If you want to shape a Vim-style editor through Lua and plugins, Neovim is the clearest fit. If you want integrated features and are drawn to a selection-first way of editing, try Helix.

Neovim is a Vim fork, and its documentation says it maintains compatibility with Vim where possible, with Vim9script explicitly excluded from that compatibility statement. If you already have Vim muscle memory, this distinction can outweigh a list of features. Neovim keeps the broad editing lineage while offering its own customization and plugin routes. Vim remains the practical choice when your priority is continuing with Vim itself, especially in environments where it is already present.
Helix: select, then act
Helix uses a selection-then-action model: first select text, then apply an operation such as delete, change, or yank. The project describes its approach as drawing inspiration from Vim and Kakoune. Although it shares modal-editing ideas with Vim, the order of interaction differs in a way that may be immediately noticeable to an established Vim user.
For someone new to modal editing, Helix’s selection-first model may be appealing, but that is a preference to test rather than a guaranteed advantage. Try representative edits—selecting a word or line, changing it, deleting it, and yanking it—and see whether you naturally reach for the next step. For an experienced Vim user, the same exercise reveals whether existing habits transfer comfortably or get in the way.
What to test in a five-minute editing trial
Use the same small file in each editor so that the comparison measures interaction rather than unfamiliar code. Move to a symbol, select a word and a line, change the selection, delete it, yank it, paste it, search for another occurrence, and undo the sequence. In Vim or Neovim, notice how naturally your action-then-motion habits work. In Helix, deliberately select the target before each action. Repeat the exercise after a short break: muscle memory often becomes clearer when you are not consciously recalling commands.

What to verify before blaming the editor
If completion, diagnostics, or navigation do not appear, separate the problem into three parts: the editor client, the installed server, and the project’s configuration. A client being built into the editor settles only the first part. The server may not be installed, may not support the language or feature you expect, or may not activate for the project’s root. Neovim’s documentation notes that server support and project-root configuration affect activation.
- Confirm which language and language-server program you intend to use.
- Install that server separately from the editor.
- Check the editor’s language-support documentation for the server and configuration expected by your installed build.
- In Helix, run
hx --healthorhx --health <language>to inspect readiness for the installed editor. - In Neovim, check the active LSP state using the current LSP documentation, then verify the server and project-root configuration if it is not active.
Helix’s language-support table is version-sensitive and advises checking the actual installed build. Neovim’s LSP APIs and defaults can also evolve, so consult the current project documentation for setup details rather than assuming an old configuration applies.
Language-tooling questions to ask before switching
- Does the server you need support the language version and project layout you use?
- Will the server recognize the same project root when launched from the terminal?
- Do you need diagnostics only, or also completion, navigation, rename, and other interactions?
- Can you reproduce the setup on every machine where you edit?
Answering these questions prevents a common mistake: choosing an editor because its client is built in, then discovering that the separately installed server or project configuration is the real limitation.
Customization, plugins, and configuration effort
Neovim: build or adopt a customized setup
Neovim documents Lua as a way to configure and control the editor. Its API supports plugins and external processes, and plugin code can be written in Lua or Vimscript. That makes it suitable if you want to assemble a setup around your own preferences or use plugins to extend the editor.

Helix: integrated features without a current plugin system
Helix emphasizes modern defaults and integrated functionality. Its official site describes features such as fuzzy finding, project-wide search, themes, and language-specific completion, navigation, and diagnostics. The same site states that there is currently no plugin system, while expressing an intention to have one eventually. That intention is not an available feature or a timeline.
This makes the decision concrete: choose Helix if its integrated feature set fits what you need without relying on plugins. If a particular extension or custom behavior is essential, verify that Helix supports it in the installed version before switching. Choose Neovim if plugin extensibility and the ability to modify the editor through APIs are central requirements.
Helix’s integrated approach can reduce the number of decisions at the start, but it does not remove every setup responsibility. You still need the editor itself, the external language server for your language, and a configuration that matches your project. Vim: continuity as an extensibility decision
For Vim users, the most meaningful customization question may be whether changing editors is worth changing a working environment.
