains part of the flow.

Why I kept the architecture small

My rule for this project was to add infrastructure only when a concrete need justified it. The repository describes a stack of React 19 and TypeScript, browser MediaRecorder, Groq Whisper and Groq models for analysis and coaching, Firebase Authentication, Cloud Firestore, Vercel serverless functions, and a Vite PWA. Those are the project’s stated technologies; implementations and versions can change.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
  • Calendar and activity filtering instead of vector search: I used native calendar and filtering capabilities for browsing journal history rather than introducing a vector database.
  • Recent history in the coaching prompt instead of a separate memory layer: the AI coach receives recent Firestore history as context. I did not build another memory system for this use case.
  • A web app/PWA instead of separate native apps: this kept the product in a single web-oriented implementation rather than creating distinct iOS and Android codebases.

These are choices for Trainlog, not rules that vector search, dedicated memory, or native apps are inherently unnecessary. A product with different search needs, scale, device requirements, or offline behavior might justify a different design. The useful question is whether a component solves a real requirement now, rather than whether it sounds advanced.

What voice capture does not solve

Voice input removes some typing, but it does not remove ambiguity, noise, or the need to check the result. Transcription quality can vary with background noise, microphone quality, pronunciation, and language. Those factors are described in documentation for voice transcription generally, but they do not establish Trainlog’s performance across languages or environments.

Nor does turning a reflection into structured fields make it an objective measurement. The entry is still the user’s account of a workout. Trainlog is presented as a reflection and learning companion, not a medical or diagnostic application, a replacement for a clinician or coach, a workout generator, a calorie tracker, or a wearable integration platform.

Privacy and data handling need precise claims

For a voice journal, it is important to distinguish the audio recording from the transcript and the saved journal entry. The project says recordings are processed for transcription and are not stored as audio files; transcript text is then sent for AI analysis, and confirmed entries are stored in Firestore. The project also describes per-user data isolation, scrubbing possible phone numbers, email addresses, or IDs before transcript text is sent to the language model, and account and data deletion.

These are implementation statements published by the author and project, not the findings of an independent security audit. They should not be read as a guarantee that no sensitive information can ever appear in a transcript or that every system configuration has been independently verified. Readers evaluating any voice journal should check separately what happens to raw audio, transcript text, AI requests, stored entries, and deleted accounts.

The lesson I took from building it

For Trainlog, voice was a practical way to capture subjective reflections, while the editable transcript preserved user control. Structured AI output made entries easier to organize, but validation and confirmation kept the model from being treated as an unquestioned source of truth. And a small architecture was enough for the product’s current needs without adding separate search or memory infrastructure.

As I put it: “Start with the smallest stack that solves the problem.” That is an engineering judgment about this project, not a claim that the smallest possible stack is always the right one.
