Short answer: a virtual try-on kiosk may process live camera frames or a still photograph to render a product preview, but there is no single “virtual try-on” data flow. Some systems process the camera feed on your device; others upload a selected image to the retailer or a technology provider. A retailer may also collect measurements, a rendered preview, product choices, or interaction records. A separate store-surveillance camera is a different system and purpose.

Before using a kiosk, read its notice, identify the retailer and technology provider, and look for the purpose, recipients, retention period, consent choice, and deletion method. Decline the camera or try-on prompt if you do not agree. If the kiosk offers a delete control, use it, then ask whether deletion covers the original image, generated preview, measurements, and copies held by processors.

What a virtual try-on kiosk can collect

The camera input is only one part of the data path. Depending on the implementation, the system may handle several separate items:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Live camera frames: a stream used to place glasses, makeup, clothing, or another product over your image.
  • A still photograph: a picture captured by the kiosk or selected from another device.
  • Derived measurements: estimates such as facial dimensions, skin tone, body position, or fit-related measurements.
  • A rendered preview: the composite image showing the product on you.
  • Product and interaction data: the item or variant selected, time of use, consent choice, and possibly technical logs.

Do not assume that processing a face means the system identifies you. “Facial scanning,” “facial analysis,” “biometric information,” and “facial recognition” are different descriptions. A notice should tell you which operation is performed. For example, one retailer describes facial scanning for an eyeglass feature as biometric information, while a kiosk provider says its image is not subjected to face recognition or biometric analysis.

Who may receive the data

The retailer and the kiosk company can have different roles. Corlen’s agreement, for example, says the retailer is the controller and Corlen is the processor where applicable data-protection law applies. Its stated purpose is to process shopper and garment images to create a preview. The notice at a particular store may name a different provider, processor, or legal arrangement.

Ask for the names of every recipient, not just the brand displayed on the kiosk. A retailer may operate the customer-facing experience while a technology vendor performs the image processing. A further processing engine may receive an uploaded photo. If a notice names only a “service provider,” ask which company that means and what copy it retains.

Why two kiosks can handle the same photo differently

“Virtual try-on” describes an outcome, not a universal architecture. The following patterns illustrate the questions to ask rather than industry-wide rules.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Implementation Input and processing What the retailer or provider may receive Retention information
On-device real-time AR Live camera feed is processed on the shopper’s device. The try-on vendor may receive no camera feed, although the retailer could still collect separate interaction or purchase data. Must be stated by the specific retailer and app; on-device processing alone does not answer every logging question.
Uploaded-photo mode A selected or captured still image is uploaded to a vendor and possibly forwarded to a processing engine. The uploaded image, product selection, and generated result may be available to those services. Retention can differ by provider. TryOn’s documentation does not state a retention period for its processing engine.
Measurement or biometric feature The system analyzes facial or other physical characteristics to recommend or render a product. Measurements or information described as biometric may be created in addition to the preview. Retailer policy controls the period. One eyeglass example states deletion within 48 hours.
Separate store surveillance Ceiling, entrance, checkout, or other cameras operate for security, loss prevention, operations, or design. Images may be collected independently of a shopper’s decision to use try-on. Retention and access follow the store-surveillance notice, not the try-on notice.

Documented examples show why the notice matters

Walmart’s separate disclosures

Walmart describes optional virtual try-on experiences and says consent is obtained before use for the experiences covered by its notice. For its eyeglass feature, it describes facial scanning as biometric information and says that biometric data is deleted within 48 hours. That is a retailer-stated period for that feature, not a universal kiosk standard.

Walmart separately says images created through makeup try-on are not stored. It also says measurements and images may be shared with Perfect Corp. These statements apply to the identified Walmart features; they do not establish how another retailer’s kiosk works.

Corlen’s kiosk notice

Corlen’s notice, updated August 2026, says kiosk photos are automatically deleted after two hours, or immediately when a shopper taps “Delete My Photos.” It says the image is used to generate the try-on result and that Corlen does not run face recognition or biometric analysis on it. Those are the provider’s representations and are not an independent audit.

If a kiosk uses this type of delete control, check its scope. “Delete my photos” may refer to the source image while a generated preview, measurement, log, or processor copy follows a different rule. Ask the attendant or privacy contact to confirm each data category.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

TryOn’s two processing paths

TryOn documents a real-time AR path in which the camera feed is processed on the device and is not uploaded to TryOn. It also documents an AI Swap path in which a selected photo is uploaded to TryOn and forwarded to a processing engine. The documentation does not state how long that processing engine retains the image, so do not infer a retention period.

Coty’s camera-based tools

Coty’s notice says its makeup and foundation, nail, and skin-tone tools use camera images for augmented-reality applications. It notes that the information may qualify as biometric information in some jurisdictions and describes retention by processing purpose and channel. Online or app terms do not prove that a physical kiosk at a particular store uses the same flow; obtain the kiosk-specific notice.

How to opt out before the camera captures an image

  1. Read the notice before starting. Look at the kiosk screen, sign, QR-linked policy, or posted privacy statement. Record the retailer, try-on provider, purpose, recipients, retention period, deletion contact, and whether consent is optional.
  2. Decline the camera or try-on permission. Use “Decline,” “Not now,” or the equivalent control when offered. Some retailers describe consent before use, but interfaces differ, so do not assume every kiosk presents the same prompt.
  3. Request a non-camera alternative. Ask whether staff can provide a physical sample, mirror, shade card, measurement method, or another service that does not capture an image. Also ask whether declining leaves an analytics or interaction record; the available examples do not establish one universal answer.
  4. Do not treat your phone settings as a kiosk opt-out. Revoking camera permission on your own phone does not control a retailer-owned camera. Covering a lens likewise does not opt you out of separate store cameras.
  5. Use an on-screen deletion control immediately if needed. If the kiosk displays “Delete My Photos” or a similar command, activate it before leaving and note the confirmation. Ask whether it deletes the original image, generated preview, measurements, and copies held by a provider.

How to request deletion after a session

Contact the retailer named on the kiosk notice and, if identified, the technology provider. Make the request specific enough that the recipient can locate every related record.

  • The date by which you want a written confirmation and the legal or policy basis for any data they cannot erase.

Keep the response. If the company says the kiosk did not store an image, ask whether it still retained measurements, a generated result, a consent record, or a service log. If it says a provider received the image, request that provider’s deletion route as well.

What privacy information should appear before collection

The Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) states in its UK guidance: “You must provide privacy information to people at the time you collect their personal information from them, or ahead of time.” The notice should make the purpose, recipients, retention, and available rights understandable before the camera operates.

For a kiosk, useful notice language answers these questions:

  • Is the camera feed processed locally, uploaded, or both?
  • Is the system rendering a preview only, or also measuring, recommending, or scanning?
  • Does the service perform facial recognition or merely analyze features for fit or placement?
  • Which retailer, vendor, and processor receive the image or derived data?
  • How long are source images, previews, measurements, and logs retained?
  • Is consent separate from general store terms, and can you decline without losing unrelated service?
  • What exact control or contact deletes the data?

US readers should not assume that a general privacy policy answers these kiosk-specific questions. Ask for the feature notice and the provider’s terms when the screen names a third party.

Try-on is not the same as store surveillance

Choosing an AR preview does not by itself prove that the store recognizes you or adds your face to a surveillance database. Walmart separately describes in-store cameras and automated technologies that may capture images for checkout, theft deterrence, or store design. Those systems can operate whether or not you use a try-on kiosk.

The Federal Trade Commission’s December 2023 Rite Aid announcement concerned alleged facial-recognition surveillance and a proposed settlement. That matter involved surveillance allegations, not evidence that every virtual try-on kiosk identifies shoppers. Keep the systems, purposes, and notices separate when evaluating a store.

Questions to ask staff when the notice is unclear

  • “Does this kiosk upload my image, or is the camera feed processed here?”
  • “Which company receives the image or any measurements?”
  • “Is facial recognition used, or is this only feature analysis for the preview?”
  • “How long do you retain the original image and the generated result?”
  • “Does the delete button remove processor copies and derived measurements?”
  • “Can I try the product without a camera or photo?”
  • “Who handles a later deletion request?”

If staff cannot answer, photograph or transcribe the notice (without photographing other shoppers), decline the feature, and contact the privacy address printed on it.

Common situations and the safest response

The screen asks for camera access but gives no privacy details

Do not grant access until you can identify the operator, purpose, recipients, and retention period. Ask for the written notice or choose a non-camera option.

You accepted the preview and then changed your mind

Use the kiosk’s delete command immediately. Then send a written request covering the source image, preview, measurements, logs, and processor copies. A later request may be necessary even when the kiosk claims automatic deletion.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The retailer says “nothing is stored”

Clarify whether that means no source photo, no rendered preview, no measurements, and no provider copy. A service can avoid retaining an image while still recording a consent event, product selection, or operational log.

The notice mentions biometric information

Ask what operation creates that information, whether it is used to identify you, the retention period, and the deletion procedure. Do not equate the label “biometric” with facial recognition without a statement that identification occurs.

You are concerned about cameras elsewhere in the store

Ask for the store-surveillance notice separately. Opting out of try-on does not disable entrance, checkout, security, or other operational cameras.

What regulators recommend about choice and retention

FTC staff guidance has recommended that companies explain how long images are stored, who can access them, and what rights consumers have regarding deletion. It also recommends affirmative express consent before using images or derived biometric data for a materially different purpose. These principles support asking for a clear, feature-specific notice rather than relying on a vague statement that an experience is “virtual.”

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is no universal opt-out switch established for all retailers or kiosk providers. Your practical control is to decline the feature, avoid presenting an image, use a documented delete control, and submit a targeted request to the retailer and named providers.

How to compare a kiosk’s privacy posture

When two implementations are available, compare them on the facts disclosed, not on the marketing label:

  • Processing location: live frames kept on-device versus a still image uploaded to a vendor or processor.
  • Purpose: preview rendering versus measurements, recommendations, facial scanning, or another inference.
  • Recognition: feature analysis for placement is different from identifying a person.
  • Recipients: retailer, technology vendor, and named downstream processor.
  • Retention: stated duration, deletion trigger, and whether previews and derived data are included.
  • Choice: notice before collection, separate consent, ability to decline, and an exposed deletion route.

A system with on-device processing may reduce image sharing, but it is not automatically anonymous. A system with a short stated retention period may still share the image with a processor during that period. The notice must answer the entire path.

Bottom line for shoppers

Treat every kiosk as feature-specific. Find out whether it uses live frames or an uploaded photo, what it derives, who receives it, and when each data type is deleted. Decline the camera when the answers or choice are unacceptable. If you already used it, invoke the kiosk’s delete control and send a written request that names the original image, generated preview, measurements, logs, and processor copies. Separately review the store’s surveillance notice, because opting out of virtual try-on does not opt you out of unrelated cameras.
