Virgin Australia’s current international travel insurance has two levels: Travel Safe and Travel Safe Plus. Both list unlimited overseas medical expenses, but Travel Safe Plus adds substantial benefits for luggage, travel delays, rental-car excess, insolvency and other costs. Whether that broader cover is worth paying for depends on your trip, selected cancellation amount, health and activities—not just the plan name or premium. This review uses the policy wording for policies issued on or after 25 March 2026; check that date against your Certificate of Insurance.
Which policy and plan does this review cover?
The current policy document combines Travel Safe International and Travel Safe Plus International, but its plan names are simply Travel Safe and Travel Safe Plus. It applies to policies issued on or after 25 March 2026. Older documents may use different names and terms, so use the PDS and Certificate of Insurance that match the date your policy was issued.
The insurer is Zurich Australian Insurance Limited, and Virgin Australia’s official material identifies Cover-More as the administrator. The PDS says it is intended to help customers understand the policy, compare cover and make an informed purchase decision. This is a review of the policy benefits, not an independent test of claims handling or customer satisfaction.

What do Travel Safe and Travel Safe Plus cover?
The most important distinction is breadth: both levels list unlimited overseas medical expenses, while a number of travel-cost and belongings benefits are listed only for Travel Safe Plus. All figures below are policy limits in the 2026 PDS, not estimates of what a claim will pay. Conditions, exclusions, sublimits and other terms apply.
#1 Best Overall
| Benefit | Travel Safe | Travel Safe Plus |
|---|---|---|
| Overseas medical expenses, including emergency repatriation or evacuation | Unlimited | Unlimited |
| Overseas dental expenses | Up to $2,000 | Up to $2,000 |
| Additional expenses | Unlimited benefit limit, subject to terms | Unlimited benefit limit, subject to terms |
| Travel-service-provider insolvency | No cover listed | Up to $10,000 |
| Luggage and travel documents | No cover listed | Up to $15,000, with item caps |
| Delayed luggage allowance | No cover listed | Up to $1,100 |
| Money | No cover listed | Up to $250 |
| Rental-car insurance excess | No cover listed | Up to $10,000 |
| Travel delay | No cover listed | Up to $2,000 |
| Resumption of journey | No cover listed | Up to $3,000 |
| Missed connections | No cover listed | Up to $3,000 |
| Special events | No cover listed | Up to $2,000 |
| Hospital incidentals | No cover listed | Up to $8,000 |
| Hijacking | No cover listed | Up to $8,000 |
| Personal liability | No cover listed | Up to $2.5 million |
| COVID-19 benefits | Check applicable wording | Benefits described in the wording |
The medical-expenses benefit is subject to the policy terms and does not extend beyond 12 months from the onset of the illness, condition or injury. The table’s “unlimited” figures should not be read as removing that limit or other conditions.
Travel Safe Plus item limits
The $15,000 luggage and travel-documents total is not a per-item allowance. The PDS sets individual ceilings for specified items:
- Phone or smart watch: up to $1,500.
- Camera or video camera, and laptop: up to $4,000.
- Tablet: up to $3,000.
- Drone, jewellery, watch, medical device or other item: up to $1,200.
These are maximum limits, not guaranteed reimbursements. The policy’s conditions, depreciation, proof-of-ownership requirements and care requirements can affect a claim. Travel Safe Plus allows increases to specified item limits for eligible belongings if you pay an additional premium and provide current proof of value.

Is Travel Safe Plus worth choosing over Travel Safe?
Travel Safe Plus is the more comprehensive level in the PDS, especially if you want listed cover for belongings, rental-car excess, travel delays, provider insolvency or personal liability. Travel Safe may be worth considering if you are comfortable with the benefits it omits and mainly want the shared medical and dental benefits. Neither description establishes which plan is better value for a particular traveller.
No specific current premium or independent claims-performance statistic is established here. The price and practical value depend on your traveller details, destination and dates, selected cancellation amount, excess and other choices. Compare the premium with the costs you would face if an excluded or capped expense occurred.
How much cancellation cover should you select?
Cancellation cover is an amount you choose, rather than a single fixed amount that applies to every policy. The chosen amount appears on your Certificate of Insurance and affects the premium. Estimate the non-refundable prepaid costs you want to insure—such as tickets, accommodation and tours—and select an amount accordingly. Check the plan-specific conditions and any COVID-19 sublimits in the wording rather than assuming every cancellation reason is covered up to the amount selected.

What should you check before buying?
Pre-existing medical conditions
The PDS separates medical conditions into those automatically included, those that need assessment and those that cannot be covered. An assessment and additional premium may be required; look for the approved cover on your certificate. A condition that has not been diagnosed, or symptoms for which you are awaiting medical advice, may not be covered in relation to that condition. Whether cover applies depends on your specific circumstances and the policy’s assessment outcome.

For a multi-night ocean or sea cruise, disclose the cruise and pay the additional premium for cruise cover if you want cover for cruise-related events or onboard incidents. The PDS lists exceptions to this requirement, including river cruises, one-night cruises, ferries and cruises in Australian coastal waters; check the exact trip and certificate terms.
Some activities are included, while others may require an additional activity option or may not be covered. Check the wording against what you actually plan to do. For valuables, compare each item’s value with its applicable cap, and make sure you can meet the policy’s proof and care requirements.

Annual multi-trip duration
An annual multi-trip policy allows unlimited trips during its 365-day cover period, subject to the maximum journey duration selected. The official FAQ lists international trip-duration choices of 30, 45 or 60 days; this is not cover for 365 consecutive days abroad. It also says some short domestic journeys under 250 km may qualify if they include at least one night in paid accommodation. Check the live offer and your certificate for the options and terms applying to your purchase.
Destination, exclusions and benefit limits
Australia’s Smartraveller advises travellers to read the PDS and check destination, trip duration, activities, age and health, belongings, limits and exclusions. Its general guidance notes that insurance may exclude some activities, require paid extras, or restrict cover in situations involving unlawful behaviour, drugs or alcohol, travel against advisory levels, unattended belongings or undeclared pre-existing conditions. Treat that as a checklist, not a substitute for the contract: the policy wording and your certificate determine your cover.
When does cover start, and what if you change your mind?
According to the official FAQ, cancellation benefits start when the policy is issued. Other benefits, including emergency medical and dental cover, start on the departure date shown on the policy. The FAQ and current PDS describe a 21-day cooling-off period for a full refund, provided you have not already travelled or made a claim. Check the terms applying to your policy before relying on the refund period.
How do you lodge a claim?
The official FAQ directs policyholders to submit a claim online or use a downloadable form. Keep receipts and supporting documents; originals may be requested. It says to notify the insurer as soon as possible and within 60 days of the return date on your certificate. If you submit after that period, attach an explanation. Confirm the process and deadline in the wording for your own policy version.
How should you compare this policy with another option?
Use the same traveller details and trip assumptions for each quote. Compare the benefits that could materially change your out-of-pocket costs, not only the headline premium.
- Medical and emergency repatriation cover, including conditions and time limits.
- Cancellation amount, policy excess and reasons for cancellation that qualify.
- Total luggage limit, item sublimits, depreciation and proof requirements.
- Rental-car excess, travel delay, missed connections and provider insolvency.
- Cruise and activity options, and the process for pre-existing conditions.
- Annual-trip maximum duration, exclusions and final premium.
Smartraveller cautions against choosing travel insurance on price alone without checking the PDS. For this policy, the certificate and applicable wording are essential to understanding what a selected benefit limit means in a real claim.
