Choose Vixen 357 for a compact, retro-styled science-fiction simulation built around 16 demanding levels, flexible unit assignment, permadeath and experimentation tools. Choose FRONT MISSION 1st: Remake for a longer-feeling, character-led military RPG set in a detailed 2090 conflict, with dozens of named characters and Wanzer warfare.
Both games support TV, tabletop and handheld play and are marked compatible with Nintendo Switch 2. The important differences are campaign scale, story density, tactical pressure, player count and how you can buy them: Nintendo lists Vixen 357 as a digital Switch edition, while Front Mission is sold digitally and as a Nintendo Switch Game Card edition.

There is no objective winner because the games optimize for different kinds of satisfaction. Vixen 357 makes every deployment feel risky and encourages you to test plans, rewind mistakes and live with losses. Front Mission gives more weight to its setting, relationships and political context, then places battles inside that larger military narrative.
What Vixen 357 is like on Switch
A short campaign organized around 16 levels
Nintendo describes Vixen 357 as “16 different levels of pure tactical strategy.” That number makes the game easier to understand than a sprawling role-playing campaign: you are working through a defined sequence of missions rather than an open-ended world. The compact structure suits players who prefer concentrated scenarios, repeated attempts and a clear finish line.

Nintendo lists October 23, 2026 as the release date. That is the date shown in Nintendo’s listing, so storefront availability can still vary by region around launch. The game is presented as a digital Nintendo Switch edition rather than a listed retail cartridge.
Assign any VECTOR to any character
The central tactical choice is assignment. Vixen 357 lets you assign any VECTOR unit to any character, so a mission is not simply a fixed roster following predetermined equipment roles. You can try a different pairing when a plan fails, use the same characters in new configurations and decide which combinations are worth protecting.
This flexibility is also where the game’s risk becomes meaningful. Permadeath means a loss can remove a character permanently instead of functioning as a harmless reset. Unit assignment therefore affects more than a single turn: it changes who is available for later levels and which tactical options remain.

Permadeath and narrative decisions
The game combines battlefield survival with decisions that reveal more about the attack on the Slash Unit. The result is a campaign where failure is part of the story’s pressure rather than merely a score penalty. If you enjoy planning around scarce survivors and accepting that an imperfect victory may be the only victory available, Vixen 357 is the more naturally demanding choice.
Permadeath can also be the wrong fit if you dislike losing a developed character to one bad turn. The game’s rewind and save-state features soften that risk, but they do not remove the underlying design: you are expected to think about positioning, assignment and consequences before committing.
Tools for experimentation
Vixen 357 includes rewind, turbo, save states, screen filters and optional cheats. These options support two different play styles. You can use rewind and saves as training wheels while learning a level, or impose stricter rules on yourself and treat every loss as permanent. Turbo speeds through familiar portions of play, while screen filters let you change the visual presentation to suit a retro display preference. Optional cheats are available for players who value access and experimentation over an uncompromising run.

No published Vixen 357 review is established in the available coverage, so claims about its visual quality, performance or balance should not be treated as measured review findings. The documented feature set is enough to identify its design priorities, but not to promise a particular frame rate or difficulty curve.

A 2090 military story on Huffman Island
Front Mission begins in 2090, when conflicts are fought with giant war machines called Wanzers. You play O.C.U. captain Royd Clive after an ambush and the disappearance of his fiancée, Karen Meure. His investigation leads into the wider conspiracy behind the Huffman Island incident.
This setup gives the remake a different center of gravity from Vixen 357. The campaign is not only a chain of tactical problems; it is also a military drama populated by many named people and competing interests. Nintendo describes the cast as dozens of characters and the story as mature, with non-Manichean protagonists rather than a simple good-versus-evil split.
Classic tactical-JRPG structure with updated controls
Front Mission uses turn-based strategy/RPG combat and frames its machines as Wanzers. Nintendo’s official listing highlights a Modern mode with improved controls, which is useful if you want the original game’s structure without committing to older control conventions.
The remake is still a single-player campaign. Its one-player listing means you should buy it for a solo narrative and tactical progression, not for local co-op or competitive multiplayer.

Nintendo Life’s review profile praises the remake’s visuals but characterizes battlefield play as a slog. That is an important qualification for buyers who value presentation and story but expect every battle to move quickly. A slower battlefield rhythm may suit players who enjoy deliberate positioning and campaign immersion; it may frustrate anyone looking for the compact, restart-friendly tempo associated with Vixen 357.

How the campaigns differ
Choose Vixen 357 for pressure per mission
Vixen 357’s 16-level format keeps attention on the next tactical problem. The Slash Unit mystery supplies narrative momentum, but the defining question in each scenario is practical: which character receives which VECTOR, who can be risked, and whether a mistake is worth rewinding. The campaign’s identity comes from survival, experimentation and the possibility that a poor decision permanently changes your roster.
Choose Front Mission for story density
Front Mission gives more space to Royd Clive’s investigation, the disappearance of Karen Meure and the political conflict surrounding Huffman Island. Dozens of characters create a broader social and military context than a compact 16-level simulation is designed to provide. If you want named relationships and morally complicated factions to carry as much weight as individual turns, Front Mission is the stronger match.
Tactical identity: high-stakes simulation versus military RPG
| If you care most about… | Better match | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Trying different unit and character combinations | Vixen 357 | Any VECTOR can be assigned to any character, encouraging experimentation between attempts. |
| Consequences for losing a character | Vixen 357 | Permadeath makes roster protection part of the strategy. |
| A campaign framed by a geopolitical conflict | FRONT MISSION 1st: Remake | The 2090 Huffman Island setting and Royd’s investigation provide the larger narrative frame. |
| A large named cast | FRONT MISSION 1st: Remake | Nintendo’s listing describes dozens of characters. |
| Fast recovery from a tactical error | Vixen 357 | Rewind and save-state features let you test a decision without replaying everything. |
| Updated handling for a classic game | FRONT MISSION 1st: Remake | Its Modern mode is documented as providing improved controls. |
Neither game should be selected solely because it contains giant machines. The machines serve different structures: Vixen 357 uses VECTOR assignment and survival pressure to make a compact simulation feel tense, while Front Mission uses Wanzers as the foundation for a character-driven tactical RPG.
Difficulty, failure and replay value
How Vixen 357 treats failure
Permadeath creates a meaningful distinction between winning a level and preserving your campaign. A unit can be sacrificed to complete an objective, but that choice may narrow the options available later. Rewind and save states let you explore the consequences deliberately, and optional cheats make the game more approachable if you want to study systems rather than protect a perfect run.
This combination is useful for players who enjoy self-directed difficulty. You can rewind freely while learning, then replay without assistance once you understand the level, or keep the safety tools active throughout a casual run.
How Front Mission treats pacing
Front Mission’s documented Modern mode addresses controls, not the fundamental pace of its battlefields. Nintendo Life’s “slog” caveat means you should expect to spend time in encounters and consider whether deliberate battles complement your interest in the story. It is a better fit for patient players than for anyone who wants every mission to be brief.

Presentation and convenience on Nintendo Switch
Both titles support the three standard Switch play styles: TV, tabletop and handheld. Both are also marked compatible with Nintendo Switch 2. That makes either game suitable for moving between a television session and portable play without changing platforms.
The practical difference is in the software tools. Vixen 357 offers rewind, turbo, save states, screen filters and optional cheats, giving you direct control over how much friction you want. Front Mission offers a Modern control mode, but its main convenience is a more accessible interface for a classic single-player campaign rather than a collection of simulation assists.
Player count and what it means
Nintendo lists Vixen 357 at one to two players and Front Mission 1st: Remake at one player. The listing establishes the player counts but does not, by itself, describe the exact form of Vixen 357’s second-player support. Check the final regional product page for the mode details before buying specifically for two-person play.
Front Mission should be treated as a solo purchase. Its campaign, character progression and investigation are designed for one player, with no documented local multiplayer mode in the listing summarized here.

If you are deciding on price or format
Format is the clearest practical separator. Vixen 357 is the digital-only listing, while Front Mission has both digital and Game Card editions. Current prices, stock and regional availability are volatile and are not fixed by the game descriptions, so compare the live Nintendo storefront or retailer listing at the time you purchase.
Answers to common buying questions
Is Vixen 357 like Front Mission?
They share science-fiction tactical foundations and giant-machine combat themes, but they are not interchangeable. Vixen 357 is a compact simulation built around 16 levels, flexible VECTOR assignment, permadeath and experimentation tools. Front Mission is a turn-based strategy/RPG whose identity comes from its 2090 setting, Royd Clive’s investigation, Wanzers and a much larger named cast.
Does Vixen 357 have permadeath?
Yes. Permadeath is one of its defining documented systems. Rewind and save states can help you practice or recover from a decision, but the campaign is designed around the possibility that a character will not return.
Recommended Free Tools
Is Front Mission 1st: Remake single-player?

Can I get Front Mission on a physical Switch cartridge?

Bottom line
Vixen 357 is the better choice for players who want concentrated tactical pressure, flexible VECTOR assignments and the tension of permadeath, with rewind and save-state tools available when they want to experiment. FRONT MISSION 1st: Remake is the better choice for players who want a mature, character-heavy military story, Wanzer combat and the option of owning a physical Game Card. Decide whether your priority is surviving the next level or following a larger political campaign, and the right Switch strategy RPG becomes clear.
