Visio-Display is a self-hosted digital signage platform for managing content, schedules, and Linux kiosk screens from a central web application. Its project documentation describes a Docker Compose server stack, tools for organizing media and campaigns, and remote client monitoring and maintenance. The documented feature set is useful for assessing fit, but it is not an independent performance or security test.

What Visio-Display does

Visio-Display is presented by maintainer Eric Tomas (Woofix) as free, open-source software under the GPL-3.0 license. Its aim is to let an organization operate signage on its own infrastructure: staff manage screens through a web application, while Linux kiosk clients load the public display view. The project lists homelabs, associations, schools, businesses, and small internal infrastructures as potential settings; these are intended audiences, not independently verified adoption data. Project repository

The scope goes beyond placing a video on a television. The maintainer describes a system for creating and scheduling content, deploying clients, checking screen status, carrying out maintenance, and managing backups and updates. Self-hosting offers control over where the application and its data run, while also making the operator responsible for running and maintaining the server.

How the platform is put together

The documented server uses Python with Flask and Gunicorn for the web application, PostgreSQL for persistent application and account data, and Redis with RQ for caching and background jobs. Docker Compose is the documented deployment approach, and the repository’s quick start lists Docker and Docker Compose as requirements. Project repository

Manual Docker Compose setup is also documented. Installation steps and security recommendations can change, so use the current repository instructions rather than relying on an older walkthrough.

Managing screens, media, and schedules

Operators can create named screens and give each one its own media list, item order, active state, display duration, and schedule. The project describes libraries for images, video, and PDFs, as well as ordered playlists with defined durations. Scheduling options include date- and time-based programming, media groups, and temporary priority campaigns that yield back to the regular schedule when they end. Project repository

Announcements, menus, and alerts

Repository documentation describes priority alerts, an announcement editor with a 16:9 canvas that exports a 1920×1080 PNG, and menu-creation workflows. These tools address common signage needs such as urgent messages, designed announcements, and recurring menu content. The dimensions describe the editor’s exported image, not a guarantee that every display will show it identically.

Preparing video and PDF assets

The repository says video encoding runs asynchronously and includes automatic H.264 re-encoding. PDFs are converted to images for display. These are documented processing features, not a guarantee that every file, codec, or device will work without adjustment; check the current project guidance and validate representative assets on the intended screens.

Linux kiosk clients and hardware

Visio-Display documents remote Linux kiosk setup over SSH, including configuring autologin, protecting the display URL, assigning a screen name, and reporting client heartbeats. Raspberry Pi kiosk mode is given as an example, with Chromium launched fullscreen against the public display URL. The project does not establish a required Pi model, memory size, or tested hardware bundle. Project repository

In practice, a deployment needs a server for the application and a player device connected to each display. A screen, suitable player, HDMI cable, power supply, and network access are ordinary signage considerations, but the reviewed project material does not specify particular models or universal hardware requirements. Confirm compatibility for the operating system, browser, video formats, and display setup you intend to use.

Monitoring and remote operations

The maintainer says clients report status, system information, and screenshots, and can be managed with remote actions such as restart, shutdown, reinstall, and update. The maintainer’s overview describes the first heartbeat as arriving approximately 15 seconds after startup, subsequent heartbeats every 30 seconds, and a client being marked offline after five minutes without one. These are descriptions of the implementation, not independently measured monitoring guarantees or service-level commitments. Maintainer overview and project materials

Access control, backups, and security responsibilities

The maintainer lists user roles and permissions, activity logs, separate operation tokens, manual and scheduled backups, web-interface restore, optional SMB backup copies, a controlled server update mechanism, and an API for client communication and administrative actions. The repository also describes access controls, backup handling, server updates, and a security-hardening guide. These are documented capabilities and guidance; they do not establish that an installation is independently audited or secure by default. Project repository

Backups deserve particular care: the project notes that archives may include sensitive material such as environment configuration. Treat backup files as secrets, restrict who can access them, and consider the security of any separate storage location. Before relying on a restore plan, verify the backup process and recovery steps in the environment where the platform will run.

How to decide whether it fits

There is no independent head-to-head test or ranking establishing how Visio-Display performs against other signage platforms. Assess it against your own operating needs rather than assuming that a feature list proves comparative superiority.

  • Hosting and data control: Decide whether you want to run the application and manage its data on infrastructure you control.
  • Operational skills: Account for the ability to deploy and maintain Docker Compose services and Linux kiosk clients.
  • Screen structure: Check whether named screens with independent playlists, timing, and schedules match how your locations operate.
  • Programming needs: Consider whether date- and time-based schedules, media groups, priority alerts, and temporary campaigns cover your content workflow.
  • Player compatibility: Validate the Linux device, browser, and media formats you plan to use; Raspberry Pi is an example in the documentation, not a prescribed model.
  • Ongoing support: Decide whether your team can monitor clients, apply updates, handle backups, and test recovery when a player or server fails.

What the available evidence does—and does not—establish

The project materials document an architecture and a broad set of content, client, and operational features. They do not provide named market statistics, reliability or performance benchmarks, independent test results, or a comparative ranking. Treat descriptions of features and implementation behavior as project claims, and test the system with your own content and hardware before depending on it for an important display network.
