Neither Visa nor Mastercard is accepted at every merchant in mainland China. Acceptance depends on the individual merchant, terminal, and network connection, so check for the matching logo and ask before ordering when payment matters. For a reliable trip, carry an eligible Visa or Mastercard linked to Alipay or WeChat Pay, keep a second payment method, and maintain access to RMB cash.
There is no evidence of a universal Visa-versus-Mastercard cost winner. Your issuing bank’s foreign-transaction and ATM terms, the exchange-rate choice at checkout, and any mobile-wallet fees can matter more than the logo on the card.
What the Visa-versus-Mastercard answer means in mainland China
This comparison covers everyday travel in mainland China. It does not establish acceptance conditions in every city or at every business, and it does not cover issuer-specific card terms. Visa and Mastercard are payment networks; the bank that issued your card sets many of the charges and may decide whether a transaction is approved.

- Use the card directly where the merchant displays the relevant international-network logo and confirms that it is taking foreign cards.
- Use a linked mobile wallet for QR payments when the app, your issuer, and the card all qualify.
- Keep another card, a cash plan, or both. A network logo is not a guarantee that a particular terminal is connected or that the merchant will accept an overseas card.
China’s central-government visitor guidance names both Visa and Mastercard as cards that may be linked to mobile payment apps and says foreign cards can be used for China Railway online tickets. The same guidance tells visitors to ask hotels in advance whether international cards are accepted.

Where a foreign Visa or Mastercard is most likely to work
Direct payment at a merchant
At a point of sale, look for the Visa or Mastercard mark on the terminal, counter signage, or payment instructions. Shanghai municipal guidance tells overseas visitors to look for the corresponding logo and ask staff when no logo is displayed. This is a useful check, not a promise that every shop, restaurant, taxi, or terminal will approve the transaction.
Ask before consuming a service when a decline would be difficult to resolve. A simple question such as “Do you accept an overseas Visa or Mastercard?” lets staff check the terminal rather than discovering a problem after the bill is issued. Some businesses display several logos but have a terminal configured for only one of them, so confirm the actual card you intend to use.
Hotels and other accommodation
Hotel policies vary by property and by booking channel. The central-government visitor guide specifically advises foreign travelers to inquire in advance whether Visa, Mastercard, or another international card is accepted. Contact the hotel before arrival and ask about both the room deposit and the final bill; a property may handle those steps differently.
Save the hotel’s reply or note its payment instructions with your reservation details. If the hotel requires a card pre-authorisation, ask whether an overseas card is supported and whether the deposit is released automatically after checkout.
China Railway online tickets
The official visitor guidance identifies China Railway’s English website or app as a documented use case for foreign bank cards. It says tickets can be purchased with foreign or Chinese bank cards or with mobile payment apps. This confirms that channel as an option; it does not mean every ticket office, third-party booking path, or card brand will behave identically.
Complete account setup and card verification before a time-sensitive journey. If an online payment fails, keep enough time to try the other supported payment method shown by the railway service rather than waiting until departure day.

Major tourism venues covered by a specific acceptance rule
A 2024 government report says domestic and overseas cards must be accepted at these specified categories:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Three-star-and-above tourist hotels
- National 4A and 5A attractions
- National and provincial tourist resorts
- National tourism and leisure districts
The rule is limited to those named categories. It should not be expanded into a claim that every merchant in a tourist city, every attraction, or every hotel accepts Visa and Mastercard.
Small shops, taxis, and local terminals
The available official guidance does not provide a nationwide acceptance percentage, and it does not prove that one network has broader coverage in every travel scenario. Smaller businesses may rely primarily on QR payments or domestic processing. When you cannot see a network mark, ask before the transaction and be ready to use your wallet or cash fallback.
Using Alipay or WeChat Pay with an overseas card
Linking a qualifying international Visa or Mastercard to a mobile wallet can be more useful than relying on a physical card at each counter. Official guidance describes both Alipay and WeChat Pay as services that can accept eligible overseas cards, subject to card-issuer authorization and each platform’s terms.
Set up the wallet before you travel
- Install the current Alipay or WeChat app from your device’s official app store and create an account with the phone number and identity details requested by the service.
- Open the wallet’s bank-card or payment-card section and choose the option to add an international card.
- Enter the card details exactly as held by the issuer. Complete any one-time verification, text-message code, or 3-D Secure approval requested by the bank.
- Read the displayed service fee, transaction limit, supported-card notice, and identity-verification status before saving the card.
- Make a small, non-critical payment or use the app’s verification flow while you still have access to your bank and a second payment method.
An issuer can refuse the binding even when the card carries a supported logo. A successful link also does not guarantee that every merchant’s QR code accepts an overseas card.

At checkout, the merchant may present a QR code for you to scan, or you may display your own payment code for the merchant’s scanner. Keep the physical card available in case the QR flow requests an additional verification step or the merchant’s code is not enabled for international cards.

Published fee and limit guidance
A National Immigration Administration guide dated November 12, 2024 describes linked international-card QR payments as having no additional service fee for a payment of RMB 200 or less and a 3% service fee above RMB 200. The same guide states limits of US$5,000 per transaction and US$50,000 per year for linked international cards.
Those are dated public guidance figures, not a guarantee that every account has the same schedule in 2026. Check the fee and limit shown in your app immediately before travel and again if the app prompts you during payment. The platform may calculate the fee on the transaction amount and may show it separately before confirmation.
A reported WeChat Pay promotion
A Beijing municipal government report published March 26, 2026 describes a promotion for first-time international-card linkers. It says the 3% fee was waived for daily transactions under RMB 1,000 for 60 consecutive days from the first transaction, with a maximum saving of RMB 30 per transaction. The report also mentions the under-RMB-200 waiver.
This is an eligibility-based, dated promotion rather than a permanent rule. Check the offer in the current WeChat Pay app, including its start date, qualifying card, transaction definition, and end date. Do not budget on the assumption that the promotion is still active.
Wallet failure points and recovery
- Card binding is rejected: Contact the issuer to authorize the wallet binding and verify that overseas e-commerce or international transactions are enabled.
- The app requests identity verification: Finish the requested verification before relying on the wallet for transport, accommodation, or a large purchase.
- A QR payment is declined: Ask whether the merchant’s code supports international cards, then try the other linked wallet, a physical card, or cash.
- The fee is higher than expected: Stop before confirmation, inspect the fee line and exchange-rate display, and use another payment route if the total is unacceptable.
- Your phone or data connection fails: Carry a physical card and RMB cash; do not make the wallet your only means of payment.
How Visa and Mastercard fees are actually determined
The network logo alone does not determine the final amount debited from your account. Separate the cost into the conversion rate, issuer charges, merchant or ATM conversion, and any wallet service fee.
Network exchange-rate tools are estimates
Visa and Mastercard each publish currency-conversion tools. They are useful for estimating a transaction from RMB into your card’s billing currency, but neither tool promises the exact amount that will settle. Mastercard says its displayed rate and amount are indicative, the issuing bank may choose not to use that rate, and the bank may add fees. Visa likewise describes its calculator result as an indication; its developer reference notes that card rates can differ from the actual settlement rate.

The rate can also depend on when the transaction is processed rather than the instant you tap or insert the card. Treat the network calculator as a comparison reference, not as a quotation from your bank.
Issuer charges
Your bank may apply a foreign-transaction fee, a separate currency-conversion markup, an ATM fee, or a cash-advance fee. The amount depends on the exact card and account. The available evidence does not identify one Visa fee or one Mastercard fee that applies to all issuers.
Before departure, open the card’s tariff or schedule of charges and record:
- Foreign-purchase or international-transaction fee
- Exchange-rate markup or spread
- ATM withdrawal fee and any daily limit
- Cash-advance fee and interest treatment
- Fraud alerts, travel notices, or overseas-use controls
Dynamic currency conversion at a merchant or ATM
A terminal or ATM may offer to charge your home currency instead of RMB. If you accept, the merchant or ATM operator performs the conversion, so the Visa or Mastercard network rate does not apply. Mastercard’s guidance explicitly says its conversion rate does not apply when the merchant or ATM operator converts the transaction.
Ask which rate and fee will be used before accepting the offer. If the screen gives a choice and you want your card network and issuer to perform the conversion, select RMB rather than your home currency. Confirm the choice on the receipt or final screen.
Mobile-wallet service fees
A wallet charge is separate from the card issuer’s own fee. A 3% app service fee, for example, can be added even if your card has no foreign-transaction fee. Conversely, a card issuer can charge its own fee even when the app shows no service fee. Evaluate the complete amount displayed by the app and the amount later posted by your bank.

Visa versus Mastercard: what can and cannot be compared
| Comparison point | What is established | What you should verify |
|---|---|---|
| Merchant acceptance | Both brands appear in official visitor guidance, but direct acceptance depends on the merchant, terminal, and network mark. | Look for the logo at the point of sale and ask hotels or other critical providers in advance. |
| Final purchase cost | Network calculators are indicative; issuer fees and merchant conversion can change the billed amount. | Check your card’s foreign-transaction terms and whether the terminal offers RMB or home-currency billing. |
| Mobile wallets | Official guidance supports linking eligible Visa and Mastercard cards to Alipay and WeChat Pay, subject to authorization and platform rules. | Confirm current eligibility, verification, service fee, transaction limit, and annual limit in the app. |
| Cash access | Official guidance describes RMB withdrawals at ATMs displaying the corresponding card-network logo. | Check the ATM logo, withdrawal limit, operator surcharge, issuer fee, and whether the transaction is treated as a cash advance. |
| Overall winner | No evidence establishes that one network is universally more accepted or cheaper for every traveler. | Compare the exact cards, not just the network names. |
Using an ATM and keeping an RMB cash fallback
Official visitor guidance describes exchanging foreign currency for RMB and withdrawing RMB at ATMs that display the matching bank-card network logo. The network logo indicates compatibility, not a guarantee that the ATM has cash, supports your card, or will charge no fee.
- Check your issuer’s overseas ATM and cash-advance terms before leaving.
- At the ATM, verify that the displayed network matches your card and read the operator fee and exchange-rate screens.
- If offered a home-currency conversion, compare it with the RMB option and decline the operator conversion when you want the network and issuer to set the rate.
- Withdraw a sensible amount for your itinerary rather than repeatedly paying a fixed ATM fee.
- Keep the receipt and monitor the posted transaction in your banking app.
Carry enough RMB for a small purchase, local transport, or a payment while your phone is offline. Do not carry all travel funds in one place; separate your backup card and cash from your primary wallet.
A practical payment plan before departure
- Choose the card with the better terms. Compare the foreign-transaction, conversion, ATM, and cash-advance fees on the specific Visa and Mastercard products you hold. The network logo is not a substitute for this comparison.
- Call or message the issuer if required. Ask whether overseas purchases, ATM withdrawals, and wallet binding are enabled and whether fraud controls could block China transactions.
- Link and verify a card. Set up Alipay or WeChat Pay, complete issuer verification, and review the app’s current limits and fees.
- Confirm high-consequence payments. Ask your hotel about international-card acceptance and review the payment options for any China Railway booking.
- Prepare two fallbacks. Carry a second payment card and a modest RMB cash reserve. Store them separately from the primary card and phone.
- Save support details. Keep your issuer’s international support number and the wallet’s account-recovery information available offline.
What to do when a payment is declined
At a shop or restaurant
- Ask the cashier whether the terminal accepts an overseas Visa or Mastercard and whether another terminal is available.
- Check that the card is unlocked, has available credit, and is approved for international transactions.
- Try inserting or swiping only when the terminal instructs you; some terminals handle contactless and chip transactions differently.
- If it still fails, use the linked wallet or a second card, or pay with RMB cash.
At a hotel
Ask whether the problem is the room deposit, the final bill, or the terminal itself. Request the property’s accepted payment methods and contact your issuer while the reservation details are available.
In a mobile wallet
Read the decline message, confirm that the card remains linked, and check whether the amount exceeds the app’s displayed limit or triggers additional verification. Do not repeatedly retry a blocked card; multiple attempts can trigger issuer fraud controls. Move to your backup method and resolve the account issue later.
If you already own one of these cards, there is no evidence-based reason to replace it solely because of the network logo. Choose the card whose issuer terms are better for your trip and make sure it can be used through a wallet or ATM if needed. If you have both, take both when practical. A second network can provide a useful fallback if a particular terminal, issuer connection, or fraud system rejects the first card, although it still does not guarantee acceptance at every merchant. Prioritize these characteristics in order: No nationwide survey in the available official material states what percentage of Chinese merchants accept Visa or Mastercard. The material also does not prove that either network is always cheaper or has broader coverage in every city. Acceptance rules for specified major tourism venues, railway ticketing, hotels, ATMs, and mobile wallets are separate use cases and should not be generalized. App terms, issuer fees, and promotions can change. The November 2024 wallet guidance and the March 2026 promotion report are useful reference points, but the fee and limit shown in your current app and card agreement control your transaction. Verify them immediately before travel. Recommended Free Tools Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change.
