For routine U.S. reference intake, babies from birth through 12 months need 400 IU (10 mcg) a day, people ages 1–70 need 600 IU (15 mcg), and adults older than 70 need 800 IU (20 mcg). The tolerable upper limit is 4,000 IU (100 mcg) daily for anyone age 9 or older, counting food, drinks and supplements. That upper limit is a safety boundary, not a target. Higher doses may be appropriate temporarily for a diagnosed deficiency, but only under a clinician’s direction.
What the standard vitamin D doses mean
These amounts are U.S. dietary reference values from the National Academies’ Food and Nutrition Board, summarized by the NIH Office of Dietary Supplements (ODS). They are designed for generally healthy people and assume minimal sun exposure. They support bone health and normal calcium metabolism; they do not diagnose deficiency or prescribe a treatment course.
One microgram (mcg) of vitamin D equals 40 international units (IU). Product labels may use either unit, so convert before adding products together.
| Life stage | Reference intake | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Birth through 12 months | 400 IU (10 mcg) daily | Adequate intake, rather than an RDA |
| Ages 1–70 | 600 IU (15 mcg) daily | Recommended dietary allowance (RDA) |
| Pregnancy and lactation, ages 14–50 | 600 IU (15 mcg) daily | Same RDA as other adults in this age range |
| Adults older than 70 | 800 IU (20 mcg) daily | RDA |
The infant figure is called an adequate intake because the evidence is not expressed as an RDA for that age group. The 600-IU recommendation for ages 1–70 also covers pregnancy and breastfeeding for people ages 14–50.

Recommended intake versus the upper limit
The recommended intake describes the amount generally needed each day. The tolerable upper intake level (UL) is the highest average daily intake unlikely to cause harm for most healthy people. It includes vitamin D from food, beverages and every supplement, not just a standalone vitamin D tablet.
| Age | Tolerable upper intake level |
|---|---|
| Birth–6 months | 1,000 IU (25 mcg) per day |
| 7–12 months | 1,500 IU (37.5 mcg) per day |
| 1–3 years | 2,500 IU (62.5 mcg) per day |
| 4–8 years | 3,000 IU (75 mcg) per day |
| Age 9 and older, including adults | 4,000 IU (100 mcg) per day |
Do not treat the UL as a goal or as proof that a dose below it is right for you. It is a population safety boundary for routine intake. A clinician can intentionally prescribe more for a limited period when laboratory results and medical history justify treatment.
How to work out your total daily intake
Before starting a supplement, add the vitamin D supplied by all sources. This prevents an unnoticed combination of products from exceeding the UL.

- Read every label. Record the amount per serving in IU or mcg and check how many servings you actually take.
- Include combination products. A multivitamin, calcium product, fortified drink or other supplement may contain vitamin D even when it is not the product’s main purpose.
- Convert units when needed. Multiply mcg by 40 to get IU, or divide IU by 40 to get mcg.
- Add food and beverage sources. The UL applies to the combined total, not only to pills.
- Compare the result with your life-stage reference. If you are already meeting the recommended amount, more is not automatically better.
- Ask a clinician or pharmacist about uncertainty. Bring photographs of labels or a written list of products, doses and frequency.
A generic vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) product can be one way to meet ordinary intake when food and other sources do not provide enough, but a supplement is not automatically necessary for everyone. Product choice cannot determine whether you are deficient or need treatment.
Why high doses can be dangerous
Vitamin D toxicity almost always results from excessive supplement use rather than ordinary exposure. Too much vitamin D can raise blood and urine calcium. Reported effects include nausea, vomiting, muscle weakness, confusion and other neuropsychiatric changes, excessive thirst, frequent urination, dehydration and kidney stones. Severe toxicity can lead to kidney failure, calcification of soft tissues, cardiac arrhythmias or death.
Risk can arise from taking multiple products, confusing a weekly prescription with a daily dose, using a concentrated preparation incorrectly or continuing a temporary loading regimen indefinitely. If you develop severe vomiting, marked weakness, confusion, dehydration, symptoms of kidney stones or an irregular heartbeat while taking high-dose vitamin D, stop self-adjusting the dose and seek urgent medical advice.

Do not use deliberate sun exposure as a self-treatment plan for suspected deficiency. Sunlight, skin type, season, latitude, clothing and skin-cancer risk vary too widely to provide an individualized dose, and the reference values above are dietary and clinical guidance.
When a clinician should decide the dose
Suspected or confirmed deficiency
A clinician may order a blood test, interpret the result with your history and prescribe a short treatment course. A treatment dose is different from the routine RDA and may temporarily exceed the UL. Never convert someone else’s prescription into your own regimen.
Medical conditions that change risk
General reference values may not fit people with conditions affecting calcium, the kidneys, the liver, intestinal absorption or bone metabolism. Your clinician can decide whether testing, a different preparation or monitoring is appropriate.

Medicines and other supplements
Tell the prescriber about all medicines, vitamins and mineral products. Interactions, duplicate ingredients and altered calcium handling can make a standard over-the-counter dose unsuitable.
Infants, children and pregnancy
Use the age-specific values in the tables, but obtain professional advice for an infant or child with illness, restricted feeding, a prescribed product or a dose above the routine amount. Pregnancy and breastfeeding have the same 600-IU RDA for ages 14–50, while individualized treatment still belongs with the obstetric or primary-care clinician.

The main marker of vitamin D status is serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D, written as 25(OH)D. The ODS fact sheet reports population-oriented interpretations from the National Academies and Food and Nutrition Board:

| 25(OH)D result | Population interpretation reported by ODS |
|---|---|
| Below 12 ng/mL (30 nmol/L) | Associated with deficiency risk |
| 12 to under 20 ng/mL (30 to under 50 nmol/L) | Potentially inadequate for some people |
| 20 ng/mL (50 nmol/L) or higher | Sufficient for most people |
These cutoffs are not a personal prescription and do not establish one universally optimal concentration. The ODS notes that optimal levels and their clinical implications are not definitively established.
Routine screening is not automatically required. The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force found insufficient evidence to determine the balance of benefits and harms of screening asymptomatic adults. The ODS health-professional fact sheet summarizes the Endocrine Society position this way: “The Endocrine Society has not identified 25(OH)D concentrations associated with vitamin D sufficiency, insufficiency, and deficiency and does not recommend routine testing of 25(OH)D concentrations in healthy individuals.” A clinician can still order a test when symptoms, risk factors, medicines or medical history make it useful.

Treatment is individualized because the required amount depends on the starting level, absorption, kidney and liver function, calcium status, age, medicines and the clinician’s treatment protocol. The reviewed sources do not establish one universal dose for every deficient patient.

The NHS page on how and when to take colecalciferol says adult loading doses for severe deficiency are usually taken daily or weekly for six to ten weeks. That description is a clinician-directed course, not permission to copy a loading schedule. If you receive one, confirm the exact strength, frequency, number of doses, end date and any follow-up blood tests.
- Ask what diagnosis the course is treating and what result or symptom will be monitored.
- Write the schedule down separately from your routine medicines; highlight whether the dose is daily or weekly.
- Check the product strength before every dose, especially if the pharmacy changes the package.
- Ask when to stop the loading course and whether you should switch to a maintenance amount.
- Report side effects or accidental extra doses promptly rather than trying to compensate on your own.
Questions to take to an appointment
- Do my symptoms or risk factors justify a 25(OH)D test?
- Which of my medicines or supplements contribute vitamin D or affect calcium?
- What daily total should I use, and does it include my multivitamin or fortified foods?
- If treatment is prescribed, is the dose daily or weekly, for how long, and what is the follow-up plan?
- What symptoms should prompt me to stop the supplement or seek urgent care?
Putting the numbers in context
ODS reports that, in cited 2013–2014 U.S. intake data, people age 2 and older consumed a mean 4.8 mcg (192 IU) of vitamin D per day from foods and beverages alone, rising to 19.9 mcg (796 IU) when supplements were included. Those figures describe that survey period, are not a current estimate and should not be used to set an individual dose. They illustrate why the label on every supplement matters when comparing total intake with the age-specific recommendation and UL.
A safe decision path
- Generally healthy and choosing routine intake: Use the table for your age or life stage and count all sources.
- Considering a high-dose product: Do not start it without professional advice, particularly if the intended dose exceeds the UL or the product is marketed as a loading regimen.
- Have symptoms, a risk factor or a relevant medical condition: Ask whether evaluation and 25(OH)D testing are appropriate instead of guessing from a general chart.
- Already have a prescription: Follow the written schedule exactly and clarify the stop date, monitoring and maintenance plan.
- Taking several products: Recalculate the combined daily amount whenever a label, brand, serving size or prescription changes.
The practical distinction is simple: reference intakes guide ordinary nutrition, the UL limits routine exposure, and treatment doses require a clinician’s assessment and follow-up.
