For current vSphere host lifecycle management, use vSphere Lifecycle Manager (vLCM) Images to declare and enforce a desired ESXi host image. Baseline-based patching still matters in some supported older deployments, but Broadcom deprecated that model in vSphere 8 and removed major baseline functionality in vSphere 9. The practical choice depends on your vSphere release, hardware and image compatibility, depot access, and readiness to remediate hosts during a planned change window.
What vSphere patch-management tools actually manage
vSphere patch management is the process of keeping ESXi hosts at an approved software and hardware-driver state. The management capability lives in vCenter Server under vSphere Lifecycle Manager. It can obtain update content, evaluate host compliance, and coordinate remediation, but it does not remove the need for administrators to validate compatibility, cluster capacity, workload placement, or recovery plans.
The important distinction is the management model:
- Images describe the target state a host or cluster should run.
- Baselines group patches, extensions, or upgrades and compare attached hosts with those groups.
Images are Broadcom’s forward-looking host-lifecycle approach, particularly for vSphere 9. Baselines are a legacy, VUM-style workflow that may remain available in supported earlier releases while an organization plans its migration.
vLCM Images: declarative host lifecycle management
How the desired-image model works
With an image, you specify the software composition that a host should have rather than selecting individual bulletins one at a time. The composition can include an ESXi base version, optional vendor add-ons or components, and, where supported by the hardware vendor integration, firmware and drivers.

vLCM compares the actual host state with that declared image. If a host drifts—for example, because an administrator installed a different component—the host is identified as non-compliant. Remediation brings it back toward the desired state. This is the core automation advantage: the target is expressed as a complete, repeatable state instead of a changing list of patches.
What Images automate
- Defining a target ESXi release for a cluster or host.
- Including selected vendor add-ons and components in the target image.
- Using supported vendor integrations to coordinate firmware and driver versions.
- Checking hosts for drift from the declared image.
- Running remediation to return non-compliant hosts to that state.
Image management is not a promise that every server, adapter, or firmware package is supported. Compatibility must be checked for the exact ESXi release, server model, device, vendor add-on, and integration version.
When Images are the right choice
Use Images when the installed vSphere release supports them and you want a consistent, declared lifecycle state. They are the strategic choice for vSphere 9 host management. They also suit clusters where hosts are standardized enough to share an image and where the operations team can test and remediate that image as a unit.

How baselines work
Baselines collect update content into a named group. Depending on the release and content, a baseline can contain patches, extensions, or an upgrade. You attach the baseline, or a baseline group, to hosts or clusters. vLCM then compares each host with the associated content and reports compliance.
After reviewing the result, an administrator stages or initiates remediation. Compliance scanning and applying updates are separate actions: a host can be shown as non-compliant without being patched automatically.
When baselines still make sense
Baselines can be appropriate for an existing, supported older environment that already uses this workflow, or as an interim step while moving to Images. They may also be necessary when a particular release, extension, or operational procedure has not yet been converted to an image-based process.

Do not select baselines for a new vSphere 9 design on the assumption that the old Update Manager interface will remain a complete lifecycle solution. Broadcom’s lifecycle guidance says baseline patching was deprecated in vSphere 8 and that major baseline functionality is removed in vSphere 9.

Version history you must account for
vSphere 7.0
vLCM was introduced with vSphere 7.0. Historical VMware guidance described image clusters as requiring ESXi 7.0 or later, hosts from the same hardware vendor (ideally the same make and model), and non-stateless hosts. Those are historical prerequisites, not a blanket guarantee for every current combination, so verify present interoperability documentation before creating an image.
vSphere 8.0
Baseline-based patching was deprecated with vSphere 8. Broadcom indicated that baseline functionality would remain during vSphere 8 while organizations transitioned, but it was no longer the preferred lifecycle direction.
vSphere 9.0
Broadcom’s current vSphere 9 support guidance says major baseline functionality is removed and directs customers to vLCM Images for ESXi lifecycle operations. If you are designing or upgrading a vSphere 9 environment, treat an image-based workflow as the starting point rather than attempting to preserve a VUM-style process.
What vLCM does not automate for you
Tool selection does not eliminate change management. Before remediation, administrators still need to:

- Check that the cluster can evacuate or otherwise accommodate a host during remediation.
- Verify admission-control, HA, DRS, storage, networking, and workload-placement behavior for the planned operation.
- Define a rollback or recovery path appropriate to the environment.
- Schedule the work and communicate any expected workload or maintenance impact.
The available material does not establish zero-downtime behavior for every patch. Whether users notice an interruption depends on cluster design, workload mobility, storage and network configuration, and the specific remediation operation.

Depot access and authentication are prerequisites
vLCM needs a configured content source for patches, images, and definitions. Broadcom’s September 23, 2026 guidance states that default depot URLs changed to dl.broadcom.com and that authentication now uses unique customer-specific token URLs. Administrators must obtain the appropriate token through Broadcom Support and update the vLCM patch setup before relying on online downloads.
Check depot access before a maintenance window, not after remediation has started. A valid image definition is not enough if vCenter cannot authenticate to the configured source or resolve the required content.
Symptoms of a depot problem
- New patches or image components do not appear in the depot inventory.
- Image validation cannot resolve a component or dependency.
- Compliance data is stale because definitions cannot be downloaded.
- Remediation preparation fails while attempting to retrieve content.
Recheck the configured source, customer-specific token, proxy and firewall path, and the token’s validity. Because depot endpoints and authentication instructions can change, use the current Broadcom procedure for your release rather than copying an old generic URL.

1. Identify the exact release
Record the vCenter Server and ESXi versions, edition, and build numbers. Baseline availability is release-sensitive, and a procedure that worked in vSphere 7 may be deprecated in vSphere 8 or unavailable in vSphere 9.
2. Decide whether the desired-state model fits
Choose an Image when you can define a supported target state for the cluster or host and are prepared to remediate drift back to it. If you operate an older supported release with established baseline associations, you may continue that workflow temporarily while planning conversion.
3. Validate image composition
List the ESXi base version, vendor add-ons, components, drivers, and any firmware integration you intend to use. Check every item against the server and device compatibility guidance for the target release. Do not assume that a vendor integration covers every server generation or peripheral.

4. Confirm content delivery
For online environments, verify the current depot source and customer-specific authentication. For restricted networks, determine which approved offline or manual workflow applies to the installed release and content type.
5. Stage, assess, and schedule remediation
Run image validation or baseline compliance checks, review conflicts and warnings, and stage content where the release supports it. Plan remediation around cluster capacity and workload movement. Initiate the operation only after the change owner has accepted compatibility and recovery checks.
6. Verify after remediation
Confirm that hosts report compliance with the image or baseline, that all expected components are present, and that cluster services, storage paths, networking, and workloads are healthy. Investigate any host that remains non-compliant instead of repeatedly remediating without understanding the cause.
Offline and restricted-network environments
Manual or offline ESXi upgrades are supported through vLCM, but they are not a single universal procedure. The required import format, image construction steps, and transfer process vary by vSphere release and by whether you are importing an image, patch, upgrade, or vendor content.
Use an approved transfer process to move the required content into the controlled environment, validate its provenance and compatibility, then follow the release-specific vLCM workflow. Do not apply online-depot instructions to a disconnected installation without checking that the commands and content type match your version.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Treating baselines as the vSphere 9 default
Baseline terminology is familiar, but vSphere 9 guidance points to Images. Start with the installed-release support statement and plan migration instead of building a new design around removed functionality.

Confusing compliance with patching
A compliance scan reports a difference; it does not by itself mean the host was updated. Review and initiate remediation explicitly, with the required maintenance planning.
Assuming an image guarantees hardware support
An image can contain vendor content and supported firmware integration, but compatibility remains specific to hardware, devices, drivers, and release. Validate the complete combination.
Waiting until the change window to test depot access
Token-based authentication and endpoint changes can prevent content retrieval. Test the configured source and credentials in advance and keep an approved offline path where policy requires one.

Expecting identical procedures across releases
vLCM’s labels and supported operations change over time. Follow the procedure for the exact vCenter and ESXi release rather than relying on screenshots or runbooks from an earlier version.

Bottom line for administrators
Use vLCM Images as the default strategy for current ESXi lifecycle management, and especially for vSphere 9. Think of an Image as a declared, testable target state that vLCM can enforce when hosts drift. Use baselines only where the installed, supported release still exposes the required capability or while you execute a controlled migration. In every case, validate compatibility, secure depot or offline content access, and treat remediation as an operational change that requires capacity and recovery planning.
