A video doorbell lets you see and respond to visitors from a phone or compatible smart-home device. The right one depends less on headline camera specs than on whether your door has suitable wiring, how you want to store recordings, and which app and devices you already use. Product pages describe useful features, but they do not establish that installing a doorbell camera prevents crime.

What a video doorbell can—and cannot—do

Depending on the model and service plan, a doorbell camera can provide a live view, send visitor or motion alerts, let you speak with someone at the entrance, and save recordings. Those functions are distinct: a device may offer live viewing without saving footage, or may require a subscription for recording history and some alert features.

Manufacturer specifications are useful for checking compatibility and advertised features, but they are not independent comparative tests. The product information cited here does not prove that a video doorbell deters theft or reduces crime.

Battery-powered

A battery model can be easier to place where existing doorbell wiring is unavailable or unsuitable. It still needs access for charging or battery maintenance. Battery-life figures are manufacturer estimates: for example, TP-Link says its Tapo TD25 can run for up to eight months, but actual life depends on use and conditions.

Wired

A wired doorbell avoids routine battery charging, but only if the home’s existing wiring and transformer meet that exact model’s requirements. Do not assume that any doorbell circuit will work. Google lists different transformer requirements for its wired variants, so check the current country-specific compatibility information for the model you are considering.

Power over Ethernet

PoE models use an Ethernet connection to carry power and data. This can suit an entrance where a compatible Ethernet run is available, but installation depends on having that connection and the necessary equipment. Ring’s product category includes wired, battery, and PoE doorbells.

Decide whether you need recordings or just live access

Live viewing and saved history are not interchangeable. Ring says live viewing and answering notifications are available without a subscription, but videos and photos are not saved without a Ring Protect plan. Its current category page describes video history of up to 180 days as a plan feature or limit—not a promise that every user will have that duration or that it reflects typical use.

Other models may include local storage, optional cloud storage, or particular alerts without a monthly fee. Confirm the exact model and market rather than applying a brand-wide assumption.

Local storage example: Tapo TD25

TP-Link lists microSD storage up to 512 GB for the TD25; the card is sold separately. The page also lists optional cloud storage. The 512 GB figure is the manufacturer’s stated maximum card support, not an estimate of how many days of footage a card will hold; that depends on recording settings and use.

Alerts and subscriptions vary by model

TP-Link describes people, package, and vehicle alerts for the TD25 without a subscription. Its Tapo D225 page describes on-device AI alerts without monthly fees. These are model-specific manufacturer claims. Check which alerts are included for the version sold in your country and whether cloud history or other functions cost extra.

Check compatibility before you buy

  1. Inspect the existing wiring and transformer. Match the transformer voltage and other requirements to the chosen wired model; do not rely on the fact that an old doorbell currently works.
  2. Plan for battery access if needed. Consider how often charging may be required and whether you can remove or reach the unit conveniently.
  3. Check the connection at the entrance. Confirm reliable Wi-Fi for a Wi-Fi model, or an available Ethernet/PoE connection for a PoE model.
  4. Confirm chime and device compatibility. Check whether the doorbell works with your existing chime, phone app, and preferred smart-home devices.
  5. Choose a recording approach. Decide whether live access is sufficient or whether you need saved footage. Compare retention, local card support, cloud terms, and any recurring fee.
  6. Review placement and privacy. Consider what the camera captures beyond your property, use available privacy controls, and follow applicable local rules.

Which type is the better fit?

  • Choose battery power when flexible placement matters and you are comfortable maintaining or charging the battery.
  • Choose wired power when compatible wiring is already available and you prefer not to manage a battery.
  • Consider PoE when Ethernet is available at the entrance and you want power and data over that connection.
  • Favor local storage if you want an option that does not depend solely on a cloud plan, while checking card cost, capacity, and model support.
  • Compare subscriptions carefully if saved history, longer retention, or specific alert features matter to you; a no-fee live view does not necessarily include recordings.
