Short answer: choose Visual Studio Code (VS Code) shared canvases if your team already runs VS Code with GitHub Copilot and wants an agent to manage interactive boards, diagrams, or planning surfaces on each developer’s desktop. Choose Cursor if you need a documented, publish-to-team workflow that produces read-only live snapshots, supports reruns and source editing, and can be standardized as repeatable skills. Use Live Share with either editor when people—not an AI agent—must edit and debug the same code in real time.
The products solve related but different collaboration problems. VS Code 1.142 (released October 14, 2026) introduces canvases as a Preview feature for local Copilot Agent Host sessions. Cursor treats canvases as saved interactive artifacts that can be published to eligible paid team members. Neither product should be described as a complete replacement for synchronous human pair programming.
What “canvas collaboration” means in each editor
A canvas is not simply another chat transcript. It is a rendered surface—such as a board, report, chart, or interactive analysis—that an AI agent can inspect and update while you review the result. The important distinction is the collaboration object and who is allowed to change it.

How VS Code shared AI canvases work
What arrived in VS Code 1.142
Microsoft’s Visual Studio Code 1.142 release notes, dated October 14, 2026, describe canvases as “interactive interfaces to collaborate with an agent.” A canvas opens beside chat so the user and agent can inspect and update one artifact. Microsoft’s example is a Kanban board: you can move cards on the board while the agent updates the underlying artifact.

The feature is in Preview, so behavior, supported hosts, and controls can change. It is available in the VS Code desktop app, in the editor and Agents window, when the session uses the Copilot harness and a supported local Copilot Agent Host.
Enable the feature
- Install or update the VS Code desktop application to version 1.142 or later.
- Open Settings with
Ctrl+,on Windows/Linux orCmd+,on macOS. - Search for
chat.canvases.enabledand turn the setting on. You can also open the JSON settings editor and add"chat.canvases.enabled": true. - Open Chat or the Agents window and start a local Copilot Agent Host session.
- Ask the agent for an interactive artifact—such as a planning board, diagram, or report—or accept the canvas it proposes when it determines that a canvas fits the task.
The canvas appears beside the conversation. Inspect the rendered surface, make direct changes where supported, and continue prompting the agent to refine the same artifact.
Supported and unsupported environments
The agent-harness documentation places a significant boundary around the feature: canvases are available only on desktop in supported local Copilot Agent Host sessions. They are not supported in the following environments:

This means a team member using the web version, a remote Agent Host, or one of the unsupported agent session types should not be expected to create or operate the same canvas. Check the host type before designing a team workflow around the feature.

What users and agents can change
VS Code’s model is a shared working surface between one user and one agent session. You can inspect the rendered artifact and make changes such as moving cards; the agent can then update the artifact in response. The published release material does not define a general “publish this canvas to teammates” command, a read-only share link, or simultaneous multi-user canvas editing. Treat this as agent collaboration inside the desktop session, not as a confirmed team distribution system.
Governance considerations
The same VS Code release introduces stronger enterprise controls for agent sandboxing and permission policies. Those controls matter when an agent can read project files or perform actions, but Microsoft does not state that every control is canvas-specific. Procurement teams should therefore verify how their chosen policies apply to canvas content, tool calls, file access, and data retention rather than assuming that a canvas has an independent sharing policy.

Cursor documents canvases as standalone interactive artifacts rendered next to chat. The workflow is:

- The agent builds the dashboard, analysis, audit, report, or other interactive surface.
- You review the rendered view and, when needed, inspect or edit the source.
- You prompt Cursor for changes, rerun the artifact, and review the updated result.
- Cursor saves the canvas so it can be reopened and rerun with fresh data.
This saved-artifact model is useful for recurring reports and audits. Cursor also describes packaging repeatable workflows as skills. A skill can specify trigger descriptions, layout instructions, data sources or queries, and formatting rules, allowing a team to produce consistently structured canvases instead of starting from an empty prompt each time.

What a published canvas contains
Publishing creates a live snapshot. Teammates open a link and see the same layout, charts, and tables without rerunning the agent. The snapshot is read-only for viewers; they cannot edit the published canvas in place. The owner’s Shared Canvases dashboard lists canvases that owner has published. A canvas published by another teammate is opened through that teammate’s share link rather than appearing in the owner’s dashboard.
Plan, membership, and privacy gates
Cursor’s documented sharing availability includes Premium and higher paid plans, Teams, Enterprise, and legacy Pro, Pro+, and Ultra plans. Free accounts cannot create shares. Only members of the relevant team can open a shared canvas.
Sharing also requires a privacy mode that permits data storage. Cursor states that Legacy Privacy Mode blocks shared canvases. If your organization enforces that mode, the share control will not provide the workflow described above. Team administrators can disable shared canvases in team settings, so confirm the organization-level switch before promising stakeholders a share link.
Editing after publication
The owner can continue editing the source and rerunning the canvas, then publish an updated snapshot. Viewers do not become co-authors through the link. If several people must work on the artifact, establish an owner-and-reviewer process or use a separate human co-editing tool for the source.

Can teammates edit the same AI artifact?
VS Code: shared with the agent, not a documented multi-user canvas
VS Code 1.142 clearly supports user-and-agent inspection and updates of one canvas. The cited release and harness pages do not document teammate publishing, multi-user permissions, or simultaneous editing of a canvas. You can share the resulting project files through your normal source-control process, but that is different from inviting colleagues into one live canvas.
Cursor: published viewers are read-only
Cursor provides the clearest team distribution path: publish a snapshot, send the link, and let eligible team members view the artifact. The published view is intentionally read-only. It is suitable for communicating a result or review package, not for a group editing session.
Live Share: the right answer for human co-editing
When the requirement is that two or more people edit code together, Live Share remains the stronger fit. Participants immediately see one another’s edits, selections, and cursors; they can work together or independently across files, follow a colleague’s file and scroll position, and send a focus request. A host can make the session read-only and restrict guest file access with .vsls.json. Shared terminals, shared servers, browser joining, and shared debugging are also documented capabilities.
Microsoft labels Live Share as being in maintenance mode, with no additional features planned. That status does not remove the existing real-time tools, but it should temper expectations of major new collaboration features.

Which editor fits common team scenarios?
Agent-managed planning boards and diagrams
Choose VS Code when the team is already standardized on VS Code and Copilot, the artifact belongs beside the codebase, and a local desktop workflow is acceptable. A product team could ask an agent to create a Kanban board, move cards during planning, and have the agent keep the artifact consistent with project context. Verify that every participant who must operate the canvas has a supported local Copilot Agent Host.
Recurring reports, audits, and dashboards
Choose Cursor when the output must be saved, reopened, rerun with fresh data, and distributed as a consistent snapshot. Skills are a practical differentiator: the team can encode a trigger, data query, layout, and formatting rules once, then reuse that recipe for weekly audits or operational reports. Budget for an eligible paid plan and make sure storage-allowing privacy settings are acceptable.
Reviewing an AI-generated result with stakeholders
Cursor’s read-only share is the more explicit workflow. Stakeholders who are team members can open the live snapshot without running the agent. For external guests, the documented team-membership requirement means you should not assume the link will work outside the organization.

Pair programming, mentoring, interviews, and incident response
Use Live Share alongside either editor. Its real-time cursors, following, focus requests, shared terminals, servers, and debugging address human coordination directly. A canvas can explain a plan or present an analysis, but it does not replace a synchronized coding session.
Remote or browser-first development
Cursor may be the simpler choice if the team’s workflow depends on an editor experience documented for its canvas feature. VS Code canvases have a narrower support matrix: browser clients and remote Agent Host sessions are explicitly unsupported, as are several alternate agent hosts. Test the exact development topology before adopting the VS Code canvas feature as a standard.
Administration, privacy, and rollout checks
VS Code checklist
- Confirm VS Code desktop 1.142 or later is deployed.
- Enable
chat.canvases.enabledthrough the approved settings mechanism. - Verify that the agent session is local and uses the Copilot Agent Host.
- Document which files and tools the agent may access under your sandbox and permission policies.

A practical rollout often combines products rather than forcing one tool to do everything: use VS Code canvases for Copilot-centered planning, Cursor for published recurring artifacts where its paid sharing model fits, and Live Share for synchronous human sessions. Keep the collaboration object explicit in your policy—agent-managed artifact, read-only snapshot, or live shared project—so users do not mistake one mode for another.
Bottom-line recommendation
For a Copilot-centered team willing to accept Preview status and local-desktop restrictions, VS Code shared canvases are the natural choice for agent-managed planning and interactive project surfaces. For a paid team that needs a defined publish-and-review workflow, saved artifacts, and reusable canvas skills, Cursor is the more complete documented option. For actual co-editing and debugging by people, add Live Share regardless of which AI editor you adopt.
