VLC gained a built-in dark mode option for Windows in version 3.0.23, giving the longtime media player a more current-looking interface on Windows 11. VideoLAN’s announcement describes a dark mode—not a complete Windows 11 redesign. The Windows download page now lists VLC 3.0.24, but the available information does not establish whether that release changed the interface further.
What changed in VLC on Windows?
On January 8, 2026, VideoLAN and the VLC team announced VLC 3.0.23, which they called the 24th update to the 3.0 branch. The release added a dark mode option on Windows and Linux, alongside codec updates, Windows ARM64 support, and other improvements. The announcement does not describe a wholesale redesign or claim that VLC now follows every Windows 11 design convention.
That distinction matters: dark mode changes the interface’s appearance, but it is not the same as rebuilding the app’s controls, layout, or window styling to match the operating system. VideoLAN’s Windows download page lists version 3.0.24 and says VLC runs on Windows 11. It does not, in the information available here, document any further interface changes in 3.0.24.

Dark mode or a custom VLC skin?
VLC offers two distinct ways to change how its interface looks: the built-in dark mode option and downloadable custom skins. Dark mode is the straightforward route if you want a darker appearance without replacing the interface. A skin can change more of VLC’s appearance, but it requires a separate file and setup.

Install a custom skin
- Download a VLC skin in VLT format.
- Place the file in
C:Program FilesVideoLANVLCskins. If VLC is installed elsewhere, use the corresponding skins folder for that installation. - In VLC, open Tools → Preferences → Interface.
- Select Use custom skin, choose the VLT file, and restart VLC.

Does VLC now look native to Windows 11?
“Proper Windows 11 look” is a reasonable description of the visual improvement some users may want from dark mode, but it is not VideoLAN’s stated feature claim. Microsoft’s design guidance describes a Windows 11 experience in terms of coherent styling, familiar controls, readable hierarchy, and elements such as color, layering, materials, geometry, typography, and motion. Those principles offer a way to judge an app’s fit; they do not establish that VLC implements each one.
In practical terms, a dark interface can feel more at home on a dark Windows desktop. Whether VLC feels fully native also depends on details such as window surfaces, control styling, and how clearly the interface organizes playback features. The release announcement confirms the dark mode option, but it does not provide a detailed Windows 11 design audit.

Microsoft’s built-in Media Player is a useful point of visual context, not a basis for a current feature-by-feature ranking. In a November 2021 Windows Insider announcement, Microsoft said the new Media Player was designed to complement Windows 11’s look and feel. The post described music-library and local-video browsing, playback views with album art, and accessibility improvements. That is dated rollout information, not a current comparison of performance, format support, privacy, or overall quality.
