No. A conventional VGA splitter duplicates one video signal, so both connected screens show the same image; it cannot create an extended desktop with independent content on each screen. A splitter can be useful when you want to mirror a display. To extend a desktop, the computer needs separate supported display outputs or a compatible display adapter that adds one.
What “extend desktop” means
Windows distinguishes between two multi-display modes. Duplicate shows the same desktop on multiple screens. Extend spreads the desktop across displays, allowing you to move windows and other items between them. Windows also provides controls to detect and arrange connected displays. Microsoft’s guide to using multiple monitors explains these modes.
A VGA splitter distributes the computer’s single video signal to more than one output. It does not give the computer a second independent signal to send, so choosing Extend in Windows cannot make a conventional splitter produce different images on its screens.
When a VGA splitter is the right choice
Use a splitter when both screens should show the same image—for example, to display one presentation on two screens. SIIG’s 1×2 Compact VGA Splitter is specified for one VGA input and two VGA outputs, with USB power and mirror display mode. SIIG’s product specifications describe that device; features may differ among splitter models.
#1 Best Overall
- VGA Dual Monitor Adapter: This VGA splitter cable duplicates a single VGA signal to two VGA displays, sending the same image to both monitors (VGA cables sold separately). Note: This VGA splitter only mirrors the display and does not support extended or independent screens.
- Easy to Use: The duplicator VGA splitter dual monitor has a male VGA connector that plugs directly into a computer and two female VGA sockets that connect to the VGA cables for two separate displays.
- High-Resolution Support: This VGA splitter supports video resolutions up to 1920x1200, 1920x1080, 1600x1200 (UXGA), 1024x768 (XGA), and 800x600 (SVGA) for clear images on LCD and LED monitors. Audio must be transmitted separately.
- Durable & Reliable: The sturdy construction of this monitor splitter adapter supports the weight of two VGA cords. Designed for frequent use, it offers long-lasting performance.
- Universal Compatibility: Works with any computer or display that uses a VGA connection. Also known as RGB, DB-15, DE-15, HD-15, HDB-15, or D-sub 15 for broad compatibility with computers and monitors.
What to use for an extended desktop
For independent content, the computer must support multiple independent displays. You can use a second supported video output already on the computer, or add an output through a compatible display adapter or docking station. Microsoft notes that a computer’s graphics adapter may limit how many monitors it can drive and identifies a dock or USB adapter as possible ways to add an output. Check Microsoft’s multiple-monitor guidance for the applicable Windows settings and advice.
Some USB-to-VGA adapters support either mirroring or extending, but support depends on the specific adapter and host configuration. StarTech documents USB-to-VGA adapters with these modes; consult the model’s specifications for operating-system, port, and resolution requirements rather than assuming they apply to every adapter. See StarTech’s USB-to-VGA adapter details.

Check compatibility before choosing a setup
- Display mode: Decide whether you need the same image on both screens or separate desktop areas.
- Independent-display limit: Confirm how many independent displays the computer’s graphics adapter supports. Microsoft recommends checking with the graphics adapter manufacturer.
- Adapter and connection: Verify that the adapter works with the computer’s operating system and available USB port, and that its output matches the monitor’s input. If the monitor lacks VGA, the connection may require a different adapter or cable.
- Resolution: Check the adapter’s supported resolution and ensure it suits the display you plan to use.
Intel’s legacy graphics documentation describes extended desktop as a graphics-adapter capability involving at least two display pipes. That explanation is specific to the product generations it covers, so it should not be used to infer compatibility for a current PC; verify the current computer’s specifications instead.
