Video games are not one experience with one mental-health effect. To understand what gaming is doing in a child’s life, adults need to ask what they play, who they play with, how it feels, and whether it is getting in the way of sleep, movement, relationships, or responsibilities.
Are video games bad for kids’ mental health?
There is no sound basis for treating every game, player, or gaming session as harmful—or for assuming gaming is harmless. Research finds a mixed picture, and different studies measure different things: young people’s own experiences, patterns of play, or broader developmental indicators. Associations in these studies do not establish that gaming caused an outcome.
An Australian eSafety Commissioner study of 1,799 online gamers aged 8–17, based on fieldwork in August and September 2023, found that most respondents said gaming supported at least one of three areas: learning or skills, social connection, or emotional wellbeing. At the same time, four in ten reported negative gaming experiences, and three in ten teen gamers had encountered potentially harmful ideas. Those findings belong together: benefits and risks can coexist, even for children who enjoy gaming.

A 2016 study of 3,195 children aged 6–11 in six EU countries found that video-game use was not associated with increased risk of mental-health problems. That observational finding is not proof that gaming protects mental health or that no individual child is affected. In a one-year study of 194 children around ages 7–11, Adam Lobel and colleagues found that gaming frequency was associated with increases in emotion problems; violent-game play was not associated with psychosocial changes. The authors also found an association between competitive play and lower prosocial behavior among frequent players—around eight or more hours a week—and said the result needed replication. These findings do not show that gaming caused the changes.

Can video games help kids socially?
They can create ways to cooperate, talk, share interests, and feel connected. The eSafety study found that many young respondents described social connection as one benefit of gaming. But an online game is also a social setting where a child may encounter unkind peers, pressure, exclusion, or harmful ideas. The game’s community and the child’s particular interactions matter as much as the fact that it is multiplayer.
That is one reason dismissal can leave adults with less useful information. The eSafety Commissioner reports that young people wanted adults to understand what gaming is like for them, and that many would welcome the chance to play with parents and carers. These are the regulator’s summaries of young people’s views, not quotations from an identified child.

What matters besides the number of hours?
Duration matters when gaming displaces things a child needs, but the evidence here does not establish one screen-time cutoff that predicts harm for every child. A more useful assessment looks at the whole experience:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- The child’s account: Do they feel happy, connected, tense, pressured, or upset while playing and afterward?
- The game and play style: What content do they encounter? Are they cooperating, competing, or playing alone?
- The people involved: Are interactions respectful, or does the child face bullying, unwanted contact, or pressure?
- Daily life: Is gaming interfering with sleep, movement, schoolwork, family time, friendships, or other responsibilities?
- The child’s circumstances: Age, social situation, and existing vulnerabilities can affect how the same experience lands.
Broader digital-media guidance supports this contextual approach, but it should not be mistaken for game-specific proof. The American Academy of Pediatrics’ January 2026 policy statement describes possible benefits of digital media for learning, identity, expression, and wellbeing, particularly with supportive caregiver involvement, quality content, and positive peers. It also warns that engagement-centered commercial design can encourage prolonged use and displace healthy behaviors such as sleep and movement. The World Health Organization similarly notes that digital environments can support connection, learning, and access to services while exposing users to harmful content, excessive use and addictive behaviors, cyberbullying, and isolation.

How should parents talk with a child about gaming?
Start with curiosity rather than a verdict. Ask the child to show or explain what they play, what they like about it, and who they play with. Ask whether anything has felt uncomfortable or troubling, and whether gaming is affecting sleep or other activities. Listening does not mean agreeing to every game or schedule; it gives you a clearer basis for setting boundaries that address the actual problem.
When appropriate, playing together can make the conversation more concrete. You can see how the game works, notice how other players behave, and learn what your child finds enjoyable. The aim is not to become an expert at every game. It is to make it easier for the child to bring you a concern before it grows.

When is gaming a reason to seek more help?
Pay attention to sustained distress or clear disruption to daily life, rather than relying on hours alone. If a child is consistently upset by gaming experiences, or play is interfering with sleep, school, relationships, or other important activities, talk with them about what is happening and consider seeking advice from a qualified health professional. A general article cannot diagnose a child or determine whether gaming is the cause of a difficulty.
