Video game streaming can mean either sending your gameplay over the internet for an audience to watch or receiving a game that runs on a remote computer. The key difference is who the stream is for—and where the game runs.
What does video game streaming mean?
The phrase has two main meanings. In gameplay broadcasting, you play a game and send its audio and video over the internet so other people can watch. In cloud game streaming, a remote service runs the game and sends its output to your device so you can play.
These are different uses of streaming: one delivers your gameplay to viewers; the other delivers a playable game to you.

A player runs a game on a PC, console, or mobile device. A software encoder, a console’s built-in streaming feature, or a hardware encoder sends the audio and video to a platform’s ingest system. The platform prepares the broadcast and distributes it to viewers. Twitch describes this flow in its streaming guide and documents RTMP as a protocol for sending broadcast signals in its video broadcast documentation.

Platforms support different ways to start. YouTube documents mobile, webcam, encoder, and console streaming, including direct streaming from modern PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo consoles in its live-streaming help. The exact steps and available options depend on the platform and device.
What equipment is required?
There is no single hardware checklist that defines streaming. A compatible game device and a way to send its audio and video are central to broadcasting, but the route may be built into a console or use software or a hardware encoder. A microphone and camera are optional for Twitch broadcasting; they can add commentary or a face-cam, but they are not prerequisites. Twitch also notes that the encoding device does not have to be a powerful computer in its streaming guide.

Why does upload stability matter?
The broadcaster has to upload the stream to the platform. Twitch advises matching upload capacity to the configured bitrate and prioritizing a stable connection over settings that cause dropped frames in its broadcasting guidelines. Recommended technical settings vary by platform and can change, so consult the current guidance for the service you use rather than treating one bitrate or configuration as universal.
How is cloud game streaming different from Remote Play?
Both let a player receive gameplay on a device other than the one doing the work, but the game runs in different places. AWS describes cloud game streaming as gameplay rendered on a cloud server and streamed to a thin client, often a browser, in its Games Industry Lens. Microsoft’s Xbox documentation distinguishes Xbox Game Streaming, where the game runs on an Xbox server in an Azure datacenter, from Remote Play, where the player’s own Xbox console runs the game and streams it to a Windows PC or mobile device: Xbox Remote Play help.

| Use | Who receives the stream? | Where does the game run? |
|---|---|---|
| Gameplay broadcasting | An audience of viewers | The broadcaster’s local PC, console, or mobile device |
| Cloud game streaming | The player | A service provider’s remote server |
| Remote Play | The player, on another device | The player’s own console |
How can you tell which kind someone means?
Look at the direction and destination of the video. If a player is sending their session to an audience on a platform, they are broadcasting gameplay. If a player is receiving a game that is being rendered remotely, they are using cloud game streaming. If their own console runs the game and sends it to another screen, that is Remote Play.
