The right Vice-Grip-style locking pliers are determined by the workpiece’s measured size and shape, the access and reach you need, and the jaw style—not by overall length alone. Treat 5-, 7-, or 10-inch labels as nominal tool lengths, then verify the exact model’s jaw opening or capacity before buying. A 10-inch curved-jaw pair is a useful general example, while a set such as 5CR/7CR/10CR makes sense when your jobs vary.

What the size number on locking pliers means

“Vice Grip” is commonly used for locking pliers. The number in a model description usually refers to the tool’s nominal overall length, such as 5, 7, or 10 inches. It is not a universal statement of the largest pipe, nut, plate, or other object the jaws can hold.

That distinction matters because two tools with similar overall lengths can have different jaw shapes, throat depths, adjustment ranges, and release mechanisms. The official product pages and catalogs for the examples below identify lengths and model codes, but they do not publish one complete size-to-jaw-opening chart. Do not infer a maximum diameter from the handle length. Match the measured workpiece to the capacity listed for the specific model you are considering.

Why overall length is still useful

Length gives you a rough handling and access clue. A compact pair may be easier to position in a confined area; a longer pair can provide a larger frame or more reach. Those are practical selection considerations, not a published performance ranking. If the jaws cannot approach the workpiece squarely, a longer tool will not solve the access problem. If the opening is insufficient, a shorter tool will not become adequate simply because you can reach the work.

What the model code adds

Manufacturers use codes to distinguish jaw forms and product families. For example, IRWIN lists 5CR, 7CR, and 10CR in a three-piece set, while its seven-piece kit combines CR, LN, R, LW, and LC models. The letters are meaningful only when read with the manufacturer’s model description; do not assume that a code from one product family has the same interpretation in every catalog.

A practical method for choosing a size

  1. Measure the workpiece. Record the outside dimension or the thickness across the area that the jaws must cover. Measure irregular sections at the point where the tool will actually sit, not at a more convenient part of the object.
  2. Describe the task. Decide whether the pliers must hold, clamp, twist, turn, or stabilize the part. The force direction and contact area often matter more than the tool’s nominal length.
  3. Check the approach. Look at the space around the workpiece. Note obstructions, the angle from which the jaws can enter, and whether a longer nose or a broader jaw would interfere with nearby parts.
  4. Select a jaw geometry. Curved, straight, long-nose, and clamp-style tools are separate choices. Select the form that gives the required contact and reach before choosing among lengths.
  5. Verify model-specific capacity. Read the manufacturer’s specification for jaw opening or capacity for that exact model. If the listing does not state the value, contact the manufacturer or choose a listing that does; never substitute a guess based on the tool’s length.
  6. Choose the release style. Classic locking pliers use a conventional release arrangement. Fast Release models add a triggerless, one-handed release feature according to the manufacturer, which can be useful when the other hand is occupied.
  7. Decide between one tool and an assortment. For one recurring task, buy the jaw style and capacity that match it. For mixed work, compare the actual models in a set rather than judging it by the number of pieces alone.

Jaw styles: choose contact and reach before length

Curved jaws

Curved jaws are a versatile starting point when the workpiece has a rounded, uneven, or changing profile. IRWIN describes its 10-inch Original curved-jaw model as suitable for a wide variety of material shapes, with hardened teeth designed to grip from any angle. Milwaukee’s hand-tool catalog says curved jaws maximize pressure points. These statements describe the manufacturers’ intended design; they do not establish a universal capacity for every curved-jaw model.

On IRWIN model 502L3, an adjustment screw changes the clamping pressure and the tool includes a built-in wire cutter. See the manufacturer’s listing for the exact configuration: IRWIN Original Curved Jaw Locking Pliers with Wire Cutter.

Long-nose jaws

Long-nose locking pliers are intended for long-reach applications in Milwaukee’s catalog. Choose this geometry when the gripping point is recessed, narrow, or partly hidden and a standard curved jaw cannot reach it. A long nose may contact a smaller area, so verify that the jaws can surround the workpiece and that the specified capacity covers its measured dimension.

Straight jaws

Straight-jaw models present a different contact shape from curved jaws. They can be preferable when the surfaces to be clamped are relatively flat or when you need a more direct face-to-face grip. The reviewed catalogs list straight-jaw tools as their own product type but do not provide a single rule that assigns every material or diameter to them. Use the workpiece profile and the model’s capacity specification as the deciding evidence.

Clamp and large-jaw forms

Clamp-style and large-jaw forms are also distinct catalog categories. Their broader or differently shaped jaws can help when a standard plier profile cannot span the part or when you need a particular throat shape. Compare throat depth, opening, and access in the model drawing or specification rather than relying on the label “large.”

How to think about 5-, 7-, 10-, and 12-inch options

Nominal length is best treated as a handling constraint. A smaller frame may fit into a tight compartment, while a larger frame may be easier to operate around a bigger or more distant workpiece. Neither statement tells you the actual jaw opening. The same nominal length can also be offered with different jaw geometries, so a 7-inch long-nose tool is not interchangeable with a 7-inch curved-jaw tool.

  • 5-inch class: Useful to investigate when the work is compact and access is restricted. Confirm that the model’s opening covers the measured part.
  • 7-inch class: A middle-size option found in several sets and jaw families. Choose by geometry and capacity, not because seven inches is automatically a general-purpose size.
  • 10-inch class: A common example for general curved-jaw locking pliers. IRWIN’s 502L3 is 10 inches and includes a wire cutter, but that does not make every 10-inch model suitable for the same work.
  • 12-inch class: Larger forms appear in assortment kits, such as the 12LC in IRWIN’s seven-piece set. Check the exact large-jaw configuration and its stated capacity before assuming it will span a particular object.

One pair or a set?

When one pair is enough

Choose a single tool when one job dominates your use: for example, a specific curved-jaw model for a repeatedly measured workpiece, or a long-nose model for a particular recessed location. A single purchase lets you concentrate on the exact jaw form, capacity, and access requirements instead of accepting tools you may never use.

When a three-piece range helps

The 4935580 set contains 5CR, 7CR, and 10CR models. That range covers three nominal lengths in one Original family. It can be a logical comparison point for a workshop that handles varied dimensions but generally uses the same curved-jaw style. Confirm the capacity of each included model; the set name alone does not provide a jaw-opening chart.

When a broader seven-piece assortment is justified

The 757KB kit lists seven different models: 5CR, 6LN, 7R, 7LW, 10CR, 10LW, and 12LC. Its value is the mixture of jaw forms and sizes, not simply the piece count. Before buying, identify which included model addresses your access problem and whether the remaining tools justify the assortment for your work.

When release mechanism matters

The IRHT82590 Fast Release set contains 7WR and 10WR. IRWIN describes a one-handed, triggerless release. This is a separate buying axis from length: a tool can have the right opening yet still be inconvenient if its release method does not suit your workflow. Read the model description to confirm that the feature is present on the exact pair you are considering.

How to compare two locking-plier models

Comparison point Question to answer Evidence you should require
Jaw opening or capacity Will the jaws surround the measured workpiece with usable contact? The exact model’s specification, drawing, or manufacturer confirmation. Do not infer it from length.
Jaw geometry Is the contact curved, straight, long-nose, or clamp-style? Product description and clear photographs or diagrams from the manufacturer.
Reach and access Can the jaws approach the gripping point without striking nearby parts? Model dimensions and the actual clearance at your job site.
Adjustment Can you set the clamping pressure for the material and task? The model’s adjustment-screw or pressure-control description.
Release How will you open the tool after clamping? Confirmation of conventional or Fast Release operation on that model.
Assortment contents Do the included tools add distinct capacities or jaw forms? A complete model-by-model contents list, not only a piece count.

How to verify capacity when a listing is vague

  1. Find the complete model identifier. “10-inch locking pliers” is not enough. Record the suffix and family designation, such as 10CR, 10WR, or 10LW.
  2. Open the manufacturer’s product page. Look for jaw opening, clamping range, throat depth, or a dimensional drawing. The official IRWIN pliers catalog and product pages are starting points: IRWIN pliers catalog.
  3. Check the unit and conditions. Confirm whether a dimension is stated in inches or millimeters and whether it describes opening, throat depth, or another measurement. Do not treat different measurements as interchangeable.
  4. Compare the specification with your measurement. Allow enough contact for the intended grip and account for the angle at which the jaws must enter.
  5. Ask before purchasing if the value is absent. A manufacturer or qualified seller can confirm the model-specific capacity. If no reliable value is available, select a model with a published specification rather than guessing.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

Buying by length alone

Problem: Selecting a 10-inch pair because the workpiece “looks large.”
Correction: Measure the gripping point and verify the exact model’s opening. The 10-inch label is only one clue.

Assuming every 7-inch tool is interchangeable

Problem: Treating a 7-inch curved jaw, straight jaw, and long nose as equivalent.
Correction: Compare geometry and reach first. A long-nose model may reach a recess that a curved jaw cannot, while a curved jaw may provide better contact on an irregular profile.

Ignoring access around the part

Problem: Choosing a tool that technically opens wide enough but cannot be positioned without hitting surrounding components.
Correction: Check the approach angle and clearance before ordering. Consider a different jaw form or a smaller frame if the required capacity remains available.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Confusing a set’s piece count with coverage

Problem: Assuming a seven-piece kit is automatically better than a three-piece set.
Correction: Read every included model. The seven-piece example adds long-nose and other forms, while the three-piece example concentrates on 5CR, 7CR, and 10CR sizes. Buy the assortment that covers your actual tasks.

Assuming a feature applies to every model

Problem: Expecting one-handed triggerless release because another pair in the same brand has it.
Correction: Confirm the release mechanism in the exact product description. Fast Release is a distinct product feature, not a consequence of nominal size.

A concise decision guide

  • One irregular or rounded workpiece: Start with a curved jaw, then verify the model capacity and access.
  • A recessed gripping point: Investigate a long-nose model and confirm that its opening suits the measured section.
  • Mostly flat opposing surfaces: Compare straight-jaw or clamp-style forms, using the manufacturer’s dimensions rather than a generic size rule.
  • Several unrelated jobs: Compare a 5CR/7CR/10CR range with a broader assortment whose listed models add different jaw geometries.
  • Frequent one-handed operation: Compare a Fast Release pair such as the 7WR/10WR set, while still checking capacity and access.
  • Unclear listing: Do not purchase on the nominal length alone; obtain the model-specific opening or choose a listing that states it.

What the available specifications do—and do not—establish

The manufacturer material establishes examples of nominal lengths, model codes, jaw categories, adjustment features, set contents, and the Fast Release description. It does not provide a comprehensive comparison chart that maps every length to a maximum jaw opening. It also does not establish independent performance tests, universal suitability for a particular pipe or nut diameter, current pricing, retailer availability, or user-tested rankings.

That limitation does not prevent a sound purchase. It changes the order of decisions: measure the workpiece, choose the jaw geometry and reach, verify the exact model capacity, and only then use nominal length to refine handling and access.
