Use Vite+’s vp pack when you want an integrated Vite+ packaging pipeline; use tsup when you want a small, focused esbuild-based CLI. For a library, do not substitute vp build for vp pack: Vite+ documents vp build for Vite application builds and vp pack for libraries and standalone packages. Both tools can emit JavaScript and declaration files and can rebuild while you edit, but they differ in scope, configuration, output controls, and maintenance direction.

Vite+ vs tsup at a glance

The practical choice depends on whether your library is part of a broader Vite workflow or is an independent package that needs the fewest moving parts. Vite+ Pack is the more integrated option. It uses tsdown-oriented packaging and exposes declaration generation, format selection, source maps, minification, and watch mode through the pack section of vite.config.ts. tsup is the more focused option: a no-config TypeScript bundler powered by esbuild, driven from a concise command line or a small configuration file.

Question Vite+ Pack tsup
Library command vp pack tsup <entry>
Underlying approach Integrated Vite+ workflow with tsdown for packaging Standalone esbuild-powered bundler
Declaration switch dts: true in the pack block or --dts on the command line --dts
Library watch command vp pack --watch tsup <entry> --watch
Documented format example format: ['esm', 'cjs'] Format selection is configured through tsup’s esbuild-based options
Source-map control sourcemap: true in the documented Pack example Use the tsup/esbuild configuration appropriate to your package
Maintenance signal Vite+ provides migration rules for consolidating Vite, Vitest, tsdown, and tsup setups The npm listing identifies version 8.5.1 and says the project is not actively maintained, pointing users toward tsdown

That table describes the documented paths, not a claim that one tool produces universally better bundles. Your package’s entry points, dependency policy, module targets, and release checks still determine whether the generated output is publishable.

What Vite+ Pack is designed to do

A library-first command

Vite+ separates application builds from package builds. The library entry point is vp pack, which the Pack guide describes as building libraries and standalone executables with tsdown. This distinction matters in monorepos where an application and one or more packages live together: application-oriented settings belong to the build workflow, while package output, declaration files, and publishable formats belong to Pack.

Configuration in vite.config.ts

Pack settings are placed in the pack block of your Vite+ configuration. The documented example is:

import { defineConfig } from 'vite-plus';

export default defineConfig({
  pack: {
    dts: true,
    format: ['esm', 'cjs'],
    sourcemap: true,
  },
});

In this example, dts: true asks Pack to emit declaration files, the two format entries request both ECMAScript modules and CommonJS output, and sourcemap: true creates maps for debugging compiled code. Pack also documents minification and watch mode as part of its library packaging capabilities. Treat these as package-release settings rather than incidental defaults: consumers will resolve whichever formats and type paths your published metadata exposes.

Command forms

You can package the project using the configuration file:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
vp pack

For a one-off entry point with declarations:

vp pack src/index.ts --dts

For continuous rebuilding during library development:

vp pack --watch

The entry-point form is useful for testing a package boundary before committing a larger configuration. Once the package has multiple entry points, format requirements, or shared settings, keeping those decisions in the pack block gives the team one repeatable release command.

What tsup is designed to do

A minimal esbuild CLI

tsup’s official documentation presents it as a no-config TypeScript bundler powered by esbuild. That positioning suits a small library with a clear entry file and little interest in adopting a complete application toolchain. You can start with the entry point on the command line and add options only when the package needs them.

Declaration and watch commands

Build JavaScript and declarations from an entry point with:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
tsup src/index.ts --dts

Keep the package rebuilding after source edits with:

tsup src/index.ts --watch

The documented watch behavior follows resolved files after the initial build. tsup ignores dist, node_modules, and .git by default, which prevents common output and dependency directories from triggering unnecessary rebuilds. If your source graph includes generated files or a linked workspace package, verify that the files you expect to trigger a rebuild are actually resolved by the entry point.

When the small CLI is an advantage

tsup is attractive when the package has a straightforward boundary and you want a short build script that contributors can understand immediately. It avoids introducing Vite application concepts solely to bundle a library. The trade-off is that decisions shared with a Vite application, test runner, or another package bundler may remain split across separate configuration systems.

Declaration files: what changes between the tools

Vite+ declaration generation

Vite+ Pack enables declarations with dts: true in configuration or --dts for a command-line invocation. The declaration step is part of the same packaging pipeline that emits JavaScript formats and maps, so a release build can produce the artifacts consumers need in one command.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

tsup declaration generation

tsup enables declarations with --dts. The official documentation warns that declarations generated by tools other than tsc are not guaranteed to be error-free and recommends checking the published output. That warning applies to package quality, not just to tsup: a successful bundling process does not prove that every exported type resolves correctly for an external consumer.

A validation routine for either tool

Use the generated files as release artifacts and inspect them before publishing. A useful routine is:

  1. Build the package with the declaration option enabled.
  2. Open the generated declaration entry point and verify that public types are present, readable, and not accidentally private.
  3. Check that declarations refer to dependencies using paths consumers can resolve, rather than workspace-only aliases.
  4. Install the packed package into a small consumer project and compile that consumer with your supported TypeScript versions.
  5. Test both the JavaScript import paths and the type entry paths declared in the package metadata.

This catches a class of failures that a local build can miss: an internal alias may work in the repository while the same declaration fails after the package is installed elsewhere.

Bundling, formats, maps, and dependency boundaries

Choosing ESM and CommonJS

Many libraries still need to serve both module ecosystems. Vite+’s documented Pack configuration requests ESM and CommonJS with format: ['esm', 'cjs']. If you publish both, make sure your package metadata maps each condition to the corresponding file and that the declaration path is unambiguous. A build that emits two formats but advertises only one entry point creates a consumer-facing packaging problem, not a bundler problem.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

With tsup, format selection remains part of the tool’s esbuild-based configuration. Decide first whether your support policy actually requires both formats; emitting an unnecessary second format increases test and release surface area.

Source maps and minification

Pack documents source-map and minification controls alongside its other library output features. Source maps are useful when consumers debug a stack trace back to TypeScript, while minification reduces distributable size at the cost of less readable generated code. Choose maps according to your debugging and disclosure policy: a map can improve support diagnostics, but publishing it also makes the correspondence to source easier to inspect.

tsup delegates bundling behavior to esbuild and exposes the corresponding configuration options. Keep source-map and minification choices consistent across development and release scripts so that a local watch build does not conceal a production-only transformation.

External dependencies

Dependency treatment is a package-design decision. Libraries commonly externalize peer dependencies so that the consuming application supplies them, while bundling small implementation dependencies can make installation simpler. Inspect the generated JavaScript and package metadata together; a dependency that is external in the bundle must be available to consumers at runtime, and a dependency that is bundled should not be required again merely because a declaration file mentions its types.

Vite library mode is not the same as Vite+ Pack

Plain Vite has a documented build.lib mode intended as a simple, opinionated path for browser-oriented and JavaScript framework libraries. It can emit multiple formats and CSS, but the guide places responsibility on the author to externalize dependencies that should not be bundled. This mode is a natural fit when the package is closely coupled to a browser demo or framework build that already uses Vite.

Vite’s guide points to tsdown or Rolldown directly for more advanced or non-browser library workflows. Vite+ Pack gives those authors an explicit library command while keeping configuration in the Vite+ ecosystem. Therefore, the comparison has three distinct choices: plain Vite library mode for a closely related browser or framework package, Vite+ Pack for an integrated package pipeline, and tsup for a standalone esbuild CLI.

Watch mode in daily library development

Vite+ Pack watch

Run vp pack --watch to rebuild the library after source changes. This is the appropriate watch command for package artifacts. If you are developing an application instead, Vite+ documents vp build --watch; that command should not be treated as a replacement for Pack when declarations and publishable library formats are the goal.

tsup watch

Run tsup src/index.ts --watch. tsup watches the files resolved from the initial build and ignores dist, node_modules, and .git by default. This keeps the common edit-build loop short, particularly for a package with one obvious entry point.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Configuration changes require a restart

Vite’s build-watch guidance notes that configuration changes and configuration dependencies require restarting the build command. Apply that operational rule to a Vite-based watch session: if you change vite.config.ts, a plugin used by the configuration, format settings, or declaration settings, stop and restart vp pack --watch rather than waiting for a source edit to pick up the change. A source-only edit should rebuild normally; a configuration edit changes how the build is constructed.

Watching generated or linked sources

If a workspace package is compiled into a generated directory, confirm the watcher is following the source that actually enters the bundle. An ignored output directory should not be used as the canonical input. When a change appears to do nothing, trace the import from the package entry point, check whether the imported file is generated, and restart the watcher after changing configuration.

Maintenance and migration considerations

The current tsup package signal

The npm listing identifies tsup version 8.5.1 and currently states: “This project is not actively maintained anymore. Please consider using tsdown instead.” Treat that as a maintenance signal when starting a new library or planning a long-lived toolchain. It does not mean an existing tsup build suddenly stops running; it means you should account for the likelihood that fixes, compatibility updates, or new platform support may arrive elsewhere.

Vite+ migration

Vite+ provides a migration command intended to consolidate separate Vite, Vitest, tsdown, and tsup setups into a unified vite.config.ts. Its migration rules document changes to Pack options and declaration-generator settings. After migration, review every generated diff rather than accepting the result as a semantic no-op, then run the project’s type checks, package build, consumer compilation, and runtime tests.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Migration is most valuable when the repository already has several overlapping build configurations. If tsup is a tiny, stable part of a small package and no shared Vite workflow exists, the coordination cost of migration may outweigh the benefit. Make the decision based on the number of tools you are consolidating and the amount of release automation that depends on their current output.

Which tool should you choose?

Choose Vite+ Pack when

  • Your repository already uses Vite+ and you want one configuration surface for application and library work.
  • You need a documented library command that covers declarations, ESM and CommonJS formats, source maps, minification, and watch mode.
  • You are consolidating Vite, Vitest, tsdown, or tsup settings and are prepared to review migration changes.
  • Your package has several entry points or release variants and benefits from central configuration instead of ad hoc scripts.

Choose tsup when

  • You want a focused, esbuild-powered CLI with minimal setup.
  • Your package has a clear entry point and does not need an integrated Vite configuration.
  • You prefer the short commands tsup src/index.ts --dts and tsup src/index.ts --watch.
  • You have an explicit plan for maintenance, upgrades, and a possible future move to tsdown if the package’s needs or support expectations change.

Choose plain Vite library mode when

  • The package is primarily browser- or framework-oriented and is tightly coupled to a Vite demo or application.
  • You are comfortable making dependency-externalization decisions in build.lib.
  • Your needs fit Vite’s simple library mode rather than a broader package workflow.

Release checklist for either workflow

  1. Confirm the intended entry points and whether consumers need ESM, CommonJS, or both.
  2. Build with declaration generation enabled.
  3. Verify that source maps and minification match your debugging and distribution policy.
  4. Inspect external and peer dependencies in the emitted code and package metadata.
  5. Install the packed package in a clean consumer project.
  6. Compile consumer code against the published declarations, not only the repository’s source files.
  7. Exercise the documented import paths at runtime.
  8. Run the same checks in continuous integration that you use before a local release.
  9. If you changed Vite+ configuration or a configuration dependency, restart watch mode before judging the result.

Bottom line

For a new or expanding TypeScript library, Vite+’s vp pack is the better fit when an integrated, configurable pipeline matters. tsup remains a convenient focused CLI for existing or deliberately minimal packages, but its current npm maintenance warning should be part of your long-term planning. Whichever tool you select, treat declaration validation and consumer-package testing as release requirements rather than assuming a successful bundle guarantees usable types.
