Neither format is proven to be universally more accurate. A kiosk and a phone can both produce a convincing overlay while getting garment fit or size wrong. The useful comparison is between named systems under the same conditions, with separate measurements for tracking, visual appearance, fit prediction, and size recommendation. Existing studies provide limited, task-specific findings—not a kiosk-versus-phone accuracy ranking.
“Accurate” can mean four different things
Virtual try-on discussions often treat accuracy as one property. In practice, a system can excel at one layer and fail at another. Define the outcome before comparing a fitting mirror with a smartphone app.
| Accuracy layer | What to ask | How to measure it |
|---|---|---|
| Tracking and registration | Does the virtual garment remain attached to the shopper as they turn, move, or change distance? | Record alignment error during specified poses and movements, including brief occlusions. |
| Visual representation | Are color, cut, surface details, drape, body occlusion, and garment boundaries shown convincingly? | Use a defined rating rubric or image-comparison protocol for the products being tested. |
| Fit prediction | Does the rendering indicate how the real garment hangs, stretches, or feels on that body? | Compare the prediction with a controlled physical try-on or detailed body and garment measurements. |
| Size recommendation | Does the system select the size that the shopper can actually wear? | Compare the recommendation with the correct size established through physical fitting or a validated measurement procedure. |
A larger display does not automatically improve registration or fit prediction, and a personal phone camera does not automatically make either result better. Camera geometry, lighting, calibration, pose, body and garment data, and the software model can dominate the outcome.
What the available studies actually establish
An apparel AR experiment found a limited positive result
Chung, Shin, and Baytar conducted a within-subject quasi-experiment in which participants considered an augmented-reality dress try-on and a physical try-on. In that specific scenario, the authors report that AR conveyed dress size and color accurately and that participants could select the right garment size.

That result is bounded. The participants were female students in North America, the experience used one stimulus, and the design did not compare a store kiosk with a smartphone implementation. It therefore cannot establish that kiosk AR or phone AR is more accurate for other garments, populations, brands, or software systems.
A Seoul field study describes retail experiences, not fit error
Wu and colleagues reported a qualitative fashion-retail technology study involving 14 university participants in Seoul. Participants experienced AR fitting mirrors for eyewear and apparel, along with a separate mobile-based virtual-reality cosmetics experience. The activities were not a matched test of phone AR against kiosk AR, and the outcome was user perception rather than a measured difference between predicted and actual fit.
The small convenience sample and category-specific tasks limit how far those observations can be generalized. They are useful for understanding deployment and user experience, not for declaring a more accurate device class.
A 2022 fitting-system study identifies evaluation attributes
A Korean Association of Human Ecology study analyzed 173 usable responses about perceived technological attributes of an AR virtual-fitting system based on an AR mirror experiment and survey. The attributes were grouped under representation fidelity and interactivity. Those categories help organize a test plan: shoppers need the image to represent the product well and to respond naturally to their actions.

The study did not benchmark mirror accuracy against phone AR. Perceived fidelity is also not the same as measured fit or size error, so a high perception score should not be presented as proof that a garment will fit.
The 2026 model warns about fit representation, not device superiority
Li, Yao, Wang, and Guo’s 2026 article in Information Systems Research examines retail adoption and market outcomes with a queueing-game-theoretic model. It does not run a camera or tracking experiment. The authors write: “Despite these advancements, AR technologies often fall short of providing an accurate representation of how clothing fits, resulting in potential mismatches between consumer expectations and the actual product.”
That sentence is a caution about fit representation. It is not evidence that kiosks are less accurate than phones, or that phones are less accurate than kiosks. The model’s conclusions depend on assumptions about channels, pricing, and market behavior rather than a measured form-factor error rate.

A vendor announcement illustrates a separate measurement layer
In a 2020 company announcement, MySize said its measurement service had been integrated into SWEET FIT’s AR fitting-mirror platform to support brand-specific size selection. This is a historical, vendor-reported integration. It shows that measurement and recommendation services can sit alongside an AR display; it does not independently verify current availability, performance, or accuracy.

Why the kiosk-versus-phone question has no universal answer
Camera geometry and calibration
A kiosk can use a fixed camera position, a known viewing area, and controlled distance. Those conditions may make repeatable calibration easier. A phone is moved by each shopper, so distance, tilt, lens choice, and hand shake vary. Those are engineering trade-offs, not demonstrated accuracy results. A well-calibrated phone system can outperform a poorly calibrated kiosk, while a carefully installed kiosk can be more consistent than an uncontrolled phone session.
Lighting, background, and occlusion
Shadows, backlighting, reflective surfaces, patterned backgrounds, and people passing behind the shopper can affect body segmentation and garment boundaries. A store installation may control lighting and background, but its entrance, mirrors, racks, or crowds can still create interference. Phone users encounter a wider range of rooms and daylight conditions. Compare systems in the environments in which customers will actually use them rather than assuming either setting is clean.
Body and garment data
Registration can look stable even when the garment model is wrong. Accurate size advice requires product measurements, stretch and construction information, a body representation, and a mapping between the two. Missing sleeve, shoulder, rise, ease, or fabric-behavior data can produce an incorrect fit impression on either device. The display is only one part of the pipeline.
Pose and movement
Many try-on systems perform best while the shopper faces the camera in a known pose. Turning sideways, crossing arms, holding a bag, or stepping outside the calibrated area tests tracking and occlusion handling. A comparison should specify the movements that matter for the decision instead of reporting a single still image.

Population and product coverage
Results may change across body shapes, heights, sizes, skin tones, hair, mobility patterns, and clothing categories. A fitted dress, loose jacket, eyewear frame, and cosmetics overlay create different technical problems. A test on one dress cannot support claims about all apparel, and a result for one demographic cannot be assumed to represent every shopper.
How to run a fair kiosk-versus-phone accuracy test
Retailers, researchers, and product teams can obtain a meaningful answer by comparing specific implementations rather than device labels. Keep the product catalog, participants, tasks, and ground truth the same.
- Name the systems and versions. Record the kiosk hardware and camera arrangement, the phone model and operating-system version, the AR application build, and the garment or body-data version. If the software changes, treat it as a new test condition.
- Define the decision to be supported. Decide whether the objective is visual confidence, a correct size, acceptable sleeve or hem placement, or a return-risk reduction. A system can be suitable for color and style preview without predicting physical fit.
- Build a matched product set. Use the same garments, colors, sizes, and 3D or image assets on both implementations. Document fabric stretch, construction, and measurements when those inputs are available.
- Recruit a coverage sample. Include the body sizes, shapes, skin tones, heights, and mobility conditions relevant to the store or audience. Record exclusions and missing groups; do not silently generalize beyond the sample.
- Standardize setup. Specify lighting, camera height, shopper distance, background, clothing worn underneath, pose instructions, and calibration steps. For the phone condition, test the normal range of hand-held distance and angle rather than forcing a tripod-only setup unless that is the real use case.
- Capture movement sequences. Measure a front pose, side turn, walk or step, arm movement, and any product-specific action. Note when the garment loses alignment, flickers, clips through the body, or disappears during occlusion.
- Collect ground truth. For fit and size, establish the outcome with physical try-on, a qualified fitting procedure, or documented body and product measurements. Do not use shopper preference alone as a substitute for fit ground truth.
- Log failures, not only averages. Record lighting failures, calibration retries, tracking loss, unsupported garments, and incorrect size recommendations. Report how often a shopper could not complete the task and why.
- Analyze by subgroup and product. Break out results by garment type, size range, body group, lighting condition, and movement. An overall average can conceal a serious failure for a particular category.
- Report uncertainty and scope. State the sample, dates, software versions, conditions, and error definitions. A result applies only to those tested systems and conditions unless later validation supports a broader claim.
Metrics that make “more accurate” testable
| Question | Example metric | Interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| Does the overlay stay aligned? | Pixel or landmark displacement during a defined movement sequence; percentage of frames within a stated tolerance. | Lower displacement and fewer lost frames indicate better registration under that test. |
| Does the garment look like the product? | Rater scores for color, silhouette, details, occlusion, and drape using a fixed scale. | Separates visual fidelity from physical fit. |
| Is the recommended size correct? | Agreement with the size established by physical fitting or a validated measurement protocol. | Report accuracy by garment and body subgroup, not just one aggregate. |
| Does the prediction match actual fit? | Differences in measured ease, key lengths, or pass/fail fit judgments between virtual prediction and physical garment. | Shows whether the system predicts the decision shoppers care about. |
| Can shoppers complete the task? | Completion rate, calibration retries, time to usable result, and abandonment causes. | Captures operational reliability that an image-quality score misses. |
Use confidence intervals or other uncertainty reporting when sample size permits. If a study has only a small convenience sample, present the result as exploratory. The reviewed evidence contains no directly comparable numerical kiosk-versus-phone accuracy result, so there is no defensible universal percentage to quote.

Potential operational advantages
- A fixed installation can keep camera height, field of view, and shopper distance within a designed range.
- Store staff can explain calibration, reposition the shopper, and help with an unusual garment or pose.
- A larger shared display can make details easier for a group or associate to inspect, which is a usability characteristic rather than proof of fit accuracy.
- The retailer can control lighting, background, and network connectivity more directly than in a customer’s home.
Potential failure modes
- Incorrect mounting height or camera angle can systematically distort every session.
- Changing store lighting, glare, crowds, and displays can undermine segmentation.
- A narrow calibrated zone may produce good results only when the shopper stands exactly where instructed.
- Staff assistance can improve completion while masking a setup that would fail for an unattended shopper.
Validate the actual installation after construction, after camera movement, and after lighting or layout changes. Do not infer accuracy from screen size or from the fact that the system is in a store.

What a phone-based system can improve—and what it cannot guarantee
Potential deployment advantages
- The shopper can use the same experience at home, in a store, or across multiple sessions.
- A phone camera and motion sensors provide a personal capture setup without a dedicated fixture.
- Software can be updated centrally, although every supported phone and operating-system combination still needs validation.
- The shopper can compare products privately and share a result, which may improve convenience without changing physical-fit accuracy.
Potential failure modes
- Hand-held distance, lens selection, tilt, and movement vary from session to session.
- Older phones, different camera intrinsics, thermal limits, or operating-system changes can alter tracking behavior.
- Home lighting, mirrors, clutter, and narrow spaces can reduce segmentation quality.
- Users may trust a polished overlay even when the garment data or size model is incomplete.
Publish clear setup guidance and show when tracking confidence is low. A phone experience should not silently convert a visual preview into a size guarantee.
Choosing the right evaluation for a retail goal
| Retail goal | Primary evidence to collect | What not to claim |
|---|---|---|
| Color and style exploration | Color fidelity, silhouette, detail visibility, and tracking during normal viewing. | Do not claim that a good style preview predicts physical fit. |
| Size selection | Agreement with physical fit or validated measurements, by garment and shopper subgroup. | Do not substitute perceived realism for size accuracy. |
| Reduced fitting-room demand | Completion, staff workload, physical try-on confirmation, and returns or exchanges tracked with appropriate controls. | Do not attribute a retail outcome to camera accuracy without measuring the fit pathway. |
| At-home convenience | Performance across supported phone models, environments, distances, and user instructions. | Do not generalize a single flagship-phone test to all phones. |
| In-store assisted selling | Repeatability after staff calibration, recovery from tracking loss, and consistency across fixtures. | Do not assume one successful demonstration represents unattended shoppers. |
Questions to ask a vendor or internal engineering team
- Which accuracy layer is being reported: registration, appearance, fit, or size?
- What are the ground-truth procedures and error thresholds?
- Which garments, sizes, body groups, skin tones, and phone models were included?
- What happens when lighting, pose, distance, or occlusion falls outside the supported range?
- How are product measurements, fabric stretch, and brand-specific sizing represented?
- Can the system show a confidence state or explain why a recommendation is unavailable?
- What is the calibration and revalidation procedure after a camera, fixture, app, catalog, or operating-system change?
- Are results from a physical try-on, a user survey, a perception rating, or a model simulation? These are different kinds of evidence.
How shoppers should interpret a virtual try-on result
Treat the overlay as decision support, not as a guarantee, unless the retailer provides independently validated size evidence for that product. Check the product’s measurement chart and return policy, and use physical fitting when the garment is structured, compression-focused, unusually loose, or sensitive to shoulder, rise, sleeve, or length measurements. If the image jumps, clips, loses the body outline, or changes when you move slightly, consider the visual result unreliable for that session.
For a kiosk, follow the marked standing position and ask for recalibration if alignment drifts. For a phone, use the recommended distance and lighting, keep the lens clear, and repeat the capture if the app indicates poor tracking. These steps improve the quality of the observation; they do not turn an unvalidated system into a fit measurement instrument.

Bottom line: compare systems, not screen formats
The available evidence does not establish a universal winner between virtual try-on kiosks and phone-based AR. One apparel experiment found that AR could convey size and color and support correct size selection in a limited dress-shopping scenario, while other studies examined user perceptions, retail deployment, or economic modeling rather than matched device accuracy. The defensible question is therefore: which named system is more accurate for this garment, this shopper population, this environment, and this decision—and how was that accuracy measured?
