For most homes, a 7-inch indoor monitor, a camera covering at least 120 degrees, wiring that matches your existing cable, and storage you can control locally are the safest starting points. Choose a dedicated monitor kit if you want a wall-mounted screen and door-release controls that work without a phone. Choose a PoE or Wi-Fi, app-first doorbell if remote answering, instant notifications and network recording matter more. Before buying, measure the monitor location, map the entrance approach, identify the cable and voltage at the door, and decide whether recordings belong on a memory card, NVR, built-in memory or cloud service.
What a video door phone does
A video door phone combines an outdoor door station with a camera, microphone, speaker and call button, plus either an indoor monitor or a phone application. When a visitor presses the button, the resident sees and speaks to the visitor. Systems with a relay can also release an electric strike, gate or other access-control device.
There are two broad designs:
- Dedicated-monitor systems: a wall-mounted indoor screen answers calls and may operate a lock or gate independently of a smartphone. Panasonic and Honeywell both publish 7-inch monitor examples.
- App-first systems: the door station connects by Ethernet, Wi-Fi or a two-wire link to a monitor, then sends calls and alerts to an app. They are usually the better fit when remote answering and network recording are priorities.
The camera, cable and recording method are interdependent. A high-resolution door station is of little use if the existing conductors cannot provide its required power, and a wide lens cannot show a useful face if the mounting position is too high or pointed at the wrong part of the approach.

Choose the indoor monitor before comparing features
Why 7 inches is the practical default
Dedicated indoor monitors commonly use a 7-inch-class display. Panasonic lists a 7-inch wide colour screen on the VL-SA74 and a 7-inch monitor with 1024×600 resolution on the VL-SA71. Honeywell Building Technologies also describes a 7-inch LCD with a 2MP camera example. At a normal hallway or kitchen answering position, this size is large enough to identify a caller and operate an unlock control without occupying the wall area of a tablet.

- 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
Do not select by diagonal measurement alone. A 7-inch screen can still be awkward if it blocks a light switch, opens into a door swing or is mounted where glare makes the image unreadable. Somfy advises measuring the available space for both the indoor monitor and door station before purchase. Measure the full bezel, not just the active panel, and leave room for the cable bend and any mounting bracket.
When a different size makes sense
- Smaller display: suitable where the monitor is viewed from close range and the wall is constrained, provided the interface remains legible for every resident.
- Larger display: useful when the answering position is several metres away, users have limited vision, or a household wants a larger preview. It does not correct a low-resolution camera, poor night lighting or a badly aimed lens.
- Multiple monitors: useful in a multi-storey home or separate living areas. Confirm the maximum number of indoor stations and whether each can answer and release the lock; Honeywell describes expansion to additional monitors and cameras, while individual system limits vary.
Resolution and viewing distance should be considered together. Panasonic’s 1024×600 specification is adequate for a simple call screen, while a 5MP door station such as the Reolink Video Doorbell PoE supplies more pixels for identification and digital detail. A larger monitor cannot create detail the camera never captured.
Set the camera angle from the entrance geometry
Use 120 degrees as the minimum planning target
Somfy advises choosing a wide-angle camera of at least 120 degrees to show visitors and the surrounding entrance. This is a useful starting point, not a guarantee that every 120-degree lens produces the same image. Check whether the manufacturer quotes horizontal, vertical or diagonal coverage; those figures are not interchangeable.
| Viewing figure | What it measures | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Horizontal | Width of the scene from left to right | Most useful for a porch or path where visitors approach from either side. |
| Vertical | Height of the scene from floor to above the visitor | Shows packages, faces and the threshold when the camera is mounted at the right height. |
| Diagonal | Corner-to-corner field of view | Often the largest published number; do not compare it directly with a horizontal rating. |
Reolink publishes 135 degrees horizontal, 100 degrees vertical and 180 degrees diagonal for its Video Doorbell PoE. EZVIZ lists a 134-degree diagonal view for the HP5. The two products therefore cannot be ranked simply by the number 134 versus 180: one is a diagonal value and the other set includes a horizontal value.

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
Match coverage to the approach
- Narrow hallway or gate recess: an extreme wide-angle lens may add wall area without helping identification. Prioritise a clear face-sized image and correct vertical placement.
- Porch with side approach: a broad horizontal view reduces blind spots when visitors stand away from the button.
- Package drop at the threshold: check vertical coverage and the camera’s downward angle so the area immediately below the station is visible.
- Driveway or long path: field of view alone does not determine recognition distance. Look at resolution, lighting and the mounting height as a combined system.
Wider lenses include more of the scene but can make people near the edges appear smaller or geometrically distorted. Aim the centre of the image at a visitor’s face, keep strong backlighting out of the frame where possible, and verify the view at night before finalising the mount.
Check wiring and power before ordering
Compatibility with the cable already in the wall is often the deciding factor. Identify the cable, measure or verify its voltage, and determine whether it runs point-to-point, through a network switch or between an outdoor station and an indoor monitor.
Identify the existing conductors
- Turn off power where appropriate and inspect both ends. Look for a two-wire analogue/intercom cable, Cat5e or better twisted-pair Ethernet, or conventional doorbell power conductors.
- Record the voltage and polarity. Do not assume a doorbell transformer can power a video station. A system may require low-voltage AC, DC, Power over Ethernet or a proprietary two-wire bus.
- Trace the topology. Note junctions, an existing chime, a PoE switch or injector, and the location of any transformer. Cable length and voltage drop can matter even when the connector fits.
- Compare the result with the product’s installation diagram. A connector that looks compatible does not establish electrical compatibility.
Examples of published requirements
| System example | Published connection or power | What to verify at home |
|---|---|---|
| Reolink Video Doorbell PoE | IEEE 802.3af PoE, or 12–24VAC / 24VDC hardwire input | Whether the network switch or injector supplies 802.3af, or whether the transformer is within the stated AC/DC range. |
| EZVIZ HP5 | 2-wire installation to the indoor screen | Whether the existing pair is suitable for this system and whether the supplied screen/power arrangement is present. |
| Panasonic network catalogue | Cat5e-or-higher UTP with PoE or a separate power supply | Whether the installed cable is Cat5e or better and whether PoE or a local supply is available. See the Panasonic Video Intercom B2C Catalogue. |
Some systems also need a relay, a separate lock power supply or a compatible electric strike. Confirm the relay’s contact rating and whether the door station is switching the lock directly or merely sending a signal to a controller. If the installation requires a new mains circuit, a transformer change or concealed cable, use a qualified installer; Somfy notes that some systems require a nearby 230V supply.
Weather and cable routing
Check the outdoor unit’s weather rating in the exact model documentation, not only the product family name. Plan a drip loop, seal the cable entry and avoid routing low-voltage conductors where they can be crushed by the door or exposed to standing water. Confirm that the mounting surface permits the specified viewing angle and that the button remains reachable for children, wheelchair users and visitors carrying packages.

Decide where recordings will live
Recording architecture affects privacy, recurring fees, recovery after theft and how much history is available. Choose it before buying because not every door station supports every method.
| Storage method | Strengths | Limitations and checks |
|---|---|---|
| Built-in image memory | Simple snapshots without a separate card or account. | Capacity is limited and exporting images may be less convenient. Panasonic’s VL-SA74 lists storage for 100 images. |
| microSD card | Local ownership, no mandatory cloud account and easy replacement. | Confirm the maximum capacity, recording mode, overwrite behaviour, file access and card endurance. Reolink specifies up to 256GB; EZVIZ HP5 specifies up to 512GB. |
| NVR or network storage | Suitable for continuous recording, longer retention and several cameras. | Check supported protocols, network bandwidth, drive capacity, retention settings and what happens if the network or recorder is offline. Reolink documents NVR support as well as local recording. |
| Cloud | Remote access and an off-site copy if the door station is stolen. | Verify subscription cost, retention period, region, privacy terms and whether cloud recording is optional. EZVIZ lists optional CloudPlay for HP5. |
Capacity depends on resolution, frame rate, codec, motion frequency and whether the system records continuously or only on events. A maximum card size is not a promise of a particular number of days. Enable overwrite only after deciding how evidence will be exported, and use a high-endurance card intended for surveillance workloads when the manufacturer permits user-replaceable media.
Dedicated monitor or app-first doorbell?
| Priority | Better starting architecture | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Wall-mounted answering point | Dedicated indoor monitor | Residents can answer and operate access controls without finding a phone or opening an app. |
| Remote answering and push alerts | PoE or Wi-Fi app-first unit | Calls can reach residents away from home, subject to internet, account and notification reliability. |
| Existing two-wire intercom cabling | Two-wire-compatible kit | May avoid replacing the cable, but the pair must meet the system’s electrical and topology requirements. |
| Structured Ethernet already at the door | PoE unit | One cable can carry power and data when the switch or injector provides the required PoE standard. |
| Local, subscription-free recordings | microSD or NVR design | Recordings remain under the owner’s control, with the trade-off of managing cards, drives and backups. |
This is an architecture decision rather than a performance ranking. Panasonic and Honeywell provide concrete dedicated-monitor examples; Reolink and EZVIZ document app-connected designs with local storage options. Check whether a chosen product can still answer calls locally if the internet fails, and whether remote access requires a vendor account or paid service.

Plan the lock, gate and indoor stations
If access control is part of the requirement, treat it as a separate engineering question. Determine whether the door has an electric strike, magnetic lock, gate controller or mechanical lock that cannot be released electronically. Then verify:
- the lock’s operating voltage and current;
- whether the video system provides a dry-contact relay or only a low-voltage output;
- whether a separate power supply is required for the lock;
- the safe state during a power failure; and
- how many indoor monitors can call, transfer or release the door.
Never connect a lock directly to an unverified door-station terminal. A relay can be rated for signalling but not for powering the lock. For gates and shared entrances, have the installer confirm local electrical and fire-egress requirements.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Installation sequence that prevents expensive rework
- Measure and photograph the locations. Record wall width, viewing distance, door-station height, cable entry and nearby power outlets.
- Map the visitor’s path. Mark where a person stands, where packages are left and where side approaches enter the frame.
- Identify the cable and power source. Label each conductor and verify voltage with appropriate test equipment; do not rely on wire colour.
- Choose storage and network hardware. Install the specified microSD card, NVR, PoE switch or injector before closing walls.
- Bench-test the complete kit. Connect the door station, monitor, app, lock relay and recording path on a work surface. Confirm call audio in both directions and verify that a recording can be exported.
- Mount and weather-seal the outdoor station. Keep the lens clear of direct glare, provide a drip loop and seal the cable entry without blocking drainage.
- Configure users and notifications. Create only the accounts needed, use strong unique passwords and enable multi-factor authentication where offered.
- Test day, night and failure cases. Check a visitor at the centre and edges of the frame, infrared or other night illumination, internet loss, monitor power loss, card-full behaviour and lock operation.
Common buying mistakes and fixes
Buying by screen size alone
Symptom: the monitor fits the wall but faces are still hard to identify. Fix: compare camera resolution, lighting, mounting height and viewing distance; screen size cannot restore missing image detail.

Assuming old doorbell wiring is universal
Symptom: the unit powers intermittently, reboots or never rings. Fix: verify the exact AC/DC range, PoE class or two-wire bus requirement and measure voltage under load. Replace the transformer or cable only after the system’s documentation confirms what is needed.
Choosing cloud storage without checking retention
Symptom: an important clip has expired or cannot be downloaded without a subscription. Fix: confirm retention, export options, region and pricing before installation; add local or NVR recording when evidence must remain available.
Ignoring night and edge performance
Symptom: the daytime preview looks wide but the visitor is dark or distorted at night. Fix: test with porch lighting on and off, keep faces near the central portion of the frame and adjust the angle rather than relying only on a wider lens.

Buyer’s checklist
- Wall area and viewing distance measured for the complete monitor assembly.
- Camera coverage specified in horizontal, vertical and diagonal terms.
- At least 120 degrees considered where visitors approach from the side.
- Existing cable identified as two-wire, Cat5e-or-better Ethernet or doorbell conductors.
- Voltage, PoE standard, transformer and cable length verified.
- Outdoor weather rating, mounting surface and cable-entry route confirmed.
- Lock, gate or strike voltage and relay requirements checked separately.
- Maximum indoor-monitor count confirmed.
- Storage chosen: built-in memory, microSD, NVR, cloud or a combination.
- Maximum card size, overwrite behaviour, retention and export method documented.
- App, notification, account and internet-outage behaviour tested.
- Warranty, local service and installer support checked for the country where the system will be used.
Bottom line
Start with the installation, not the brand name: measure for a 7-inch-class monitor, design for at least a 120-degree view where the entrance demands it, match the door station to the cable and voltage already available, and select storage that meets your retention and privacy needs. A dedicated monitor is the simplest answer for dependable in-home answering and access control; a PoE or Wi-Fi app-first system is the stronger fit for remote alerts and network recording. The right choice is the one whose field of view, wiring, lock interface and recording path all work together at your door.
