Vibe coding tools can turn a plain-language description into an app prototype, but they vary widely in how much they build and how much control you retain. This shortlist covers 19 tools described in a May 1, 2026 CIO feature—from visual app builders to coding agents—and explains how to choose a tool for your skill level, project, and tolerance for reviewing code.
What vibe coding tools do—and what they do not
Vibe coding usually means describing an intended result in natural language and accepting the AI-generated code without examining it closely. When you inspect and understand the code, the work is better described as reviewed AI-assisted development. That distinction matters: generating a prototype can be approachable even when maintaining a secure, reliable application still requires technical review.
These tools can help people move from an idea to a working initial version without writing every line themselves. They do not make every generated app production-ready, and the CIO feature notes that some tools may fit prototypes or smaller user groups better than applications that need to scale. A user who does not inspect the output may miss how it handles authentication, input validation, secrets, data, or future changes. That is a risk to assess, not proof that every generated app is insecure or unmaintainable.

Which of the 19 tools might fit your project?
The list spans prompt-driven app builders, visual no-code/low-code systems, AI-enabled editors, repository and terminal agents, and automation tools. The categories overlap: a platform may generate an app while also exposing a visual editor or code workflow.
Prompt-driven app creation and visual building
| Tool | What the CIO feature describes | Potential fit |
|---|---|---|
| Base44/Wix | Builder Chat focused on data architecture, a React/Tailwind front end, a Deno backend, templates, and a drag-and-drop visual editor. The feature says Base44 is owned by Wix. | People who want a prompt-led start with visual editing options. |

AI editors and coding agents
| Tool | What the CIO feature describes | Potential fit |
|---|---|---|
| Claude Code | Anthropic’s coding tool, described as useful for creating or repairing applications through a terminal or IDE-connected workflow. | People working on application creation or repair in a coding workflow. |
| Continue | An open-source agent aimed at developers, with IDE and AI API integrations and automation of recurring development tasks. | Developers who want agent support integrated into an IDE or recurring tasks. |
| Cursor | An AI-native editor that can work across files and a codebase, propose a plan, and make changes. The feature notes it remains a traditional development environment. | Developers comfortable working in an editor and an existing codebase. |
| Kilo Code | An open-source coding agent described as offering planning, code review, project memory, and access to multiple models. | Developers evaluating an agent-oriented workflow for code changes. |
| Windsurf | An AI-enabled IDE for multi-step work in codebases; its “cascades” are described as sequential plans and suggestions that users approve. | Developers who want to review proposed steps while working through a codebase. |
Automation agents
| Tool | What the CIO feature describes | Potential fit |
|---|---|---|
| Lindy | A tool for building background agents that respond to triggers from connected services; the feature names support agents as one use case. | People automating triggered tasks across connected services rather than building a conventional app. |
These fit descriptions come from the CIO feature, not a common benchmark. Treat them as starting points for product evaluation, and check vendors’ current documentation before relying on a specific capability, integration, or deployment option.

How to choose a tool for your skill level and app
Start with the work you need done, not a claim that one product is best for everyone. A novice making a prototype has different needs from a developer changing a large repository or an enterprise team evaluating operational controls.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Define the deliverable. Decide whether you need a clickable prototype, a deployable web app, a code change in an existing project, or an automated task triggered by another service. A background-agent tool and a full-stack app builder solve different problems.
- Match the workflow to your experience. If you do not want to work directly in code, investigate prompt-driven or visual builders. If you already work in a repository, an editor or coding agent may be a more natural fit. Enterprise teams should assess their own deployment and security requirements rather than relying on a product label.
- Check code access and control. Find out whether the tool exposes editable code, a repository, or an export path, and whether you can maintain the result without the original generation workflow. Do not assume a tool offers a particular export or ownership option unless its current documentation confirms it.
- Map app components and dependencies. Identify what the tool generates and what services it relies on: front end, backend, database, hosting, APIs, and integrations. Confirm where data is stored and what the app requires to operate.
- Understand usage and cost before iterating. Some app builders use credits or tokens, and repeated prompts or revisions can consume usage. Review current pricing and limits directly with the vendor; figures in an August 2026 vendor guide are historical, not a current price list.
- Plan for review and maintenance. Decide who will test functionality, inspect code, secure credentials and user data, and handle updates. If no one can do that, limit the prototype’s scope and avoid relying on it for sensitive information or important operations.
A separate August 2026 guide groups the market into app builders, AI editors, terminal agents, and multi-agent orchestration products. That is one useful orientation, not a formal classification used by the CIO feature. The practical distinction is how much the tool builds for you and how much technical control and review you need to supply.

What to verify before trusting a generated app
- Authentication and permissions: Check who can sign in, what each user can access, and whether access rules work as intended.
- Input handling: Test invalid, unexpected, and potentially harmful input, not only the examples used to generate the app.
- Secrets and data: Confirm credentials are not exposed in client-side code and understand where personal or sensitive data is stored and sent.
- Dependencies and integrations: Identify external services, databases, APIs, and their operating requirements; verify current vendor documentation for details.
- Failure and recovery: Test error states, backups, and what happens when a connected service or deployment fails.
- Maintainability: Ensure a capable person can understand, update, and support the app after the initial prompt-based build.
AI assistance can reduce the effort needed to create an initial version; it does not remove responsibility for the software that version becomes. Have a qualified person review and test an app before real users, sensitive data, or important workflows depend on it.
