Virtual try-on can show how a product might look on you or in your space, but it is not a universal digital fitting room. Camera-based augmented reality (AR) places a digital object in a live view; newer AI tools can generate an image of how clothing or makeup might appear. Neither kind of preview, by itself, proves that a garment fits or that eyewear meets your prescription needs.
What virtual try-on means in online shopping
Retailers use “virtual try-on” for several different experiences. Some overlay a product on a live camera image; others use an uploaded photo, a model image, or a generated visualization. Related room-placement AR shows a product in a shopper’s surroundings rather than on their body. The shared goal is to reduce uncertainty about appearance or context—not to guarantee physical fit.
- Camera-based AR: places a digital product over a live camera view, such as a frame on a face or furniture in a room.
- AI-generated visualization: produces an image suggesting how an outfit or makeup look might appear. It is a generated preview, not a measurement of fit.
- Model-based visualization: displays clothing on a model, potentially giving shoppers a range of body representations to compare.
Shopify describes AR in ecommerce, including product-page experiences and room placement, while its virtual-shopping guide discusses AI try-on and related approaches. These categories overlap in purpose, but they do not establish one shared accuracy standard. Shopify’s AR ecommerce guide and Shopify’s virtual-shopping guide offer examples of the broader landscape.
How the experience differs by product
| Shopping use | What the shopper may see | What the preview does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Clothing | Garments shown on models or an AI-generated visualization based on a shopper’s photo. | Whether the item will fit, drape, or feel as it appears in the image. |
| Makeup | Simulated shades or a coordinated makeup look on a mobile device. | Exact shade performance under every lighting condition or on every display. |
| Eyewear | Frames rendered on a shopper’s face, sometimes using facial scanning and other optical-shopping inputs. | Prescription suitability or a substitute for optical measurements and professional guidance. |
| Furniture and home goods | A product placed into a view of the shopper’s room to help judge visual context and approximate scale. | Exact fit in the room or a guarantee that dimensions, color, and appearance will match in person. |
Clothing: appearance is not fit
Google’s March 5, 2025 announcement described apparel try-on across real models ranging from XXS to XXL and a feature for US shoppers to upload a photo for apparel visualization. The announcement also described “vision match,” which turns a text description into visual ideas and shoppable products. These are dated descriptions of features and scope; availability may change, so check the live shopping experience. Google’s announcement attributes some shopping statements to a US online consumer survey commissioned from Ipsos: 2,003 adults aged 18 or older, surveyed February 3–7, 2025.

Makeup: a simulated look can aid discovery
The same Google announcement described a US mobile experience for trying on and shopping makeup looks assembled from multiple products, with rollout beginning in March 2025. A simulation can help with visual exploration, but it should not be treated as a promise that a shade will look identical in different lighting or on every screen.
Eyewear: visualizing frames is only one part of ordering
Walmart’s January 30, 2024 announcement described an optical try-on using 3D frame data and algorithms. Its launch description included more than 750 eyewear options, facial scanning, prescription upload, pupillary-distance capture, and online ordering. The frame count was a launch figure, not a current catalog count. A face preview can help compare styles, while optical measurements and prescription requirements remain separate considerations. Walmart’s launch announcement is the source for those details.

Furniture: place-in-room AR adds context
Room-placement AR shifts the question from “How might this look on me?” to “How might this look here?” Shopify describes using AR to view products in a shopper’s own environment, which can help with visual context and approximate scale. It is still a visualization: shoppers should check listed dimensions and room measurements rather than relying on the image alone.

Available figures point to use of these tools, but they measure different things and should not be combined into a single trend or treated as proof that try-on causes sales.

- 31% usage: Ryder reported that 31% of surveyed US online shoppers used virtual try-on or visualization tools. Its March 2026 survey covered 1,160 US online shoppers; the figure is one category within a survey of AI-assisted shopping tools, not a global estimate. Ryder’s 2026 study.
- 90% of try-ons on phones: Genlook reported that 90% of try-ons in its dataset occurred on phones. This is first-party data from 577 Shopify stores using Genlook between April 16 and June 30, 2026, not a category-wide device benchmark. Genlook’s Q2 2026 report.
- 29.2% versus 9.4% add-to-cart rates: Genlook compared sessions with a try-on, which had a 29.2% add-to-cart rate, with sessions without one, at 9.4%. This is an observational session-level comparison from that provider’s platform. Try-on users may be more engaged or self-selected, so the figures do not show that try-on caused the difference.
Retailer feature announcements establish that a feature was introduced; they do not by themselves demonstrate customer outcomes. Shopify’s AR guide also presents named brand case studies, but their reported results belong to those cases and should not be generalized to every AR implementation.
How to judge a try-on before relying on it
- Identify what is being visualized. Is the tool showing makeup, a garment, eyewear, or a product in a room? A preview of one category does not answer questions about another.
- Check the input method. A live camera overlay, an uploaded photo, a model image, and room placement produce different kinds of previews. Look for whether the displayed result is a real-time overlay or a generated image.
- Separate appearance from measurement. Use a garment’s size chart and measurements for clothing; check frame measurements, prescription requirements, and optical guidance for glasses; compare product dimensions with your room for furniture.
- Confirm current availability. Features can depend on the retailer, country, device, catalog, and rollout. Google’s cited apparel and makeup descriptions were US-focused in its March 2025 announcement; Walmart’s eyewear information described its January 2024 launch.
- Review photo handling. Before uploading a face or body image, read the retailer’s current privacy and image-handling policy. The examples cited here do not provide a complete cross-provider privacy comparison.
- Keep ordinary purchase safeguards. Check return terms and product specifications; the preview is an aid to visual judgment, not a replacement for those details.
What virtual try-on changes—and what it does not
Virtual try-on gives online shoppers another way to assess style and visual context before buying. Its value depends on the specific implementation: a generated outfit preview, live frame overlay, makeup simulation, and room-placement view answer different questions. The evidence cited here documents adoption and particular retailer or provider experiences, but it does not establish a universal accuracy standard or guarantee better conversion, fewer returns, or a correct fit.
