Use locking pliers (often called “vice grips”) when you need jaws that clamp and stay locked. Use adjustable water-pump or tongue-and-groove pliers when you need to change the opening repeatedly while gripping or turning pipes, nuts, sleeves, or irregular shapes. Neither tool is automatically “better”: the locking action, adjustment method, jaw profile, workpiece size, and risk of marking the surface determine the right choice.

The phrase adjustable pliers is ambiguous. It usually means water-pump/tongue-and-groove pliers, but some people use it for pliers wrenches or even adjustable wrenches. Identify the design before choosing a tool.

Quick comparison

Job requirement Best starting point Reason
Hold a part while both hands are needed elsewhere Locking pliers The jaws lock onto the workpiece and maintain clamping pressure.
Grip or turn pipes, nuts, sleeves, or mixed-size parts Water-pump/tongue-and-groove pliers The joint can be reset quickly for different openings.
Grip a flat, square, or hexagonal surface with a locking tool Straight-jaw locking pliers The straight jaws provide broad contact on those surfaces.
Grip round pipe or several surface shapes and keep the tool locked Curved-jaw locking pliers The curved profile is intended for round, square, and hex workpieces.
Turn a finished fastener without toothed jaws biting it Smooth-jaw pliers wrench or correctly sized wrench Use a tool designed for smooth, parallel contact rather than standard toothed pliers.

This is a selection guide, not a claim that one category is universally stronger or safer. Capacity and suitability vary by model, so match the tool to the actual pipe, nut, bolt, or part.

What “vice grips” actually means

Vice-Grip is a brand name; locking pliers is the tool category

“Vice-Grip” is IRWIN’s trademark. In everyday workshop language, vice grips commonly means locking pliers from any manufacturer. The defining feature is a mechanism that lets you set the jaw fit and gripping pressure, close the handles, and lock the jaws around the workpiece.

On a typical straight-jaw model, you turn an adjustment screw to set how far the jaws close and how much pressure they apply. After the fit is established, the setting can remain in place for repeated work. A release lever or release handle then unlocks the jaws. The adjustment is therefore a setup operation, not something you normally repeat for every squeeze.

Locking plier jaw profiles

  • Straight jaws: intended for maximum contact on flat, square, or hexagonal surfaces. IRWIN describes its Original Straight Jaw Locking Pliers 102L3 for those shapes.
  • Curved jaws: shaped to contact round pipe as well as square and hexagonal bolts and other varied profiles. The curved shape is useful when a flat jaw would touch only at corners.
  • Special-purpose profiles: other locking pliers may use long, wide, or specialty jaws. Treat the model’s stated application and capacity as the limit; do not assume that every locking plier has the same reach or grip.

What “adjustable pliers” can mean

Water-pump or tongue-and-groove pliers

The most common meaning is a pair of pliers with multiple joint positions. You move the pivot into a different groove or slot to change the jaw opening, then squeeze the handles to grip. This design is intended for frequent size changes, such as moving between different pipe diameters or nut sizes.

KNIPEX describes its Cobra water-pump pliers as having 25 adjustment positions, a self-locking grip on pipes and nuts, and jaws that can engage flat, round, and angled components. CHANNELLOCK’s SpeedGrip line uses a push-button adjustable tongue-and-groove design. These are manufacturer feature descriptions, not independent tests comparing brands.

Pliers wrenches

A pliers wrench is a separate category with smooth, generally parallel jaws. It is chosen when you need plier-like leverage but want broad, non-toothed contact on a finished fitting or fastener. Calling it simply “adjustable pliers” can lead to the wrong purchase, so verify that the product is explicitly a pliers wrench.

Adjustable wrenches

An adjustable wrench is also adjacent, not interchangeable. CHANNELLOCK identifies adjustable wrenches as tools for nuts and bolts and lists traditional, slim-jaw, wide-jaw, and reversible designs. An adjustable wrench grips the flats of a fastener; it does not use toothed plier jaws or a locking mechanism.

How the adjustment mechanisms differ

Locking pliers: set once, then clamp

  1. Open the jaws and place them around the workpiece.
  2. Turn the adjustment screw until the jaws nearly fit the part.
  3. Squeeze the handles until the locking mechanism engages.
  4. Check that the part is held without crushing or distorting it.
  5. Release the jaws with the release handle when the operation is complete.

The advantage is a sustained hold without continuously squeezing the handles. That makes locking pliers useful as a temporary clamp or as a third hand. The trade-off is that changing to a substantially different size requires resetting the screw, and excessive pressure can mark or deform a softer material.

Water-pump pliers: change position as the size changes

  1. Open the handles and select a pivot groove that places the jaws around the workpiece without being fully spread.
  2. Seat the jaws on the flats, corners, or curved surface you intend to grip.
  3. Squeeze the handles while keeping the tool aligned with the workpiece.
  4. Release, move to another groove, and reposition whenever the size changes.

The rapid multi-position adjustment is efficient for a series of different sizes. These pliers do not provide the same locked, hands-free hold as locking pliers; you normally maintain force through the handles while turning or holding.

Choose by the job, not by the name

Holding a part for drilling, cutting, or assembly

Start with locking pliers when the workpiece must stay in one place while you use both hands for another operation. Set the jaws so they hold firmly but do not crush tubing, thin sheet, soft wood, or finished surfaces. For a flat bar, square stock, or hex head, straight jaws generally give the intended broad contact. For round stock or pipe, a curved jaw is the more appropriate locking profile.

Turning pipe, fittings, or irregular shapes

Start with water-pump/tongue-and-groove pliers when you will change opening sizes or need to grip a mix of round, flat, and angled shapes. Their toothed jaws can bite into a pipe or fitting, which helps prevent slipping but can leave marks. Protect a finished surface with an appropriate covering or use a smooth-jaw tool when appearance matters.

Working on nuts and bolts

For a regular hex fastener, use a correctly sized fixed or adjustable wrench whenever possible. If you need an adjustable tool with smooth, parallel jaws, identify a pliers wrench specifically. Locking pliers or toothed tongue-and-groove pliers are fallback gripping tools, not a promise of undamaged flats; choose them only when marking is acceptable and the workpiece can tolerate the force.

Clamping a round pipe temporarily

Curved-jaw locking pliers are the better starting point when the pipe must remain clamped without hand pressure. Set the jaws on a structurally sound section, avoid crushing thin-wall tubing, and verify that the locked tool cannot rotate into a hazard. If you need to reposition repeatedly along a run of pipe, water-pump pliers are faster because the opening is changed at the joint rather than by readjusting a screw.

Gripping a flat, square, or hex part

Straight-jaw locking pliers are designed for broad contact on these surfaces. Align both jaws so the load is distributed rather than concentrated on one corner. A water-pump plier can also grip such shapes, but its teeth and open-jaw geometry may leave deeper marks and may require continued hand pressure.

Jaw contact, capacity, and surface damage

Capacity is model-specific. A tool that fits one pipe or nut is not automatically suitable for the next size. Check the manufacturer’s maximum opening, pipe capacity, and intended jaw profile, then compare those figures with the actual workpiece. Do not infer capacity from handle length or from the tool category name.

Toothed jaws are useful because they resist sliding on rough or round material. The same teeth can damage plated fasteners, polished fittings, painted parts, and soft metals. Locking pressure adds another source of damage: a tool can leave a dent even when it does not slip. Use a sacrificial layer only if it does not make the grip unstable, and test the setup on an inconspicuous area when the finish matters.

Smooth-jaw pliers wrenches and conventional wrenches spread contact across flats without teeth. They are preferable for finished fittings, but they still require correct sizing and alignment. A smooth jaw is not permission to apply unlimited force or to use a tool beyond its stated capacity.

Specific examples and published specifications

Example Published feature How to interpret it
IRWIN VISE-GRIP Original Straight Jaw Locking Pliers 102L3 Adjustment screw sets pressure and fit; straight jaws are described for flat, square, or hex work. Use as an example of a straight-jaw locking design. The description does not establish a universal strength rating for all locking pliers.
IRWIN curved-jaw locking pliers Curved jaws are described for round pipe, square surfaces, and hex bolts. Choose the curved profile when the workpiece is round or has varied contours.
KNIPEX Cobra 87 01 250 25 adjustment positions; maximum 46 mm nut opening and 50 mm pipe capacity for this model. Those figures apply to this particular Cobra model, not to adjustable pliers generally.
CHANNELLOCK SpeedGrip Push-button adjustable tongue-and-groove design. Useful when quick, repeated jaw-position changes are more important than a locking hold.

These specifications come from the manufacturers’ product material. No independent head-to-head performance study was identified, so the figures should not be presented as comparative laboratory results.

Step-by-step selection workflow

  1. Describe the task in one sentence. Is the tool holding a part, turning a pipe, gripping a nut, or moving between many sizes?
  2. Decide whether the jaws must stay closed without your hand. If yes, begin with locking pliers. If no, continue to an adjustable jaw design.
  3. Identify the workpiece shape. Flat, square, and hex surfaces favor straight jaws; round pipe favors curved jaws or water-pump pliers.
  4. Measure the largest opening needed. Compare it with the exact model’s published capacity, not a generic category estimate.
  5. Assess the finish. If teeth or clamping pressure could mark the part, choose a smooth-jaw wrench or pliers wrench when its capacity fits.
  6. Plan for repositioning. Repeated size changes favor tongue-and-groove adjustment; one stable setup favors a locking mechanism.
  7. Test the grip at low force. Confirm that the jaws seat squarely and do not slip, twist, or crush the workpiece before applying more torque.

Safe use and common failure modes

The tool slips

Release it and inspect jaw alignment, size setting, and the workpiece surface. Teeth that are loaded on a corner or only one edge can slip even when the handles feel tight. Reset the opening so both jaws contact solid material, then try again with controlled force.

The workpiece is crushed or deeply marked

Reduce locking pressure, move to a stronger section, or switch to a tool with a broader or smooth jaw. Thin-wall tubing and soft materials need support; a locking tool should hold them, not distort them.

The locking pliers will not release

Keep the tool pointed away from people, reduce the load if possible, and operate the release lever deliberately. Do not strike the handles or force the mechanism against a loaded workpiece. If the mechanism remains stuck, stop and remove the tool only after the part is safely supported.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The adjustment is wrong for the next part

Do not force a locking plier onto a larger workpiece by over-tightening the screw. Open it, reset the screw for the new fit, and engage the lock normally. With tongue-and-groove pliers, release the grip before moving the pivot to another groove.

The fastener flats are rounding

Stop using toothed pliers and select a correctly sized wrench or smooth-jaw pliers wrench. Keep the tool square to the fastener and apply force in the direction that keeps the jaws seated.

A practical decision checklist

  • Choose locking pliers when the primary requirement is a hands-free clamp or a repeatable locked hold.
  • Choose straight jaws for broad contact on flat, square, or hexagonal work.
  • Choose curved jaws when a locking tool must engage round pipe or mixed contours.
  • Choose water-pump/tongue-and-groove pliers when the opening must change often for pipes, nuts, and varied shapes.
  • Choose a pliers wrench or adjustable wrench when smooth contact on finished nuts or fittings is more important than toothed grip.
  • Verify the exact model’s opening and pipe capacity before purchase or use.
  • Assume that toothed jaws and high locking pressure can mark a surface unless the material and finish clearly tolerate them.

Bottom line

Vice grips and adjustable pliers solve different problems. Locking pliers are the choice for clamping and holding; adjustable water-pump or tongue-and-groove pliers are the choice for rapidly changing jaw openings while gripping pipes, nuts, and irregular shapes. Choose the jaw profile and capacity for the workpiece, and switch to a smooth-jaw wrench when protecting a finished fastener or fitting matters.
