For a relaxed video game night, choose games that fit your guests, verify the exact player and controller setup, and plan what people can do while they wait for a turn. Before guests arrive, test the first game, check any account or internet requirements, and make room for guests who would rather watch, help, or join later.
What do you need for a video game night?
Start with the equipment you already have: a console or PC, display, selected games, compatible controllers, power, and internet access if the game requires it. Pick a likely first game and test that it launches and lets you configure the expected players. A console’s maximum number of connected controllers does not tell you how many people a particular game mode supports.
Before the event, check the selected title and mode for:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Supported player count and whether play is local on one screen or online across separate systems.
- Controller count, controller type, and compatibility with your console generation.
- Any required account, subscription, internet connection, accessory, or additional game copy.
- How guests join, take turns, or enter a private room.
For example, Nintendo’s Mario Party Superstars setup instructions distinguish offline play, local rooms, and online play. The host chooses a player count and connects controllers; an online room can use a passcode. Those steps are specific to that game, not a universal setup process.

- 1000Hz Polling Rate (for 2.4G and wired connection)
- Hall Effect joysticks and Hall triggers. Wear-resistant metal joystick rings.
- Extra R4/L4 bumpers. Custom button mapping without using software. Turbo function.
- Refined bumpers and D-pad. Light but tactile.
How many controllers do you need?
Count the players who can play at the same time in the chosen mode, then confirm which controllers that mode accepts. If more guests are coming than the game supports, plan a rotation rather than assuming everyone can join at once. Check compatibility for the exact console generation and game before borrowing or buying controllers.
Game-specific instructions matter. Nintendo provides separate controller and settings flows for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Use the instructions for the game you plan to play, rather than treating one title’s controller setup as a general rule.

How do you pick games for the group?
Match the activity to the guests’ ages, experience, group size, and preference for cooperative or competitive play. A mix of shorter rounds and longer options gives the group flexibility. Explain the rules before a round starts, especially if some guests are new to games, and offer a low-pressure role such as watching, helping with teams, or joining the next round.

Nintendo says its Joy-Con mode supports up to 8 players, while smart-device mode supports up to 100 players for certain games. These are Nintendo’s title-specific published limits; they are not general limits for party games. Some games are available in only one mode, Joy-Con play may require additional accessories, and smart-device mode requires a Nintendo Account, a compatible smart device, and internet access. Check the game’s requirements and mode before relying on either player count.

How can you make game night accessible and family-aware?
Ask guests beforehand whether a different control arrangement, readable text, lower audio, or a break from fast inputs would help. These practical steps can make the setup more welcoming, but they cannot guarantee that every game or control arrangement will meet an individual need. Microsoft’s Playbook for Accessible Gaming Events offers event guidance, including for demo stations and making adaptable controls available when needed.
For children or a mixed-age group, check each game’s rating and discuss in-game purchases and online communication with the relevant caregivers. ESRB’s Family Gaming Guide covers these topics. Its multiplayer guidance discusses parental controls, muting, and blocking as tools for managing online interactions. A rating or control setting alone cannot decide what is right for every household.

How do you keep the evening moving?
Set up a visible turn order or team rotation if more guests want to play than the game supports. Have the next game ready, and let the group choose from a short list instead of browsing a game library during the event. Explain teams, scoring, and whether rematches are allowed before play begins. Schedule breaks and offer a non-game activity so participation does not depend on everyone playing continuously.
There is no established ideal schedule or duration for a game night in the cited guidance. Keep the plan flexible: use shorter rounds when the group is still deciding what it enjoys, and leave room to continue a game if guests are having fun.
