Vicquant’s planned architecture is offline-first, but the deployed demo described by its author depends on an internet connection and routes model calls through OpenRouter. Victor says he tested local inference, yet the hosting tier he had available could not support it in production. The distinction matters: a system’s design and test results do not, by themselves, describe what a live deployment can do.
What the planned Vicquant architecture was designed to do
Victor’s DEV Community article describes Vicquant as an offline financial-advisor application built around local inference. The proposed setup uses two models through llama.cpp on the user’s device:
- Llama-3.1-8B-Instruct for deeper financial reasoning.
- Phi-3.5-mini as a faster option intended to use less RAM.
Victor’s stated rationale is that response speed and reasoning quality pull in different directions, so routing between models can serve different needs better than relying on a single model. The article does not provide a comparative evaluation showing how well either model performs for those roles.
What the author says he tested locally
Victor reports testing the local design on a target with 8GB of RAM and 4 vCPUs, at roughly 12–15 tokens per second. These are project-specific figures reported by the author, not independently verified benchmarks or universal hardware requirements. The article does not specify the computer, model quantization, settings, workload, or measurement method, so the result cannot be reliably reproduced or generalized from the information given.

That reported test target also does not establish that Vicquant’s live demo can run locally. A test environment and a production host are separate constraints.
Why the deployed demo used a different inference route
Victor says the PaaS hosting tier available to him could not meet the RAM and CPU needs of the 8B model, and that he had not purchased an available Pro plan. He therefore connected the deployed app to OpenRouter instead of running the models locally. In the configuration described in the article, model calls go through that service, the demo requires internet access, and offline mode is disabled.

The article does not name the hosting provider, the plan’s resource limits, or its costs. It also does not establish whether the deployment has since changed. Treat the description as a snapshot of what Victor said he could deploy, not as confirmation of the demo’s behavior today.

What the AI does—and what remains deterministic
Victor says the model does not calculate financial indicators, signals, or backtest results. Those figures are produced by deterministic Python code; the model’s role is to explain results that have already been calculated. This division keeps numerical outputs separate from generated explanatory language, but it does not establish that the underlying strategy is financially sound.

The article reports 147/147 tests passing across indicators, signal logic, and backtesting, and says signals must pass a two-year historical-data gate. Those are the author’s project-specific claims. The page gives no independent test report, run date, or methodology sufficient to assess how comprehensive the tests are or what the historical-data gate proves.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What the deployment gap tells builders
Vicquant’s example illustrates a practical distinction: an architecture can be implemented and tested locally while remaining unavailable in production on the hosting tier a developer can actually use. Planning for deployment means checking resource limits and connectivity requirements alongside model selection—not assuming that a working local setup will transfer unchanged to a hosted environment.

Victor says local inference remains in the codebase and that he expects to restore it if the hosting constraint is lifted. That is his stated intention, not confirmation that offline mode later returned. As he put it: “But I’d rather say that directly than let a live demo imply a capability it isn’t currently providing.”
