If you want to dictate instead of typing, you need speech-recognition software as well as a microphone. A microphone captures your voice; the software turns it into text and sends that text to the field or document you’re using. A dedicated dictation microphone is optional—many voice-input tools can use a computer’s built-in mic or a compatible headset.
What can you use to dictate instead of typing?
There are two practical routes: use a voice-input keyboard or dictation app, or pair professional dictation hardware with compatible recognition software. The right choice depends on your device, where you want the words inserted, whether you need offline processing, and whether you want a dedicated microphone.
| Option | Where dictated text goes | Audio input | Processing described by provider |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dictate Keyboard | Into app text fields through its Android keyboard | Device microphone or a compatible external microphone | Project describes cloud-provider and downloadable on-device routes |
| Talkpad | At the active cursor using a hotkey | Microphone selected by the operating system; Talkpad says its Mac app can use Bluetooth headsets | Talkpad describes cloud transcription |
| Philips SpeechMike Premium Air SMP4000 | Depends on the connected recognition software | Dedicated wireless dictation microphone | Requires compatible speech-recognition software; the microphone itself is not a transcription service |
The software descriptions above come from the respective project or product materials, not a controlled comparison. They do not establish which option is most accurate or fastest for your voice, environment, or vocabulary.

Choose software before buying a microphone
Start by checking whether the software runs on your device and inserts text where you need it. An Android voice keyboard is suited to dictation into mobile app fields. A desktop dictation tool may be more convenient when you want text to appear at the current cursor without switching keyboards. If you already use specialist recognition software, confirm its supported microphones and operating systems before purchasing dedicated hardware.

Android: Dictate Keyboard
The Dictate Keyboard project describes an Android keyboard that supports live speech transcription and text entry in apps. It documents cloud-provider and on-device recognition options, including provider-key, self-hosted-server, on-device, and prepaid-credit routes. Those options can affect setup, connectivity, data handling, and cost; check the project’s current documentation for requirements and availability.
Desktop or Android: Talkpad
Talkpad describes hotkey-based dictation for macOS, Windows, and Android, and claims support for more than 100 languages. Its product page says the Mac app uses the microphone selected by macOS, including Bluetooth headsets. Talkpad describes its transcription as cloud-processed and says audio is not retained after transcription; those are vendor statements, not independently audited privacy guarantees. Confirm current platform and version support before relying on a particular workflow.

When a dedicated dictation microphone makes sense
A purpose-built microphone can be useful if you dictate frequently and want physical controls or a handheld form factor. It does not automatically provide AI transcription: recognition software must still be compatible with the device and your operating system.

Cloud or on-device recognition: what changes?
With cloud recognition, audio is sent to a provider or server for transcription, so connectivity and the provider’s data practices matter. On-device recognition can reduce dependence on an internet connection, but the available models, languages, and setup depend on the software. Dictate Keyboard documents both cloud and downloadable offline routes. Talkpad describes cloud processing. Review each provider’s current privacy terms and configuration before dictating sensitive material; a vendor’s description alone does not establish how every deployment handles data.
