VIEWE’s PLCM-UES31S043H800V480C-U is a 4.3-inch touchscreen development board built around Espressif’s preview ESP32-S31. A direct-store price of $38.99, reported by CNX Software on October 14, 2026, buys a local display, 2.4 GHz Wi‑Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.4, IEEE 802.15.4 for Zigbee, Thread and Matter, plus RS485, CAN, audio and microSD interfaces. It is compelling for connected-device prototypes, but its preview-only software status makes it a development platform rather than a proven production module.
What the $39 ESP32-S31 board is
The board combines a 4.3-inch human-machine interface with the ESP32-S31-WROOM-3 module. Its 800×480 IPS TFT has 400 cd/m² brightness and capacitive touch handled by a GT911 controller. Why the radio combination matters
Most low-cost display controllers force a design choice between Wi‑Fi and low-power mesh protocols. This board places 2.4 GHz Wi‑Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.4 alongside an IEEE 802.15.4 radio. That gives a single hardware platform the radio foundations used by Zigbee and Thread, while the published specification also lists Matter support.
For a smart-home wall panel, the touchscreen can present a local interface while Wi‑Fi handles network connectivity and 802.15.4 connects compatible Zigbee or Thread devices. In a gateway prototype, Bluetooth can serve nearby commissioning or accessory links. Actual Matter, Zigbee or Thread operation still depends on the software stack and application firmware; the hardware specification alone does not establish feature completeness or certification.

Building, greenhouse or machine HMI
RS485 and CAN provide wired links to sensors, drives and controllers, while the 20-pin header exposes UART and I2C for additional modules. The −20 °C to +70 °C stated operating range is relevant to many sheltered equipment enclosures, although enclosure design and environmental testing remain the integrator’s responsibility.
Multimedia or voice-interface prototype
The ES8389 codec, two microphones, dual Class-D amplifiers and speaker connectors support audio experiments. The board also offers microSD storage for local assets and USB 2.0 Type-A OTG for compatible peripherals.
Software support is the main limitation
CNX Software describes ESP32-S31 as a preview device and quotes the following constraint: “Since the ESP32-S31 is still a preview device, you can program it only with the ESP-IDF framework.” The report recommends the ESP-IDF master branch with the --preview flag.

That means the board is aimed at developers comfortable working with an evolving Espressif SDK. The cited material does not claim Arduino support for this board, so a beginner should not assume that existing Arduino examples, libraries or board definitions will work without adaptation.
What VIEWE provides
VIEWE supplies examples covering LCD output, GT911 touch, ES8389 audio playback, microSD access, RS485, CAN and a complete LVGL factory user interface. Those examples can shorten the path to a functional prototype, but they do not establish long-term API stability, maintenance duration or production qualification.
A practical first-use path
- Install a compatible ESP-IDF environment and use the master branch required for ESP32-S31 preview support.
- Enable the preview option by passing

- Begin with the supplied LCD and touch example to verify the panel and GT911 controller.
- Add the audio, microSD, RS485 or CAN examples one subsystem at a time before combining them in an LVGL interface.
The cited report does not provide a fixed command sequence, SDK release number, measured boot time or troubleshooting log, so those details should be taken from the board’s current vendor documentation rather than inferred from the hardware list.

Is ESP32-S31 ready for production?
Not on the evidence currently available for this board. The preview designation and ESP-IDF-only workflow make it attractive for evaluating new silicon and building demonstrations, but they add integration risk for a shipped product. Before committing to production, a team should verify:
- Required peripherals and radio stacks compile against the exact ESP-IDF revision it plans to freeze.
- Matter, Thread and Zigbee functions meet the intended interoperability and certification requirements.
- Supply stability, module availability, firmware-update support and vendor documentation meet the product’s lifecycle needs.
- Thermal behavior, touch latency, audio quality, EMC performance and long-duration reliability pass independent validation.
- The 5 V input and up-to-500 mA backlit draw fit the chosen power budget and enclosure.
No independent benchmark, latency test, battery-life result or failure-rate statistic was reported for this board. The 320 MHz frequency and memory figures describe the module; they are not a performance ranking against other ESP32 families.

How to compare it with ESP32-C6, ESP32-C5 and ESP32-P4 display designs
A fair comparison depends on the complete design, not just the chip name. For each candidate, check display size and resolution, Wi‑Fi band and generation, Zigbee/Thread/Matter support, CPU and memory, wired industrial I/O, audio, SDK maturity, power draw, board dimensions, documentation and total price.

The cited report does not provide matching specifications or prices for ESP32-C6 boards, ESP32-C5 boards, ESP32-P4/C5 combinations or other touchscreen kits. It therefore cannot establish that this ESP32-S31 board is faster, cheaper, more efficient or better supported than any particular alternative. Its distinctive proposition is the combination of a ready-made 4.3-inch interface, Wi‑Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.4 with 802.15.4, RS485 and CAN on one small board.
Power, accessories and physical integration
Plan for a regulated 5 V source. The published typical draw is 320 mA and the maximum is 500 mA with the backlight on, so a supply rated above the maximum is sensible for startup and peripheral margin. USB-C is the simplest connection for development, while the 105×67 mm board outline helps with enclosure planning.
A microSD card, small speakers and a suitable 5 V USB-C supply are the natural accessories indicated by the hardware. The available information does not confirm included accessories, stock, shipping or warranty terms.

At a reported $38.99, this is an unusually complete way to experiment with ESP32-S31: touchscreen graphics, Wi‑Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.4, 802.15.4, audio, storage and industrial buses are integrated on one 105×67 mm board. Buy it for exploratory smart-home, building-control and machine-interface work if you are prepared to use preview ESP-IDF tooling. Choose a more mature platform for a product that requires a stable beginner ecosystem, established production support or independently verified performance.
